Urban Decay Vice Palette Review, Swatches, Photos

This was provided to me by a brand for review but all opinions expressed are my own

Urban Decay launched their new Vice Palette for Holiday 2012 ($59) as a one day sale only this weekend. If you didn’t snag it during the one day sale, no worries, it’ll be available again at the end of this month.

This palette features twenty new shades of shadow exclusive to the Vice Palette and a double ended Good Karma Shadow and Crease Brush for application.

I’ve already swatched it for you and today I’ll be reviewing.

Have a look!

I think it’s safe to say that Urban Decay has stepped out of its Book of Shadow phase and into a more a newer, slicker packaging with The Vice Palette. This compact is a slick, thinner compact featuring a sparkling UD icon on the cover. Although smaller in size (it’s 7 inches wide) it packs a huge full size mirror. The palette opens at the push of a button located at the bottom middle of the compact but it actually opens easily without pushing the button as well if you desire.

On a rant…it’s made of a soft touch rubber that’s kinda NARS-like but not quite. This rubber is a magnet for fingerprints, eyeshadow, etc…I’m a little worried that after a few uses it’ll get as messy as my NARS blushes do when I use them. You might want to tuck a towel or a wash cloth over it to avoid spilling eyeshadow or powder on it during application.

I couldn’t help but think to myself as much as I loved the Book of Shadows packaging, this is a lot less bulky and clumsy plus it stores easier as it isn’t nearly as thick as a BoS.

Although you’re getting twenty brand new shades of exclusive shadow in the Vice Palette you can easily find a few dupes from past palettes or Urban Decay single eyeshadows here. There are shades in the mix that aren’t exactly duplications of colors you already own but are quite similiar to past shades. Each shade is 0.03 oz in size with the palette being a total of 0.60 oz total. Typically Urban Decay Eyeshadows are 0.05 oz so you’re getting nearly a full size of product here plus factor in the Good Karma brush and the palette is over $200 worth of product.

The palette is made up of satin, shimmer, sparkle, matte, and velvet eyeshadow formulations. You get a little bit of everything here although the mattes are limited to three shades so if that’s your fav finish, you might be disappointed. The formula of each shade varies so there isn’t consistent quality for each color. Each shade has its own pigmentation, texture, and application issues. Quite a few shades had a chunky glittery consistency with a bit of fall out where as others had a smooth, buttery application, intense color, and an easy to blend formula.

Desperation, Muse, Jagged

Firebird and Laced

Nevermind, Echo Beach, and Anonymous

Vice, Noise, and Armor

Black Market, Provocateur, and Rapture

Chaos, Occupy, and Unhinged

Blitz, Penny Lane, and Junkie

Almost all the shades proved very nice however as much as I loved Jagged, it’s a khaki, darker olive green with gold glitter, the formula was a gritty, dry mess and difficult to apply (I’m wearing it in my FOTD below).

I did experience a good deal of fall out with shades like Provocateur, Jagged, and Junkie but you can avoid some of that fall out using a sponge tipped eyeshadow applicator for application. These pack color on the lid easily and you’ll find that it minimizes fall out.

I wasn’t surprised how much I liked the matte finishes in this mix. Urban Decay had a range of mattes that I indulged in years ago and enjoy using. You know how much I dislike this finish but these are smooth and easy to apply. No dryness or patchy application with these shades.

The palette does have some stand out shades for me like Penny Lane (softer peachy bronze), Provocateur (metallic mauve-y pink), Junkie (dark green with gold shimmer), and Firebird (soft pink with soft silver shimmer).

Overall, if you’re an Urban Decay fan you should be pleased with the Vice Palette and I imagine it’ll be on your wish list. Some of the shades are definitely similiar to colors you may already own but others in the palette may just tempt you enough to indulge. At $59 it is a value as you’re getting a good deal of product for your buck plus the Good Karma Brush which is quite lovely. Many will love this palette and others might find it a bit repetitive to past Urban Decay releases but facts is facts, it’s a great deal with a large selection of fabulous colors.

It launches officially September 27th and will be available at Ulta, Sephora, Macy’s, and urbandecay.com

Will you be indulging?

I was really disappointed to hear about Jagged, that was one color that immediately drew my attention. Apparently it’s a big ol’ hot glitter mess. :'[ Overall, there are a few other colors I feel like I need, but I’ll be putting this on Santa’s x-mas list. I can wait!

    • the Muse

it is it is…it’s gorg! It’s a khaki green brownish concoction…love it! but what a mess!

      • Cindy

I can forgive them though. UD gets a big plus for naming an eyeshadow Rapture. That pleases the inner Bioshock fangirl in me!

  • K.B.

I want this so bad, but I already let you talk me into the Lorac Pro Palette. lol I have more eyeshadow palettes than I know what to do with (I rarely wear eyeshadow).

  • Tigress

I bought this within an hour of it launching on their website, even though I had already spent most of my money on Green Day tickets. I’m living off of crackers, but it’s totally worth it.

    • Cindy

I have totally been there, done that. Instead of crackers, I lived off of my rice cooker and a 5lb bag of rice. Totally worth it! I hope there’s a payday for you in the very near future.

Two things: I know I will cave, it’s just a matter of when

next, your look is DIVINE. OMG your brown peepers look sooooo good (just deal with the fall out and tricky application b/c you will seduce the world anytime you wear this eye look out-and-about!)

The tightlining looks so good on you. Mwah. Perfection!

    • the Muse

you are TOO kind girl! the color is gorg but I look a little drowned out ;-D <3! I heart you hard!

  • Victoria

Wow I am definitely liking basically all of these colors! Maybe this will be my first actual UD Palatte?! A bit bummed about jagged as well bc it looks gorgeous… maybe if you use it wet it would be better?

  • Quinctia

I’m happy with the palette, I’ll definitely be picking it up. Didn’t feel the need to rush with the one day sale, because there will be time with the big launch. (Plus, Ulta changed its rewards program so I can use points to get money off a purchase there.)

After the launch of those three smaller palettes where I owned every product in them but two eyeshadows and one gloss, I’m happy to see one with new colors! I also ended picking up a single of Mushroom since any palette that has it now would have too many repeats for me. 😀

Great review Muse! Junkie is my fave, and I also like provocateur, vice, penny lane, and firebird; but I dig desperation as well.

  • Phyrra

Jagged, Provocateur and Free Bird were the 3 I experienced the dreaded UD chunky fallout. I thought Jagged might be nice on top of a black base, but it’s suuuch a sheer shade.

I can’t believe how much I loved Black Market and all the greys. Junkie is definitely drool worthy, as is Chaos.

This palette is so much fun 🙂

  • Smidge

I love how elegant this palette looks and the massive mirror, but I already have a TON of UD eyeshadows and only a few of these look different enough to seek out. Knowing me, I’ll still get it though. XD

  • Jennifer

Hi, Muse. What lip and cheek are you wearing in this look? They’re perfect!

    • the Muse

gosh jennifer I can’t recall 🙁 sorry lol! I’m looking at that pic but nothing is ringing a bell!
