Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows Barely Beige Review, Swatches, Photos

Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow in Barely Beige is one of eight new, limited edition shades for Fall 2012. I was quite excited about this launch as I really love the Color Tattoo formula.

For a long time I hated cream eyeshadows but I’ve migrated more and more to the formula in the last several years. Maybelline did a fabulous job with this formulation plus you can get these little pots for as little as $5.99 in some locations. Combine that with a Buy 1, Get 1 50% Off and you have a fantastic little beauty budget steal.

Take a look!

Ahh Barely Beige is gaining quite a following due to the fact that it’s been compared to MAC Bare Study Paint Pot. With MAC’s Paint Pot ($17.50) weighting in at 0.17oz and Maybelline ($5.99) coming up just shy at .14oz you can easily see the better bargain here.

Although they swatch very similiar I didn’t feel like Barely Beige was a complete dupe for Bare Study. Bare Study has a bit more light reflecting pearl to it. In comparison, Barely Beige is has more creamy beige to it and lacks the reflectiveness of Bare Study. Bare Study is actually a far nicer shade in my opinion and contains less frost than Barely Beige.

MAC Barely Study and Barely Beige

Barely Beige

But that’s not to say Barely Beige isn’t pretty, it is in its own right. This is a creamy pearlish beige with a frosty sometimes metallic finish (really depends how much you apply). The formula is excellent as it blends easily, has a nice creamy feel with a certain density, and a true to pot color on lids. I find the formula and texture varies from shade to shade with Color Tattoos that’s why I like reviewing them individually. In this case, the formula performs quite well.

My issue with the shade is the fact it comes across too frosty if too many layers are applied so just be careful with application. Although the shade works nicely to brighten eyes up and does a fine natural eye look I didn’t really like the color. It just doesn’t do well with my skin tone for some reason and I end up looking a little too 60’s mod when wearing it.

Overall, Barely Beige is another nice addition to your Color Tattoo wardrobe if you love these cream shadows from Maybelline. It’s a nice highlighting color or great for a sheer wash of color. It’s also a nice Bare Study-like shade, I wouldn’t say a complete dupe but fairly similiar.

Available now at drugstores.

Own it and Love it! And I don’t know what your talking about it looks lovely on you 🙂 I wear this on days I either don’t have time or don’t feel like going through a whole routine, dab with my finger and smooth on, done in less than a minute lol

    • the Muse

aw thanks cj! I felt a little too mod in it…! but I agree, GREAT quickie eye look on the go, no effort to it and it even brightens up eyes so you look more wide awake ;D

  • Cassie

Ughhhh Muse I want this shade so badly!! I have scoured the drugstores, the grocery stores, the everything in a thirty mile radius and no where carries these more neutral limited edition shades that they released (only the really jewel tone limited edition ones). I wish I knew why they aren’t in stores around me 🙁

      • Cassie

I tried looking for it on evil bay not too long ago and I’ve only been able to find it for $12!! Plus the sellers want shipping money for it!! For that I may as well go buy a paint pot or something haha. At least it’ll be super satisfying once I get my hands on it (which I hope eventually happens!).

        • the Muse

ugh that’s awful high 🙁 I hope you find it soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Jen_m_sunshine

Cassie – have you tried Bed Bath and Beyound? That’s where I ended up finding them and don’t forget your coupon if you go hunting!!!

  • Colleen

Thank you for this review! I recently purchased the limited edition colors of Mossy Green and Gold Shimmer, but passed up the Barely Beige and Mahogany because I had paint pots from MAC that were similar. Lately though I’ve been wondering if I made a mistake in passing up Barely Beige, but after your swatches and review comparison, I feel better about my decision to pass up the color when I already had Bare Study from MAC

    • the Muse

my pleasure colleen 😀 glad it helped hun! I really don’t think you need both. Bare Study is quite similiar!

