Tarte Statement Lips LipSurgence Collector’s Set Holiday 2012 Review, Swatches, Photos

This was provided to me by a brand for review but all opinions expressed are my own

Squee! Tarte has a new LipSurgence Collector’s Set for Holiday 2012 entitled Statement Lips. I’m so happy about this because I really love the LipSurgence formula. I’m terrible about lipstick and gloss touch up throughout the day so having one of these in my purse or desk drawer is a makeup god sent. It’s just easier to slick it on for some nice moisture and a hint of tint.

And five full size LipSurgence Lip Tints for $34 bucks? Holy wicked deal Batman!

Take a look!

Don’t go by the Sephora details ladies as they list these as matte when in fact you are getting a variety of formulas. Last year’s set was five full size pencils for $29 so the price has increased a tiny bit but still one pencil is $24 and you’re getting five, do the math, total steal eh?

If you never tried these before you’re in for a treat as they leave lips nicely hydrated with a dash of tint. They have a balmy texture that moisturizes lips through the wear with a slight sheen in the finish and just the right amount of tint to give lips a lovely bitten look. Colors build easily as well for more pop.

I think the kit brings a nice bit of variety to your lip world since it includes the original LipSurgence Lip Tint, the Lip Luster formula, and also the Matte Lip Tint formula. You get two each of the original formula and Lip Luster one and one matte finish. I’m glad they only include one matte as I’m not much of a matte girl. The original formula has a shiny finish where as the Lusters have a shimmery one.

All the pencils have an MLBB look (my lips but better) to them and offer sheer to medium color pay off (when built up). They come in a handle chubby pencil design which features a swivel up and down mechanism rather than a sharpener. I find they don’t wear down super quickly so the point does stick around for a good while.

The shades are all new to this set however, check your stash because you might have a shade from a QVC Set that launched previously. I have around 15 of these in my own collection and I ran through them all and didn’t find these colors. Although similiar to shades in the general catalog they aren’t available outside of this set. On that note look out for the It’s a Wonderful Lip Gift Set coming soon from QVC which is a five piece selection of LipSurgence as well!

Sweet, Enchanted, Exposed, Elite, Escape

You get:

  • Lip Tints in Enchanted (Sheer Rose) and Elite (sheer melon)
  • Lusters in Escape (shimmering pink) and Sweet (shimmering peachy pink)
  • Matte Lip Tint in Exposed (perfect nude)

Note: My lips swatches are a bit off. It’s a rainy day in Gotham so natural light was limited. Also my lips are chapped which made the shades look more red than they really are. Apologies.

Overall, this set is a steal. Tarte continues to please with their Holiday offerings. Many brands will offer you a vast array of goodies for the season in some set or another but Tarte is one of the few that gifts you with full size EVERYTHING in their gift sets. Fantastic for yourself or a friend, this set is a bargain not to be missed.

Last year this set was either $25 or $29 dollars. I hauled it during the friends and family sale at Sephora. Man the yearly price increases on makeup are killing me. MAC lipsticks are up to $15! But what’s a makeup addict to do? Must buy new makeup.

    • the Muse

yeah mentioned it in the review ;-D I still think it’s a good deal as one is $24 dollars and you’re getting five! but def agreed, mac has gone up and I’m waiting on Lush price jacks in January 🙁

      • Sara Elisabeth

Oops! Sorry didn’t read the review, as I bought last year’s set. As you said it is still a good value, but I like them better with the purple caps over the gold caps.

  • Nicki

Perhaps a good gift for you AND a friend?
This is such a steal. I think it’s closer to $35 CAD but I’ll live with the price hike.

  • Ruth

gah! *arms flail with want!* I’m adding this to my shopping cart, just waiting for sephora’s FF sale.

  • Lisa

I think the only shade that is in its permanent line is Exposed and Enchanted, so only three of them are exclusive to this set 🙂

  • Suselew

I just got my set and love it! I do have one dupe but I’ll pass it to my daughter-in-law. I love the twist up design SO MUCH BETTER than the recent ones with the sharpener/cap.

    • the Muse

is it shimmering peach by chance suse? as it looks similiar to a shade I already own but it’s an orgasm-like shade so I was greedy and kept it lol!

  • elizabeth

Wow, $34? That seems like a really big increase in price from last year’s set. I actually tried to go see what I paid last year on sephora’s website, but I can’t find it. I’ve noticed that since they changed their site you can’t see the actual price you paid for each item if it’s gone up.

    • the Muse

listed the price from last year in the post elizabeth, not really that big a difference from last year, $5 or so 🙂

      • elizabeth

Idk, that’s over 17% of a price increase. I wish my pay had gone up that much!

        • the Muse

I don’t really see it being that bad considering you’re getting over 100 dollars worth of product. if you purchase one stick it’s $24 bucks, this has five, still a deal 🙂

          • Fiends

Totally agree with you on this. This set is an AMAZING deal!

