Covergirl Clump Crusher by Lashblast Mascara Review

Covergirl Clump Crusher Mascara is a new volumizing mascara that offers a clump free finish. I’m not sure I really have issues with clumps…don’t get me wrong there are mascaras that clump occasionally but I blame the formula or applicator not necessarily my lashes. That’s not to say that clumping isn’t an issue some folks experience, in that case you might be seeking out a formula that will offer you a clump free finish.

On top of not having issues with clumps I wasn’t terribly excited to try Covergirl Clump Crusher Mascara. I have not come across a single mascara from the Lashblast Collection that I actually like. For all the marketing and all the bells and whistles that comes along with their massive applicators I typically end up with a more natural fringe of lashes after use. You’d think all that fanfare would give me some drama but sadly, the finish from a Lashblast Masara is typically mediocre and just falls flat of what one would expect especially because most come with those HUGE club style applicators that look like they could do some major damage.

Perhaps Clump Crushed by Lashblast will change my mind?

I hate to go into a review knowing I’ll dislike a product but that’s basically what happened with Clump Crusher Mascara. I knew I was going to hate it but I ended up purchasing it anyway. I guess some part of me was wishing that this would be the one Lashblast product that would work.

No…

Didn’t happen.

According to Covergirl you can apply up to 30 strokes (the equivalent of three coats, not sure what math they are doing but ok) without the mascara clumping.

Clump Crusher comes with a plastic curved brush applicator that has bristles which are positioned super close together. This is part of the reason the formula resists clumping. Actually swiping on layer after layer after layer won’t result in clumping, I tried it. So if you’re a builder when it comes to mascara have no fear this won’t create a mess.

I personally didn’t like the drier formula and with added layers it begins to feel a bit crunchy however, it does keep lashes remaining very light and natural looking, the finish is almost fluttery and whisper-like. I don’t think it’ll win any major awards for volume but it does lend some length.

Although dry the formula doesn’t come across gooey and the perfect amount comes out of the tube onto the applicator which also aids in keeping clumps at bay.

Overall, I thought the whole experience with Clump Crusher was uneventful. I personally don’t like a more natural lash look. I look for the drama when it comes to mascara and like with most Lashblast products this failed to give me that drama. If you have shorter, stubbier lashes I imagine you’ll see better results. If you like a more natural lash look you might like this but if you want something bolder I’d skip it.

You’re going to run across a slew of raves on this one so I imagine it’ll be something you might have to test out for yourself to see if it’ll be a yay or a nay for you. Personally, I’d recommend skipping it as I really didn’t love the results…!

I look forward to hearing your experience with it.

Feel free to share!

I purchased this item.

A few years ago, I had a tube of the original LashBlast and thought it gave me amazingly dramatic lashes. I tried other brands for a while and forgot about the magical LB. I decided to try it again a few weeks ago and….nothing. My lashes didn’t have amazing volume and the drama just wasn’t there. I can’t decide if the formula changed or if I just found other mascaras that are so much better for me. I’ll finish the tube I have, but then it’ll be back to my trusted Revlon Grow Luscious!

    Have a great weekend!

    • the Muse

alexis you might have been a bit conditioned to think it did something ;-D I know I’m sometimes like that. I watch videos/hear raves and suddenly I really feel like a product is doing amazing things, try it a few weeks or even a year down the road and proceed to ask myself what the hell was I thinking? ;-D

      • Alexis

Sounds right to me! I also not ashamed that I was a big fan of it in part because of my love for “America’s Next Top Model”. I only got into makeup about 3-4 years ago, so I was a total sucker for all the hype and ads until I got into a groove and figured out what works for me. Can’t lie, though..the hype still gets to me sometimes!

        • the Muse

it always gets me too alexis I’ll never learn my lesson lol! they do such incredible marketing you def get sucked in sometimes ;D

  • Amber

I have this mascara and I have to admit I only like it as a layering mascara. I usually use around three to four different mascaras at one time to get my desired huge “pow” lashes and this is a nice last step to span them out and take out any large clumps. but alone it is just blah. Great review 🙂

    • the Muse

that’s what I’ve been doing amber, it works a bit better when I can layer with it but that kinda defeats the purpose of the formula ;-D thanks! glad you liked!

    • K.B.

Can I be nosy and ask what mascaras you use? I am all about “pow” eyelashes!

      • Barbara

I’m not the OP, but Diorshow, Clinique High Impact, and Benefit They’re Real are the ones that really stand out as dramatic on my eyes. I have yet to find a drugstore mascara I liked, sadly, so if you’re looking for something low-cost, I’m afraid I’m of no help.

  • Kristina

I think I’ll be skipping it. I admit, the reviews have me intrigued. But I already have long lashes and just want VOLUME. I want those va-va-voom lashes! I have heard that it’s super easy to remove at the end of the day though, which is a nice plus.

