MAC Grey Friday Lipstick Review & Swatches

The MAC Grey Friday Collection is a MAC Black Friday release that includes Grey Friday Lipstick and Grey Friday Nail Polish that will be available for a limited time.

I love the idea of a special, limited edition collection to celebrate Black Friday however, I’m unsure how many folks are going to be able to pull off Grey Friday Lipstick. It’s rather….unique!

Take a look!

MAC Grey Friday Lipstick will retail for $15 and be available along with Grey Friday Nail Polish Black Friday, November 23rd only at the MAC Times Square Store or online at www.maccosmetics.com

MAC describes this lipstick as a black grey with silver shimmer and a frost finish. They actually get the product description down very well this time as that’s about what you get. It’s more grey than black with plenty of silver shimmer. Although a frost finish it actually applies with a creamy, easy glide on my lips. I typically have issues with frosts applying dry and/or patchy. But this is creamy and wears very comfortable. And heck it even looks smooth on lips, you’d expect a shade like this to apply patchy and possibly look dry but I had no issues with it. I wouldn’t call it completely opaque but you can build it up to a full color finish.

Although a vampy, goth shade it’s actually easy enough to wear. Granted, I’m not brave enough to head out of the house quite yet with silverish grey lipstick on my lips but it doesn’t look entirely bad. If your lips are more pigmented it’ll come across considerably more berry which is a good thing in my opinion. My lips aren’t completely pale but they aren’t heavily pigmented either, I’m in between…so the shade comes across kinda plummy on me.

If you want to use it as a base of sorts over or under a festive red it actually makes such shades pop. This is particularly helpful if you find red a difficult color to pull off. Heck even a plum shade will go along very nicely with this.

Count me shocked as I find the color very versatile and a handy tool for using as a base or overcoat. I expected to hate this but I’m well on my way to actually embracing it.

I wouldn’t write it completely off, if you’re doing an order anyway from MAC on Black Friday I’d suggest popping it in your cart. I think you might be surprised with this one!

Will you be purchasing it?

What do you think of the shade?

Do share!

I purchased this item.

Hummmm, this reminds me of the color adjusters that MK had years ago. Looks like it would be great to have in your collection just for that and a wild look when you need it…lol 😀

I think this is pretty cool but don’t think I will be placing an order to get it. If it was going to be at counters I would probably snag one.

I’m passing on this – I recently purchased UD Oil Slick for $3 on their website. Same idea for 1/5th the price.

  • Cj

I for one am very disappointed you didn’t include a picture of you wearing it. 😛

    • the Muse

I’m working up my nerve ;-D perhaps an FOTD will come your way hubby dear ;D!

      • BLee

Ya, do it with a nude or pale pink l/s with the before and after…pruddy please 😀 😀

      • Melissa

In other reviews, it looks more gun-metally on since its sheerer than it appears. I think you could vamp it up 🙂

        • the Muse

it def has eleents of gunmetal grey…! it can be built up fully and depending on your lips it’ll keep that frosty silver or it’ll turn sort of plummy or berryish!

  • Lauren

I saw lip swatches of this on Temptalia’s blog, and it looks completely different on the lips than it does in the tube or on the arm. It’s a deep, vampy, blackened berry/plum color, and looks surprisingly wearable (and Christine from Temptalia has rather unpigmented lips where you would think it would show up as the grey-black it is). I wouldn’t be able to pull it off, since I’m really fair-skinned, but a lot of people could, especially if you were going for a vampy look.

  • Melody

What a strange idea! But I admit I’m so curious! I love frosts! This year I’ve been trying vampy shades, especially UD and Illumasqua. And, like you said, most turn to the berry side on me! But I think I must go for this as I get a vampy shade with frost finish! I’m just too curious for my own good 😉
And I agree with CJ. A photo swatch of you wearing it is most def in order!

  • Tiffany Martin

The key with black lipsticks is lining your lips! Black eyeliner works well, and after wearing goth styles for like a decade now I’d love to see a high quality black lipstick (many are patchy or drying).

Like CJ I’m sad you didn’t include a pic (; crossing my fingers for that one!

  • Icequeen81

I do agree is a versatile shade, I saw it om temptalia is just an amazing shade

  • Lorraine ER

Darn, I was hoping you would hate it and I could beg you to send it to me for my birthday! hehe

I thought this was a weird color at first & I’m a fan of non-traditional lip colors to go with my gothy-punky getups but this is actually something you could wear daily, the way it translates in almost the way Clinique black honey does, once on lips.

  • Joanna

I am not impress with it for the lip 🙁 but reading the comments made me rethink about it. Very versatile indeed Muse

    • the Muse

joanna wasn’t sure about this but don’t right it off, very interesting shade!

  • Angela Hall

Estee Lauder does a very similar color. I’d wear it. I also think it will be good to tone down other colors that are too bright or to make them more wintery.

  • April D.

I totally agree with some of the others, I would really have liked a picture of you “modeling” it for us Muse…I’m really curious as to what it looks like on. Also wondering how it compares to Rimmel’s Kate Moss #15 which was released back this past summer. Is it similar or close to that same color?

    • the Muse

hi april it’s nothing like the kate moss version, this is a deeper gunmetal gray with a ton of pigment where as km’s version was quite sheer. hope this helps!

  • Felis

I wanted it SO BAD. I have a thing for grey lipstick and gloss. Sadly, I missed out and now I’ll have to make do with UD Oil Slick. Poo! Angst!

  • Angel

I bought two! One for me, one for a gift. This will work well to darken up other lippies, so excited for this!
