Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick Review, Photos, Swatches

This was provided to me by a brand for review but all opinions expressed are my own

Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick ($28) is a newly launched liquid lipstick from the brand for Fall 2012. Hourglass created these with a matte super pigmented finish and a 14 hour contentious wear without being drying or flaking.

They had me at the non drying, flaking part because I tend to do rather poorly with matte lipstick. I’ve run across a few matte formulas I enjoy using but if I’m honest I’m always reaching for the clear gloss to wear them with.

Let’s take a look at Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick.

Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick has a smooth texture which wraps lips up in a hug of pigmented color. Yes, hug. I felt like the color hugged lips and created a second-skin-like finish that wrapped lips up in smooth color. The lip color is a thicker texture that starts out glossy but sets to a matte finish within a few seconds of wear.

Application is very smooth and flawless however, you do have to have a good working surface for color to adhere to. I suggest exfoliating lips prior to remove any dry, flaky skin as color will look less than smooth if you have drier, flakier lips. I also noticed that the color is crazy uncomfortable at first application. It feels very tacky at first and rather heavy but as it sets the feeling lessens so just give it about five minutes as that seems to be the time it takes for it to lighten up and lose the unusual tackiness.

What you see is basically what you get in terms of color. A single stroke yields full color pay off and shades are all opaque. This isn’t a sheer lipstick by any means. Colors are bold, vibrant, and produce full pigmentation after a single application. But don’t worry, they are completely wearable as well since Hourglass created both bold and easier to wear shades.

The product sets well and I didn’t experience any migration through the wear nor did it feather around my lip line. I did drink a spot of tea and had a nibble of a pretzel while wearing it and the color didn’t seem to transfer. However, I didn’t have a full meal with them in place. Color begins to loose some of its intensity around five hours in but for the most part it looks almost as fresh as when I originally applied. Rather impressive. I couldn’t get past a six hour period though and started wanting to remove it after five because it began to feel a bit drying and also saw some minor flaking. It proves a little iffy to remove so you do need an oil based cleanser to get it fully off.

Overall, the promise of long wear is here. Not sure about 14 hours but all day wear is a strong possibility from say nine to five. I don’t necessarily need my lip color to last that long but it sure is novel to have it do so. Now wouldn’t it be nice if a glossy liquid lipstick would be as strong wearing?

If you need full performance from your lip color I’d suggest trying these out.

Thank you for reviewing and the swatches? I have been wanting to try as don’t really have any long wear lippies. Eyeing canvas as maybe it will offset some of the color in my lips! F&f list for now!

I was eyeing this one the other day, but I ended up ordering the Shiseido Lacquer Rouge instead. I’ll have to eventually give this Hourglass one a try though. I love how pigmented it is. Hopefully my dry lips don’t get in the way though lol.

The Rose color is my favorite on you, Muse! It just makes your whole face glow! So pretty!

I splurged on 3 Hourglass lipsticks and I have to say they are my favorites (especially Raven but I also have Nocturnal and Grace). I would love to try this product and maybe I will during F&F.

I think both colors look good on you but I kind of like the lighter one just because its a color you don’t usually go for. LOL

I’ve seriously been wanting to try these. I think the packaging is really chic. Not sure why I love the shape so much!

I got one of these in Icon, the blueish red. I’m absolutely fascinated by it, never thought I would be brave enough to wear such a bright red but it actually works. I will buy another more subtle color. After seeing your pictures, I’m leaning towards Rose.

sierra really want that color, I was a little scared of it but it looks stunning!!!!!!!!

These colors are very flattering on you…but your poor lips look like they are crying out for moisture! No can do matte. Maybe one day, some company will really crack the code, but for the most part when I see matte lips I see dry and uncomfortable.
