Illamasqua Freak Eau de Parfum Review

Getting my freak on today courtesy Illamasqua Freak Eau de Parfum ($90).

As Illamasqua is known for their bold take on makeup, I expected no less from their fragrance. Honestly, if anything at all, Freak Eau de Parfume sounded positively enchanting and dare I say scary thanks to notes like Frankincense and Myrrh (a little gold and we can relive the birth of Christ).

I expected dark, dank, and overpowering but what I got was a terribly interesting experience to say the least.

Illamasqua obviously took great care and attention when creating Freak. This isn’t some quick, flash in the pan fragrance they decided to create.

Freak is a unisex fragrance with exotic completely unconventional flower notes. It’ll smell differently on everyone but the master notes will remain the same.

Housed in a tilted, black glass art deco bottle it features a delicate silver snail crawling up the side. It’s a charming bottle and has elements that appeal to my inner gothy good nature.

The scent scared me to say the least but I was terribly surprised upon trying it. It’s most definitely a floral blend but a soft, delicate, very feminine one. I’m not sure what I expected, something incense-y with a ton of overpowering notes. But it’s actually very gentle and has a lot less bite than one would expect from something that contains such rich, exotic notes.

It contains an orange bloom base which supposedly enhances the wearer’s own natural fragrance. I tried it with my sister in store and again with several friends. Each person that used it with me had a different fragrance experience.

It contains Queen of the Night Blossom which is a rare flower that blooms for a single night each year. Having never smelled Queen of Night before I’m slowly understood the complexity of the note. This is the dominate note that showcases the entire fragrance. It’s floral with a slight sweetness that’s both warm and cool. The scent can only be described as sultry and very provocative.

At first sniff Frankincense and Myrrh are something my nose picks up right away. This is disappointing as I dislike both notes. If you wait a few moments and allow the fragrance to slowly dry down other notes start to come forth that overpower both the Frankincense and Myrrh. Belladonna, Black Davana, and Datura play gently on the dry down.

The fragrance is very unique, complex, and quite interesting to say the least. Being a collector of a variety of unusual fragrances I must say this is a prize in my stash. It even rivals some of my favorite Annick Goutal fragrances.

Overall, with a name like Freak I was expecting something dark but what I got was a mysteriously exotic fragrance that’s very unique and innovative. Obviously a lot of time and love went into the make up of this fragrance and it shows. I felt like the wear time was a little short for me but the scent has a enough linger during the wear that people will lean in close and ask, “What are you wearing?”

And after all isn’t that what we want from our fragrance? Something that wows and evokes curiosity yes?

Love this.

Muse Approved for purchase.

The wear time was short but it doesn’t sway me from absolutely loving this unique scent.

The bottle! The SNAIL! Too neat! I just wish it wasn’t so pricey. I’m not a big perfume gal so that’s a lot for me to invest. But the snail…..he’s so cute!

  • Odelia

Thanks for reviewing this perfume! I have been so curious about it for a while now. So tempting!

    • the Muse

my pleasure! I LOVE it Odelia ;-D do sniff it when you’re at sephora ;-D it’s really NOT as dark as the name proclaims it to be ;D! nothing freaky here, just gorgeousness! when I originally purchased it I thought I’d regret it, as sometimes something smells good in store but you get it home and hate it, but I’m so glad I brought it now!

I ordered a very large amount from illamasqua, and got this as sample. I have to agree muse I was expecting something dark too, but in a way I should have known with a name like freak it was going to be different.

Strangely enough I really love this perfume (its too expensive for me right now, but I will get it) Thanks for taking close up pics of the snail, LOL I always thought it was a blob of silver in the pictures I saw!!

I am so glad to hear I’m not alone with this, I think it’s gorgeous ;-D I expected something like Kim K’s perfume, that’s some overwhelming perfume right there…but this is just so delicate and soft ;-D

      hehe yeah, he’s a little snail ;-D

Muse, thank you so much for your wonderful descriptions in your reviews — I don’t know a lot about perfume so this really helps. I’m looking for something new for this winter. No idea if this would work for me… But it’s sooo pretty! The name and the bottle do Freak me out! Hopefully, Sephora will have some samples or a tester in store.

my pleasure cookie! I’m so happy ot helped! Try it out, spritz it about three times and walk around the mall or sephora to try it out…the scent needs a second to settle before the true beauty emerges ;-D I hope you like it as much as me ;-D

I got a sample of this a month ago when I ordered some stuff from Illamasqua’s website. I spritzed a little bit of this on my wrists, then went to talk to my mother. She’s not big on perfume these days, but she really liked it. I like it as well, but I’m not sure I can justify spending $90 for it. If they came out with a smaller size, like a 1oz bottle, I’d at least consider it.

    • the Muse

I agree, price tag is a little hurtful lol ;-D but def could love on a smaller size or perhaps a gift set with a few extras to tempt me further ;D!

My gothy nature is very high, this would be a wonderful thing for me , seeing the bottle and the name. But still pricey.
hope I can have the opportunity to smell it at least on a sample

  • Quinctia

The bottle’s great. I can’t wear most perfumes like this, but I love the bottle!

$90? Ouch! But it sounds so amazing! And that damn snail is just too cute!

  • Harshleen@BeautyTidbits

You got me really interested in this perfume Muse! With a name like freak, I would never even have considered it.

  • Keya Millionie

I have been wanting to try this scent ever since FEARnet posted about it. Sadly it’s too far out of my price range but it does sound interesting.

    • the Muse

hey keya perhaps you can wait for Sephora FF and haul it a little cheaper than 🙂

  • Majick

I almost ordered this at the last F&F but I’m so funny about fragrance that I didn’t because of the price. I LOVE the bottle – I’m also fond of frank & myrrh – I’m particularly fond of dark scents and thought this might be kind of incensey.

Maybe this year… I would love to try it.

the Stila event got me in trouble at Ulta and I got a free fragrance with points – I was giong to get GAGA but it turned really fruity on me and kind of smelled like a stale bar? weird… so I ended up getting the new Lancome fragrance. I’m not big on Lancome fragrances so I was really surprized this one smelled so nice on me.

I usually wear Orientals and soem Florals – for some reason the headier fragrances that become cloying on some dry down to almost a powder on me. You can’t really smell them until you hug me or something.
