Urban Decay Vice Palette Review, Swatches, Photos
Urban Decay launched their new Vice Palette for Holiday 2012 ($59) as a one day sale only this weekend. If you didn’t snag it during the one day sale, no worries, it’ll be available again at the end of this month.
This palette features twenty new shades of shadow exclusive to the Vice Palette and a double ended Good Karma Shadow and Crease Brush for application.
I’ve already swatched it for you and today I’ll be reviewing.
Have a look!
I think it’s safe to say that Urban Decay has stepped out of its Book of Shadow phase and into a more a newer, slicker packaging with The Vice Palette. This compact is a slick, thinner compact featuring a sparkling UD icon on the cover. Although smaller in size (it’s 7 inches wide) it packs a huge full size mirror. The palette opens at the push of a button located at the bottom middle of the compact but it actually opens easily without pushing the button as well if you desire.
On a rant…it’s made of a soft touch rubber that’s kinda NARS-like but not quite. This rubber is a magnet for fingerprints, eyeshadow, etc…I’m a little worried that after a few uses it’ll get as messy as my NARS blushes do when I use them. You might want to tuck a towel or a wash cloth over it to avoid spilling eyeshadow or powder on it during application.
I couldn’t help but think to myself as much as I loved the Book of Shadows packaging, this is a lot less bulky and clumsy plus it stores easier as it isn’t nearly as thick as a BoS.
Although you’re getting twenty brand new shades of exclusive shadow in the Vice Palette you can easily find a few dupes from past palettes or Urban Decay single eyeshadows here. There are shades in the mix that aren’t exactly duplications of colors you already own but are quite similiar to past shades. Each shade is 0.03 oz in size with the palette being a total of 0.60 oz total. Typically Urban Decay Eyeshadows are 0.05 oz so you’re getting nearly a full size of product here plus factor in the Good Karma brush and the palette is over $200 worth of product.
The palette is made up of satin, shimmer, sparkle, matte, and velvet eyeshadow formulations. You get a little bit of everything here although the mattes are limited to three shades so if that’s your fav finish, you might be disappointed. The formula of each shade varies so there isn’t consistent quality for each color. Each shade has its own pigmentation, texture, and application issues. Quite a few shades had a chunky glittery consistency with a bit of fall out where as others had a smooth, buttery application, intense color, and an easy to blend formula.
Desperation, Muse, Jagged
Firebird and Laced
Nevermind, Echo Beach, and Anonymous
Vice, Noise, and Armor
Black Market, Provocateur, and Rapture
Chaos, Occupy, and Unhinged
Blitz, Penny Lane, and Junkie
Almost all the shades proved very nice however as much as I loved Jagged, it’s a khaki, darker olive green with gold glitter, the formula was a gritty, dry mess and difficult to apply (I’m wearing it in my FOTD below).
I did experience a good deal of fall out with shades like Provocateur, Jagged, and Junkie but you can avoid some of that fall out using a sponge tipped eyeshadow applicator for application. These pack color on the lid easily and you’ll find that it minimizes fall out.
I wasn’t surprised how much I liked the matte finishes in this mix. Urban Decay had a range of mattes that I indulged in years ago and enjoy using. You know how much I dislike this finish but these are smooth and easy to apply. No dryness or patchy application with these shades.
The palette does have some stand out shades for me like Penny Lane (softer peachy bronze), Provocateur (metallic mauve-y pink), Junkie (dark green with gold shimmer), and Firebird (soft pink with soft silver shimmer).
Overall, if you’re an Urban Decay fan you should be pleased with the Vice Palette and I imagine it’ll be on your wish list. Some of the shades are definitely similiar to colors you may already own but others in the palette may just tempt you enough to indulge. At $59 it is a value as you’re getting a good deal of product for your buck plus the Good Karma Brush which is quite lovely. Many will love this palette and others might find it a bit repetitive to past Urban Decay releases but facts is facts, it’s a great deal with a large selection of fabulous colors.
It launches officially September 27th and will be available at Ulta, Sephora, Macy’s, and urbandecay.com
