Maybelline Mossy Green Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadow Review & Swatches

I surely hope by now that all of you have gotten your hands on the new shades of Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows for Fall 2012.

Another of my favorites of the moment is Mossy Green but it isn’t without issue but this gorgeous shade is worthy of the hassle.

I love, love, love golden olive greens like this. They make my brown eyes pop!

Ok, so I will say you need this shade. Do pick it up. It’s terrible that Maybelline introduced it as an LE shade so a back up might be required for some.

But…

Even though it gains an approval I have to admit I had issues with application. Some Color Tattoos are a breeze to apply but others sometimes give me issues. I’m sure many of you have experienced the same. This is the type of shade that requires a brush and your finger to get into place correctly. I find if I pile color on using a brush and gently pat I can get the best finish and results. If I over blend with a finger the color tends to fade away and disappear. It is a bit of a challenge to build the shade up for the best intensity when it refuses to stay in place and just blends away into nothingness.

The shade is quite pigmented but there is building required to get the intensity I desired from it. Slow and steady wins the race. Rushing it results in fading, the bare skin of your lid showing through, and general patchiness.

But once you do have it applied perfectly, well, needless to say, it POPS!

Love this color.

Do grab a backup. I did!

Available now at drugstores.

I purchased this item.

  • Nora

That shade does look pretty awesome on you!

This is my first comment on your site! 🙂

    • the Muse

aw thanks nora ;-D and welcome! It’s nice to have a new reader/commentor 😀

  • Laura

I can’t find it anywhere!!! And I’ve been looking – plus that Connamon Spice Gloss from Loreal – can’t find that either!

I bet they’d look great together!

This color is the first Color Tattoo shadow I bought and I really love it. I’ve only worn it once and it will take a bit of practice to get it to apply how I usually like my shadows. I tend to like the inner corner of my eyes lighter than the rest, so I tried putting a bit of UD 24/7 Shadow Pencil in Sin over Mossy Green on that part of the lid. It didn’t quite look right, so I think I’ll try putting the 24/7 pencil on my lid before the Color Tattoo next time. That should work for now, at least until I maybe get another Color Tattoo in a lighter color to highlight with.

Gorgeous color! I love greens, and this shade is absolutely beautiful. Too bad about the blending issues, but still, I think I’m picking this up.

  • Marta

Lovely! And it does make your eyes pop. I love olive greens, even though my eyes are a brownish green and I’m not supoosed to wear a similar color… I have quite a collection lol I already have a dupe (or three), so I don’t think I’ll buy it. I was going to Ebay it anyway, as this LE is not available here. But it looks really good! Why LE Maybelline? Why?!

    • the Muse

marta, heck! I know what you mean they always recommend everything BUT green for my brown eyes but green rocks! ugh I am asking the same thing WHY indeed!

      • Marta

I heard green it’s ok with brown eyes, but not green with green eyes. I don’t know anymore. Lol.
“Hey, what LE should we run for fall this year”
“Oh man, I don’t know. We have all the basics covered: bright matte orange, black, gold, silver with lots of fallout. Maybe this BUNCH OF AWESOME SUPER WEARABLE NEUTRALS some idiot in the lab formulated”
“Oh, cool, they’re kind of brownish autumny looking. Brown, green… Surely they would only use those colors for fall”.
Seriously Maybelline, you’re killing me .

  • Audrey

Yay, my first comment! I’m actually wearing the Color Tattoo in “Tenacious Teal” today. It was somewhat of a risky purchase for me as I’ve only stuck with browns, champagnes, and creams ’till now. I LOVE these little pots! So surprised by how awesome the teal looks with my brown eyes. Can’t wait to pick up the Mossy Green, too!

    • the Muse

hi audrey welcome and thanks for commenting ;-D yay! happy to hear it! that teal is gorgeous!!!!!!!!!! I absolutely love aquas/teals with brown eyes, def gives pop! You must must get mossy green ;D

  • blueraccoon

This looks gorgeous on you Muse! I haven’t seen it around in my local Walgreens but I’ll try Target and Fred Meyer this week to see if I can find it. I picked up Barely Beige and Gold Shimmer, but not this one, and now I wish I had 🙂

    • the Muse

hey blue you got the best one, gold shimmer=AMAZING ;-D but mossy green is almost as nice! good luck finding my dear!

  • OrangeLipstickBlog

This is absolutely gorgeous on you! I have this and love it! I have green eyes but I still really enjoy green shadows!

  • Lilo

Has anyone seen it in LA recently? I’ve looked at 2 Ulta stores and a Target with no luck. 🙁

  • Becca @ The Beauty Sample

I love this one. It’s the only LE shade I’ve been able to find though–so annoying! I’m desperate to have the beige and mahogany ones!

  • Abs

I bought my first color tattoo while on a visit back to the states last month, and I was shocked to find it creased! After all of the amazing reviews online… Maybe I’m doing something wrong. Any application tips?

  • TK

Yeah I have this shade and I love it. But I do admit that I have had some difficulty working with it too. But I like the color enough that it really doesn’t matter.

  • K. Janine

I love this shade. it goes on smoothly and i, luckily, have not had any application issues. It’s a pretty, pigment shade. I sometimes used MAC’s Sumputous Olive over it and that it gorgeous as well. It’s a shame this is LE. I may get a backup.

  • Christine

Muse this really looks gorgeous on you… Also (this is weird) but your eyelashes also look really good! New mascara? Old favorite? Whatever it is, it’s working for you.

  • Jaz

I havent bought the new ones yet. I am still looking for the neutral colors. I JUST found the brighter set in a walgreens near me like 2 weeks ago. I dont have a green this color , I think I need LOL

  • AmyO.

Really looks good on you! I have brown eyes. Kinda been scared to try an olive green, but I want to try this. I was wondering though, what do you use to line your waterline? I hope it’s a drugstore brand lol I can never get anything to stay on mine D: It always fades & ends up under my lashline.

  • Tiffany Martin

Wow, you’re right, this looks so great with your eye color! Very pretty.

  • Mandi

I havea been looking everywhere for this green color and it is nowhere to be found! I <3 it but I have looked at wal-mart,walgreens and target. Any more suggestions?

    • the Muse

i got it at harmons mandi if you don’t have a harmons try bed, bath, and beyond 🙂 if not ebay might be the last choice 🙁

  • Melissa

I 100% agree with your review on this one. I like it as a liner with a thick line or rubbed on with my finger, everything else came out patchy.

  • Shelby

You.. look…STUNNING. Your eyes are.. GORGEOUS! I’m so sad it was limited edition. ): I’ve seen them sold online, so I guess I’ll buy one off the internet. *Sigh..
