Physicians Formula Organic Wear Fake Out Mascara Review

As you know from my recent post Physicians Formula released a new Organic Wear Fake Out Mascara for Spring 2013. This promises a false lash-like effect with added volume, length, and curl.

Along with all the bells and whistles you could possibly want from a mascara they also give it a 24 hour wear formula. This is also 100% natural origin and 70% organic with a formula free of harsh chemicals, parabens, etc…

Is it great?

Naa…not really.

Physicians Formula Organic Wear Fake Out Mascara is one of those mascara that you wish would work better than it does.

The market it as a 24 hours wear mascara that won’t smudge, flake, or clump. That’s a big claim. On top of this it not only volumizes but curls, and adds length.

Well, fact is, it’s not TO do bad a performing mascara but there are a few quirks.

This comes with a Lashblast-like applicator. You know, those rather big plastic club style applicators with smaller spikes that allow the mascara to comb through lashes easily. I have to admit I’m not always comfortable with applicators like this as I’m scared I’ll poke an eye with them. Thankfully I didn’t have to many issues coming through my lashes.

It lacks any real curl benefits but it makes up for that in the nice length it gives to my lashes as well as the volume it adds. I was actually impressed how long and full it made my lashes. It curls under the lash line and pulls them up and out creating a fuller effect with the addition of some extra length. Although I must warn you, if you have shorter, stubbier lashes you might find it applies very goopey. I had my own issues with it clumping up and looking rather smudged out and well, just plain awful (see my pics below).

My first several uses with the mascara produced nice volume and length but along with those benefits I ended up with a few clumps. To avoid this just make sure there isn’t a ton of mascara on the applicator also curling lashes prior aids the brush to stroke through lashes without clumping product up. The texture of the mascara does dry down a little stiff especially if you build up a few layers.

As for the 24 hour wear….mmm…probably not happening. I didn’t have smudging issues on my drier eyes nor did it flake but I suspect oily lids might experience some smudging. It’s just that kinda of formula…!

Overall, Physicians Formula Organic Wear Fake Out Mascara performs quite well if you take enough time and attention to apply it. Don’t expect perfection first swipe, there seems to be a slight learning curve to avoid clumps! It’s so rare that I run across a mascara that actually delivers both volume and length I’m willing to overlook some of the other problems. It’s not going to win any awards for best mascara of the year but it isn’t the worst either.

Might be worth a check out if it is on sale. I paid $8.79 for it at Bed, Bath, and Beyond.

I tried the green one and it’s so meh. It barely does anything for my lashes plus it flakes :/

Don’t like it. I’m pretty active, so I usually only wear w/p mascara. However, the claim of 24 hour wear intrigued me. It did clump on me, but when I tried to comb out the clumps, it flaked like crazy. It also did not hold a curl, and then clumped when I recurled my lashes later in the day-and a lot of the mascara came off on the curler. I’m going to try to use up the tube, but I definitely will not repurchase.

I’m not blown away by the result, but I have to admit that the packaging alone makes this one very appealing mascara… 🙂

I’ll probably still try this, it does look thicker on your after photo (yay), and I apply it in a way that makes my lashes ridiculous so it might still work on me.

FYI, I’ve poked myself in the eye both with the molded plastic brushes a la LashBlast and the traditional nylon bristly things. The bristly ones hurt a lot more.

Hmm, not sure if I want to try this or not. I like the regular black tube one but I’m not a huge fan of the brush and this looks similar. I like that its organic though because most mascara bother my eyes, how I found the black tube one in the first place.

I just tried this mascara last night after picking it up at CVS. I was already wearing Cover Girl Lash Blast Clump Crusher (which combs and defines nicely), and after adding this my lashes looked enormous and fake. The Ultra Black is a rich black. Today I tried it alone, and much to my disappointment, my lashes didn’t look long, defined, and ultra black. They look clumpy and heavy, like they’re weighed down. I will wear this over a definition mascara because it works best this way. But if you’re looking for a one-stop mascara, this one is not it.

Just an FYI, Physicians Formula is offering a: free after mail-in rebate. It’s on their website. 🙂

i didn’t like it cause even though i don’t have sensitive eyes, when i got a bit teary it stung my eyes.

I’m going to get this mascara anyway. I love how green it is (environmentally) and that I don’t have to put chemicals so near my eyes. I really hope that this mascara doesn’t go out of the market. Also I think that many people fail to realize that many of physicians formula product’s main focus isn’t on being fabulous cosmetics, it’s about making cosmetics that are good for you and the planet. It’s one of the only green cosmetic companies that I can afford. So when judging this mascara don’t judge it against harsh chemical mascaras like Maybelline cause they really aren’t on the same page.

I have been using it for sometime now, it smuges below my eyes within an half hour everytime. Stings my eyes also. The packaging looks cool but doesn’t fit in any makeup trays. PFM original was the only one that didn’t bother my eyes. So I will go back to the original.
