Kat Von D Foiled Love Liquid Lipstick Review & Swatches

This was provided to me by a brand for review but all opinions expressed are my own

Kat Von D Foiled Love Liquid Lipstick ($19) launched in four shades for Fall 2012. These are a dramatic liquid lipstick with a rich color pay off.

I was a little scared of the shade I tried, Adora.

Take a look!

Adora is a candy apple red that I’ve always wished I could rock. It was originally introduced as a regular lipstick in the collection and has since extended to a gloss and now a liquid lipstick. It’s sadly a little clown-y on me but SUCH a gorgeous candy apple metallic red shade that just begs to be worn….perhaps not out of my house though!

About the only thing I’d rant about regarding Kat Von D’s Foiled Love Liquid Lipstick is the lack of shades. With a mere four shades to choose from this collection really lacks variety.

I have no great love for liquid lipstick but these are very comfortable to wear. The formula is lightweight with a slick silicone-like texture that glides across lips in an even, smooth finish. It does have a foiled or metallic finish with a dramatic color pay off so the name is justified. Pigmentation is excellent as a single stroke over lips produces rich color pay off.

Although not necessarily hydrating the formula doesn’t suck moisture from lips either and wears for a solid three to four hours before showing minor wear and fading. But even after it fades you’ll still be left with a nice bit of stain.

Typically liquid lipsticks have a matte or velvety formula that sometimes proves a little heavy and drying. Foiled Love Liquid Lipstick was a refreshing change from the norm with a lighter texture and killer pigment that really pops!

Likey!

The shade selection, as mentioned above, is lacking otherwise these would gain a Muse Approval. A few more natural colors maybe a peach or two and I’d be a happy girl. Because even though I loved Adora, I simply can’t rock it.

These are available now at Sephora and Sephora.com

Tried ’em?

Love to hear your thoughts!

Wow, this looks so pigmented and opaque! I have a real soft spot for raspberry shades too!

    • the Muse

Hey Sunny! all four shades are crazy pigmented ;-D they did a good job in terms of color just wish they had a wider range of it. Only four boo 🙁 PS Nice to see you commenting here such a big fan of mostlysunnybunny 🙂

    • the Muse

you guys are great for my ego crango ;-D not sure it’s me but thank you!

  • Julie

So, so pretty on you! And can we talk for one second about how much I love your brows?! 😀

  • BLee

Hi, Muse. Im new and just wanted to say you can rock that shade..in fact you make it look great!

  • Leigh

The Muse look clownish? NEVER! That shade looks great on you! I just think the lighting washed you out a bit in this pic. 😉

    • the Muse

aw thanks leigh you’re VERY kind 🙂 agreed, sorry about that, I’ve been getting sunlight overload in my bathroom lately! need to find a new spot to take pics ;D

  • Jenny D

Ohh how pretty! Now I can decide between this one, Stila, and Hourglass. Nearly all of my lip products are bright red, and this is a gorgeous red. Love it!

  • Lorraine ER

I think there are ways you could make this more wearable- just for this shade, try a lighter blush. Maybe bronzer instead of blush? Hair down, just liner, curled lashes and mascara and if it’s still feeling bold you could put a light colored gloss on top?
It just seems so pretty not to wear out!
Anyhow, I think it looks nice on you.

    • the Muse

lorraine excellent tips thanks ;-D I’ll give a whirl maybe with a little eyeliner only…could work ;-D

    • Lisa

every woman can rock a red lip – it just has to be the right red! That being said, I felt as Lorraine said: a bronzer rather than the pretty (but in this case clashing) color blush you wore in the pic, a lined eye and you’d be good to go with this color chica. 🙂

      • the Muse

hey lisa, yeah, agreed 😀 I def clashed here…not sure though on the color even with bronzer, I feel like a clown wearing it hehe ;-D

  • Quinctia

I think it looks good on you, but I never want to do red myself, either. So I totally get why you don’t like it.

I tend to go for red in glosses so I can use it very, very sparingly, haha!

    • the Muse

same here!!!!!!!!! ;D and thank you! not so sure but appreciate the love ;D

  • Caitlin

I’m going to break with the crowd and say I thought it was a little too pinky/blue a red for your skin tone. It’s not bad, but it’s not a perfect red for you, either. You can definitely rock red, I just don’t think this is the best one. The formula looks great, though. I love me some liquid lipstick.

    • the Muse

agreed!!!!!!!!! I def think it’s too bright for me ;-D thanks for the rec on the other shade btw! I had it in my cart a few times already was thinking I’d wait for FF! ;-D

  • Caitlin

Aaaand, I just looked at the colors and they actually have a more maroon red. I think you should try it!

  • Tennyoceres

You should try wearing that shade more often. It looks good on you! I made a New Year’s resolution to rock some bright red lipstick after a lifetime of ‘safe’ lip colors. The key is to balance out your red lipstick with bold eyebrows or bold mascara. Red lipstick has drastically reduced my makeup routine (down to just brow pencil, eyeliner, and red lipstick) and makes teeth look whiter. My skin tone is almost the same as yours. Take the dive and I’ll see you in the deep end! =D

That said. I’m swatching this during my next Sephora day. I can’t get enough red lipstick now.

    • the Muse

aw thanks tenny I tend to go with more warmer reds 😀 those seem safer for me. good for you! get daring ;-D lol will do…! you should see if you can get a handle on some of the mac Marilyn Monroe reds SO gorg!

  • Nina

Wow… I think that red looks amazing on you. I actually think it is one of the prettiest lippies I have seen on you. =).

    • the Muse

damn nina thanks lol! I’m not much for red and this one seemed a little too clowny 😀 but thanks!

  • Rosie in NYC(makeup freak

Tres Chic My darling I might go for the Adora or Forever Very sexy and not clownish at all. <3 I am gonna try this.

  • Eli Caroline

Thank you for reviewing this. I’ve been curious about these. The Everlasting Love Liquid lipsticks are by far my favorite lipsticks of all time. I love that they go on all glossy but dry quickly to a matte like finish (I can’t stand glosses). And the wear time is incredible.

I was curious as to how “metallic” or foiled these would look once they set.

    • the Muse

hi eli! they have a very nice foiled finish, you can’t see it in the photos but it has a really pretty sheen to it that looks like liquid metal ;D cool effect!

    • the Muse

aw thanks dangster I can’t rock it in all honesty but maybe you can! ;-D

  • OrangeLipstickBlog

I have this one! I like it but I find I have to be very sparing in the application or it slides all over the place before drying down. This looks lovely on you!

  • Majick

I definitely think this looks just a little more blue than the lipstick of the same name. I have Adora foiled lipstick and love it – I always do warmer reds (or neutral, but I hate the blue or pinker ones).

Then again it could be the lighting in your bathroom and the pinky blush that makes it appear that way. I LOVE you in red lips – with your dark hair I think it’s just stunning.

Whenever I wear really bright or obnoxious (love) lippies I only do bronzer/highlighter, black liner, and mascara. Easy peasy face. I will however even out the tone on my eyelids wtih a little skintone shadow in a pearl/satin finish.

AHHH – you ROck no matter what! 😀

  • Victoria

Even though you say you can’t rock this, I think it looks absolutely GORGEOUS on you! Especially with your dark coloring. Va va voom!