Tarte is my favorite “high end” brand (to me it is high end, I dont buy anything like Chanel, Armani, YSL etc), for 3 reasons-
It is a cruelty free brand
It is on the more natural side of things, which is really nice
            And everything is outstanding quality!

Oh and another thing, the holiday sets are a steal 🙂

  • D-tan

I’m going to die with 2 sets of 5 LipSurgences!! Last year I had a hard enough time locating the one set that was released, but managed to snag it on QVC which sold out a few days after I got mine. But 10 new ones??? My wallet weeps in pain!!

  • Twirishlady

Oh! I am so glad you liked these 🙂 I couldn’t wait for a review and I ordered them online. They should be waiting for my in my mailbox as we speak! 🙂

      • Jen_m_sunshine

Muse, did you see code I sent you yesterday? I just got an actual emai from sephora with same code in it for 10% off and think they sent it to all VIB. Am thinking I might bite the bullet and order the tarte lip surgence set and the laura e/s palette instead of waiting for F&F…am sure by then I will have other :wants: to apply the 20% off to! I swear my hubby is going to cut up all my credit cards between purchases here and preorders at Nordstrom!

        • the Muse

I didn’t sorry! my email is a little hairy, GOSH thanks for sending that you’re freaking awesome! I don’t think Sephora sent me one! Odd!!!!!!!!!!!!! are you sure I can use it? Is it one time use only? Wouldn’t want to use it and you got left out in the cold if I did! I def wanna wait for 20% but 10% is just as awesome lol ! HA! just don’t blame me if he does *wink* thanks again jen! Will look through my email and reply shortly! Sorry about the delayed reply!

      • Twirishlady

Oh my gosh, Oh my gosh, OH MY GOSH! I am IN LOVE with Exposed! I cannot believe what it does for my lips. It’s like, my whole life I was waiting for it but didn’t know. I am complete! And the other colors are fabulous also! This totes doesn’t disappoint!

  • diane

i love you for just referring to nyc as gotham HAHA
i have sweet, exposed & enchanted already. all beautiful colors. can’t wait to see what’s in the QVC kit!

    • the Muse

hehe I’ve been calling it gotham for years I has nerd issues lol! ;-D Not so far off though right?! ;-D

      • diane

absolutely not far off..and im so down with..i got my dog a batman costume for halloween and i have a batgirl costume..now THATS nerdy! haha =D

        • the Muse

*hangs head in shame* I have a batgirl costume too, don’t tell ANYONE I said that lol! ;-D off topic of BM but did you grab JL #12? I got one to read, one to frame hehe!

  • Winni

Thank you for swatching these! I have been waiting to make sure I don’t have the colors. I love Lipsurgence and am THRILLED to hear QVC will have a set too! Yay!!

  • Gaby

Hello!! any idea when the collection is going to be out at ulta.com? Love your blog by the way!! I check everyday!

    • the Muse

aw thanks gaby! <3! Seems ulta will start stocking in store second week of October or so!

  • Ashley

Hmm I was really hoping it was a set of mattes and not a mix. Actually, if they stuck to just the original formula I’d be content too but the lusters are no good to me. The shimmers always exaggerate t he amount of lip wrinkles I have >:T

  • Kristina

The Enchanted one is not exclusive to the set. I actually picked that up at Sephora a while back….. June or so?

  • Karena

Thanks so much for swatching these, Muse!! MY SET IS ON THE WAY TO ME RIGHT NOW! 🙂

  • Lulle

Exposed is my favorite here. I like these lippies, but I wish they were not mint-scented 🙁 I don’t like mint on my lips!

  • Nicki

Thank you for the swatches Muse! I picked my set up today, along with the dior perk… Haha.

  • Sweta

    Hi Muse

I ahve neevr tried these before,,although they look super on you..do you think these colors will flatter my nc42 skintone? I am eager to use my VIB 10% off code on these..but want to make sure if these will be as flattering on me as on you..;)

    • the Muse

I’m not sure sweta as I’m not too familiar with the mac skin tone range…! I imagine they’ll look fine on many skin tones but you might wanna swatch in store just to be safe 😀

  • Michou

I just got these today and I am IN LOVE. I’m surprised at how my lips still feel moisturized with the matte formula (I was so afraid to try it but now am so glad I did. I may eventually get some more colors from the mattte line!)

    😀

  • Kells

Not enough darker colors as last year, I’m disappointed, mostly all the same colors especially if you are standing in front of someone or taking a pic, which is almost everyone.

  • CC

Love them! I havent worn lipstick or much color on my lips in quite awhile, but these and the Stila lipglaze sets are getting me there 😉

  • bertha

I can’t stop wanting these. I love the color exposed and it makes me want to stock up on this set…it’s so much nicer to spend the money on five instead of just one, and as long as I get exposed I’m happy LOL. Do you know if there are expiration dates on the tarte lipsurgences?

    • the Muse

i have this comment and the one that dated 12/18 Fiends. Perhaps it didn’t go through, no reason to curse me out. Simply leave it again.
