Givenchy Eclat Matissime Fluid Foundation Airy-Light Mat Radiance Review, Swatches, Photos

Givenchy Eclat Matissime ($51) is a matte liquid foundation product that the brand launched for Fall 2012. Odd choice as I commonly associate matte foundation launches with Summer. I’m sorry I sometimes forget to acknowledge you lucky folks out there with oily skin year round. Yes, lucky…! Oily skin types actually age slower than those with drier skin so be thankful 🙂

This fluid foundation can be liken to some of my personal favorites in terms of formula such as Shiseido Perfect Refining Foundation, Estee Lauder Invisible Fluid Makeup, and Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua.

Although I have dry skin I was still curious to try this out and I’m very happy I did indulge because it’s quite wonderful.

At $51 for a single oz this is a pricey foundation option but if you’re seeing flawless, refined skin it might not be too much to indulge in. I do liken it to many of the formulas I mentioned above as it’s a liquid water base which has suspended foundation pigments in the mix. In order to get the best use out of it does need to be shaken up a few times so both the liquid and pigments blend well together.

Matte finishes are tricky for me. I’m a bit oily in the Summer but for the most part I consider myself dry particularly in the winter. This is like no matte foundation I’ve tried before. It doesn’t have a velvety or powdery dry down so it doesn’t accentuate flaky or dry areas for me. It also has second-skin like technology that melds with skin creating natural yet long lasting results (P.S. there’s even an SPF 20 in the mix! Not a ton of protection but some is better than none).

If you’ve tried Urban Decay Deslick in a Tube I feel like this reminds me of that formula. Somehow it mattifies skin in a way that feels very natural and unobtrusive. It’s not the type of foundation that will sit unnaturally on your skin. Givenchy formulated it with silica beads which absorb excess oil and moisture but still allows skin to breath through the wear.

Some matifying foundations I’ve tried do too good a job with their matte finish and make my skin look very dry and flaky. The ends up accenting dry spots in a way that’s very unflattering. Granted, this isn’t a foundation I should really shop for with my skin type but I’m glad I did because it works beautifully regardless of my dryness.

I’ve used it through a few cooler days and I’ve used it through some fairly hot ones we’ve had as well and it performs beautifully all around. Wear is solid with no issues of oxidation. The foundation looks as fresh as it does in five hours as it does in the first hour of application. On a warmer day it keeps shine at bay and on a cooler morning when my face might feel tighter or dryer, it still manages to look flawless and natural.

Mat Beige (Beige was the shade that fit me best although it was a little dark) and Mat Sand

Speaking of natural…

That’s also another reason to love it. I keep doing these reviews where I mention foundations that wear like second skin. It seems the newest rage for foundation lately though. This is one of those foundation. Although it offers sheer to medium coverage it still manages to enhance my own natural skin tone and creates weightless coverage that barely looks like I have any makeup on at all. Isn’t that exactly what we want from our foundation products?

Unfortunately, I will rant that I dislike the packaging. It comes in a square bottle like many of these types of foundations do however it lacks the squirt top and has a depressor for dispensing product. Unfortunately it squirts out a little too much for my liking so this is a little faulty.

Givenchy Eclat Matissime Fluid Foundation Airy-Light Mat Radiance is an excellent product for all skin types. Dry and combo types will love how natural it wears where as oily ones will be very pleased with the light, breathable coverage it provides that soaks up excess oil. This, my friends, is a keeper.

Muse Approved for purchase.

An excellent foundation. Pricey but flawlessness is worth it.

Available at Sephora.

I purchased this item.

Ooh, I love the Shiseido Perfect Refining Foundation so I’m super-intrigued by this. But that price! I know it’s Givenchy but bleh…

I hate it when the dispensers on foundations (or makeup in general) are crap; you know the company probably designed it that way so that we run out of product faster and then have to buy more >__< Otherwise this sounds like a beautiful foundation!! My normal foundation has been feeling a little heavy these days (though it's probably just from the heat)…

I tried this at Sephora and was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked the formula. It’s matte, but not drying. Like you, I think the packaging is cumbersome and don’t like it very much. Next time I’m at Sephora I’ll try it again because I’m still not sure if I need yet another foundation and decide if it’s really worth $51.

I just bought this too! I loved it so much but I am just so oily that blotting sheets are still needed. But I love how it looks so much that I definitely don’t mind!

Have you tried the UD & Benefit foundations? I’d love to know how those are in comparison. I am totally all over the natural finish foundations but holy hell my skin is so oily. I am considering this after more research…eeeep dat price tho. DAT. PRICE. :[

I’m in the “oily all year long” camp! Seems like a bummer but I do know my skin will age better!

Aww I’m glad you liked this one! This and naked skin are my new fan foundations. I actually like matte finish foundations, even tho I’m not oily I don’t have to set them with powder and instead just a spray of skindinavia.

love it cj ;-D I was surprised, I thought maybe it would be too dry but it was actually quite beautiful!

OMG OMG OMG I’ve been stalking this on Sephora’s website ever since your first post about it. I talked myself into waiting until Christmas to pick it up (I have to wait until I’m in a Sephora that sells this for foundation-matching purposes), and now I’m back to wanting it so bad that I don’t want to wait another 3 months. lol

I picked up Clinique’s new pore refining foundation last weekend, and I love it! I still really want this foundation, though. 😡

    • the Muse

kb happy to hear you love pore refining, I’m loving it too! Givenchy Airy Light Mat is equally amazing but def wait for Sephora FF, save some $$!

      • K.B.

That was supposed to be a sheepish face, not an angry face. lol

Sephora F&F – good idea! I usually use that opportunity to stock up on skincare products, but I might have to treat myself to this foundation, too. You’re a genius! 😉

        • the Muse

I def stock up on skincare too hehehe ;-D! can’t wait!!!!!!!!! FF I’m waiting ;-D

You have me wanting to try all kinds of foundations!! I have dry skin and typically prefer dewy finish.. I will try a sample first! Do you know when sephora is going to have that 20% off?

    • the Muse

“It doesn’t have a velvety or powdery dry down (…). It also has second-skin like technology that melds with skin creating natural yet long lasting results”

    Dear Muse,

I keep reading about “second skin”, “skin-fusion”… I had the chance to try a product that’s in that category — Diorskin Forever Fluid. You’ve described a few foundations like this: Givenchy Éclat Matissime, EsteeLauder Invisible Fluid and Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua.

However, I’ve been desperately searching for a BB Cream / Tinted Moisturizer with such description. Can you tell me of any? Is Smashbox ‘Camera Ready’ BB Cream or Nars ‘Pure Radiant’ Tinted Moisturizer anything like that?

I’ve also read reviews on Clarins BB Cream and Diorsnow BB Cream that made me think they might be that kind of product — with a non-powdery dry-down and a skin-fusion property.
I’m under the impression that this ‘non-powdery dry-down’ will be dismissing the setting powder and that powdery finish I hate.

Thank you so much! Love your website!

hi rcl sorry for the delayed reply.

I think in most experiences I’ve had BB Creams always have an excellent skin fusion type of finish. I’ve never tried the NARS Pure Radiant TM so can’t say on that unfortunately but both Clarins and Dior have a similar consistency that’s second skin-like finish. For the longest time I disliked Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation but it also has an equally creamy, moist feel that’s like skin! As well as their BB Cream/Beauty Balm which I loved from the get go.

If you look in my archives you’ll find a TON of BB Cream reviews that all have great dewy moist finishes 🙂

      Hope this helps!

Thanks 🙂 so glad you enjoy musings of a muse!