  • JenJ

I own and have worn it all over the with a dark brown shadow in the crease and outer corner. Said I was going to try it with dark blue or purple. I likes it 😀

  • OrangeLipstickBlog

I like this shade but it barely shows up on me! I have quite fair skin and I feel like I really have to build this up to see it. It works nicely for a natural eye and I do love the formula!

  • JoElla

I wonder if they will make these part of the core line?

Remember we didn’t know if the tats were LE’s at first.

I own this and love it, reach for it the most out of my collection.

    • the Muse

they have sticks on them that say LE 🙁 I WISH as I wouldn’t feel the overwhelming need to haul backups!

  • Kiss & Make-up

I don’t own it and I don’t plan on getting this particular shade (too neutral/nude for me), but I do like the Color Tattoos.

  • Kitten

Seriously muse, don’t know what you’re talking about, I love it on you!! I just hunted this past weekend (went to 9 places before finding it!!!) looking for it since I’d like to use it for wedding pictures, can’t wait to try it! <3

    • the Muse

aw thanks kitten…it’s just a sheer layer if I put more on it’s scary looking hehe!

  • ShannoninBC

Still waiting for these to arrive in Canada…Maybelline says end of Oct?! crazy delay between US and Canada releases…grrrr

  • D-tan

I have been able to track all the other shades down except this one! I’ve looked at the ones in my area and even checked in Vegas when I was there over Labor Day weekend!!

I hope one day to find it since it looks very fabu 🙁

  • Lulubelle

I just bought a back up of this yesterday, I like it so much! I’m using it as a base for my shadows, so the frostiness is not an issue there. It makes for a nice brow bone highlighter as well!

I’m really disappointed these are LE, as the formula for all except the Mossy Green is so much better than the earlier editions.

  • sara

I agree with you muse. This one was a frosty mess on my lids. I just didn’t like it all:( I think if this shade was in a matte formula it would have been better? Gold shimmer however is the standout, and worth driving around to find:)

  • Autumn Rush

I can’t find this anywhere! 🙁 I have Too Cool, and I think it is way too frosty. This looks a lot easier to work with!

  • Quinctia

I think it looks fab on you, I bet you’d find it a little less mod if you dabbed a contrast in the crease. Or did a cat-eye. (I personally am completely unable to do cat-eye liner, but that’d be a great shadow to do it over. XD)

    • the Muse

indeed quinctia nice natural for a cat eye damn wish I could too, I suck at cat lines 😀

  • Amy

Ug, it is frosty, and if I put even a little bit too much on my eyes look super old after it dries–like it makes all the normal little eyelid textures look far more pronounced (I’m only 28!). Yours looks looks fantastic, though, far smoother. perhaps I need to skip the UDPP…

    • the Muse

yeah amy, it isn’t the best color from the three warm shades 🙁 Try applying a little and blending out with your finger…skip the UDPP for sure!

  • sugarBear

I’m going to be hunting this down along with Mossy Green today! wish me luck, lol! I should have bought it when I first saw it but I am so picky with drug store products since we can’t open them & swatch. Now i see it on you & i want!! gorgeous 🙂

  • BooBooNinja

    Hi Isabella,

Thanks for doing a separate review on this one. I was lucky enough to find this in the drugstore, except in Canada it’s $10! From your review, I think this cheaper “version” will do fine for me. I was planning on using it as an inner corner highlight or as a sheer wash across the lids, in both capacities either alone or as a base for a powder highlight.

I have yet to open it as I’m testing out a little sample of MAC Bare Study. Bare Study is my first experience with a cream shadow and it has a pleasant consistency. I hope Barely Beige will perform similarly for me!

  • Jade

I REALLY REALLY WANT THIS. It better come out in Australia! I’ve been waiting patiently!

  • Jane

Muse, how is this barely beige different from the metals collection, barely branded? I can’t find it at any online drugstore! 🙁

I don’t live in US so I need to get it all the way from the online shop 🙁

  • Sam Mavity

    Hey,
thanks for the review! It really helped, aas I tend to be skittish about buying beauty products. I am trying for a minimalistic make up collection, and you look very nice trying it on so its reassuring lol.