    • the Muse

hey kristina I’d say def easy to remove…! I read some really huge raves but I honestly didn’t experience the va-va-voom you’re looking for ;-D

  • Caroline

This seems a lot like Maybelline’s One By One to me. I often go for more natural mascaras as I wear glasses so anything too lengthening is bothersome with my lashes hitting my lenses. I use One by One a lot. if I go for more dramatic lashes, I tend to use falsies, easier to keep them from hitting my lenses believe it or not.

    • the Muse

caroline it might be for you! It produces very natural lashes, not a ton of fanfare here. You might like it and find it less frustrating to wear with glasses!

  • Michelle

Argh…. drugstore mascara, so very frustrating. Just bought a tube of this stuff (L’Oreal Volumnizing) to replace my more expensive stuff (Smashbox). I wanted something to build more volume, but I made a poor choice. The cheapy stuff clumps like nobodies business. I have to take an extra mascara wand and go thru my lashes a million times to get all the nasty clumpy stuff off. Ok, not a million, but you know what I mean 🙂 Not cool. Still searching for the HG mascara.

    • the Muse

really? I actually didn’t have the problem with clumping michelle but def was uneventful all around in regards to the volume they promise. Just seems like a really basic mascara without many bells and whistles :-/

      • Michelle

Perhaps I purchased an old bottle – the formula does seem a little “fluffy”, at least compared to my old brand; or maybe thats just my imagination. Or, I could just have crappy lashes that clump easily…who knows.

Have you tried Tarina Tarantino mascara? Just purchases some, but haven’t tried it yet.

        • the Muse

i have michelle, did a review a few months ago, check the archives ;-D this def disappointed me a bit 🙁 but most lashblast products do!

  • K.B.

I’m sticking my fingers in my ears and saying “LA LA LA I CAN’T HEAR YOU!!” I need to get my butt to a drugstore because I have a long list of products that I want to check out.

Now that I made a comment relevant to this post (lol), I’m going OT to tell you that I’m a little less than 100 pages (Nook screens? I never know how to describe it lol) into “Leave Me Breathless” and I’m SO INTO Ghost and Macy! I’m kind of over Candace because Cherrie Lynn turned her into a typical girl-in-a-relationship. Gross. This book is driving home how fickle I really am because just a week or two ago, I was re-reading “Rock Me” for the billionth time and sighing over Brian. lol

    I’m so ashamed.

    • the Muse

LOL KB ;-D *shouts louder so you can hear*

I’m half way through (I know what you mean with the pages on Nook and Kindle, WTF?!) and absolutely love Ghost and Macy. Although Macy can be a little frustrating sometimes and well, so can Ghost. Make your mind people, are you or aren’t you in a relationship? But they are HOT together ;-D! Macy’s a little bolder than I originally imagined. She seems kinda uptight and shy-ish in Rock Me…? or am I wrong? In this book she seems kick ass. yes yes yes yes that’s exactly what happened to Candace. I just wanted to erase the scenes with her and Brian from my head, it was making me gag….! I thought that she’d mature them a little but still allow them to be the same…I also thought she’d announce some sort of engagement with them but I guess that would be too rushed? Kinda sad they never got a happy ending yet…Cherrie is doing another Ross book so maybe we’ll see them finally settling down in that.

I also don’t love how much Candace has changed. Nipple piercing? VERY out of character…! Now it just feels like she’s turning into her cousin, too much of a poser type thing…not doing it because she wants to just doing it because she’s in a relationship with a guy who does…yawn.

  • Caitlin

I love LashBlast Volume–for whatever reason, it just looks great on my lashes and wears well on me. So I am really excited to try Clump Crusher. But it’s nice to see your opinions aren’t swayed by the crowd, LOL!

    • the Muse

Caitlin I think if you like Lashblast you might fare well with Clump Crusher. I think you generally have to like Lashblast to get on with this one as it pretty much follows the same path of many of the lashblast mascaras so you might feel successful with it. I was just meh because most lashblast mascaras don’t work for me and this is no different :-/

  • Nikki

I actually LOVE this mascara!! It makes my lashes look fanned out and feathered just goregous!! And because of the light formula it actually holds a curl. The brush is fantastic at reaching every lash. It doesn’t flake or smudge on me either and it’s super easy to remove at the end of the day. It also feels very light on my lashes and not crunchy at all. I have tried almost every drugstore mascara and this by far out shines them all. Finally found my HG mascara!!

    • Stephanie

I agree with you Nikki!!!! This product worked wonders for me and I also have long lashes so maybe this product just works better for people with longer lashes. I always recommend this product to all of my friends when they ask why my lashes look so amazing and perfect 🙂

  • OrangeLipstickBlog

No offense, but it doesn’t even look like you have done anything different in the “after” picture! I know it must be a flop! What a bummer. I’m also a hater of the whole LashBlast thing. I haven’t found any that work for me.

    • the Muse

none taken and agreed, not a ton of difference :-/ that’s three coats btw! i am too, just doesn’t work for me, none of them :-/

      • OrangeLipstickBlog

Three coats?! Omg, what a bust. I can’t believe that’s three coats and it hardly looks like anything. Wow.

        • the Muse

i typically try not to over build when reviewing but a single coat really looked craptastic that’s why I built a few more on!

      • Nicki

I’m fortunate enough to have super long lashes. But with glasses? It’s more of a curse. I love LB and Buxom’s original mascara for a half a coat, just enough to blacken them and to hold my curl. But if I want something extreme, I’ll just stick some falsies on.

  • Christina

I can’t stand any of the LashBlash mascaras. Every couple of years I will purchase one because of all the hype and every time I am disappointed. So glad I read this before I could be fooled by all the upcoming raves! 🙂

  • Cindy

    This is pretty disappointing! LashBlast has been my go-to mascara for years. I tend to layer about 3 mascaras together, and Lashblast is my starting mascara. Even if I’m on the run and I only have time for a few coats I always grab LB. I was REALLY excited for this product, I was planning on hauling it during my trip to Ulta tomorrow! Boooo. D;

  • Becca @ The Beauty Sample

I’m curious about this one but I don’t HAVE to have it or anything. I do love the CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume though–it’s hands down my HG mascara. If they have a sale on this one I might try it

  • Rebecca

I seem to be the only person having formula issues with this mascara. Not only does it do NOTHING in terms of volume or length for me, after two coats I have little balls of the mascara (aka CLUMPS) at the base of my lashes. It also makes mine super crunchy and gross. I thought this might be my replacement for the vintage UD Big Fatty (my favorite mascara) but sadly I’d rather just go with bare lashes than this. So disappointed =(

    • the Muse

I didn’t experience that rebecca but def didn’t see much volume or length 🙁

  • Nonatut

I’m with ya Muse. I’ve never found a Covergirl mascara that I like. HOWEVER…I was very tempted to try this one based upon the “clump-crusher” promise. Glad I put it back when I did. Thanks for the heads up!

  • Laura

I think this would be good for my bottom lashes. They tend to get spidery really fast so I need a drier mascara for them and something fun for the top ones. I might try this.

  • Michelle D

I did not like this at all. While I’ve heard a lot of ladies say that it held a curl, for me, it did not. The curl didn’t even last an hour. Even with 2 or 3 coats I could hardly tell I had mascara on. I bought mine at CVS and promptly returned it.

  • Quinctia

I kind of like what it did for your lashes, if you were going for a light/no eye makeup look. And, even as a fan of brown/black mascara, I actually think that this formula would appear a little nicer in a straight-up black.

I’m beginning to think half my luck with Maybelline mascaras are due more to the giant brushes on the ones I’ve purchased, moreso than their formulas.

  • norcali

i loved reading this review, because it confirmed with me what i already knew, which is that i would not like it. the hype is so out of control (plus i like the green tube) that i actually cannot believe i was considering buying this! you just saved me money and time and whipped me back to reality!

you mentioned not having any success with covergirl mascara, and i thought i hadn’t either until i rememberd way back when they used to have one called professional, which i liked in high school. i don’t think they even make it anymore!

  • Jessica

Still gonna try this mascara, because I’ve always loved the original lashblast.
Question for all the ladies who layer mascara, how do you do that without getting giant, clumpy, spidery lashes? Is there a certain order I should put my mascara on? Do you start with a volumizing and then do a lengthening?

    • MarMarKitten

For llayering. Okay. I completey recommend using a big brushed wand. For my lashes it separates them and adds a bit of length. Then use a a smaller wand to add volume. I don’t recommend using more than two mascaras because they WILL clump and look very ewh. For my mascara regime: Start out with Mabelline’s XXL Curl Power. It’s a double sided tube. One is a white mascara that is amazing for separating and the other is the black that is amazing for the length and darkening. Then after I add a bajillion coats of that I add a couple coats of Clinique’s Lash Doubling Mascara. Adds volume AND a bit more length so my lashes just look to dieee for. And then if my lashes are a bit clumpy or I want the whole fanned out look I use Covergirl’s Lashblast Volume. (Orange little tube) I ran out of the mascara itself but the wand is perfect for seperating. After that, ta da! I’m done. It’s really not as hard as it sounds, just use whatever mascara seperates your lashes, and then whatever mascara gives you the whole volume. But always remember to use what works for YOU. Everyone is different, and what works for my lashes might not necessarily work for you. Best of luck!

  • Lisa

I’ve worn mascara for many years now and have never experienced SO MANY clumps as I have with this ‘clump crusher’ mascara!! Maybe it’s me, but I find this hands down the worst product I’ve used.

  • Stephanie

I came across this blog looking for photos to send to a friend because she wanted to know what I used that made my lashes so big and gorgeous! Im not sure why it didnt work out for you guys but it worked WONDERS for me! I love this product and its the only one I can use without it making them spread and look wired. It makes them thick almost look like glorious fake lashes without the glue lol! I wish I had before and after photos. Maybe its because my lashes are naturally long who knows but I just had to throw my two cents in.
Even after just one coat they are 3x more thick and beautiful than before so you guys shouldn’t have to put two or three coats on thats why its clumping up most likely.

  • Jamie

I appreciate that you keep your reviews so real and honest! Thank you! I love your blog 🙂
