Stila Written in the Stars Eye Shadow Palette Review

This was provided to me by a brand for review but all opinions expressed are my own

Stila Written in the Stars Eye Shadow Palette is the smaller of two kaleidoscope style palettes that Stila introduced for Holiday 2012. I gotta admit I’m a sucker for this palettes since Stila started introducing them the past two years during the Holidays.

I’ve had my ups and downs with the palettes but I’m such a mush that every time they release a new one I’m on instant haul alert and can’t help but think to myself “Ooooo i need that!” Typical beauty junkie syndrome.

This is a limited edition palette that features 12 shades of eyeshadow housed in a cute star shaped compact.

Take a look!

Unlike the larger Snow Angel Palette this focuses on eyes only and is also considerably smaller in size which makes it easier to travel with and store. It’s a little smaller than a music cd.

Right now you can get the palette for $16 and Free Shipping using promo code EMPLOYEELOVE. At $20 or even $16 it’s not too bad but the shadow formula does need a little work. So perhaps $12-$15 would be even better for the price tag.

I didn’t technically swatch this palette because it’s very difficult to get into the smaller wells that hold each shade of shadow. This makes it challenging to even apply the eyeshadows as you’re struggling with getting your brush into each shade. I use a sponge applicator and swipe it up and down a few times and this seems to yield the best color pay off.

Unlike years past I think Written in the Stars isn’t as good a palette. I’ve always generally liked these Holiday Palettes but they do get repetitive however, they did have a far superior quality compared to this compact in terms of pigmentation. However, they do market this for a more nude, natural look and indeed both the shade selection and the shadow formula gives more of a subtle finish.

You should be ok if you don’t mind the lack of pigment as the shades are soft, easy to blend, and wear well enough. I’m a bit disappointed in the pigmentation but they build easily enough. I think the shade selection lacks imagination as many of the colors do look similiar once applied. You do have to remember these are a step far down from Stila’s original eyeshadow line so if this is your first Stila purchase don’t judge their shadows on this alone. And if you already know and love Stila Eyeshadow you might be a little disappointed at the quality.

Overall, Stila Written in the Stars Eye Shadow Palette is a cute little palette and would make an excellent stocking stuffer but at a price far cheaper than the current one. I think $12 or even $9.99 would make it far more appealing a purchase with this quality behind it. It’s not bad by any means but it has quirks in regards to application issues (small wells) and the formula is far from great. But I won’t deny when I’m not feeling the need to go all out with my eye looks I don’t mind this little palette in the least.

I bought their holiday palette last year and I actually really liked it even though it didn’t get the greatest reviews. This colors in this palette look kinda blah though. Thanks for the review. 🙂

my pleasure melissa! I have last year’s too and the year before I kinda dig them too…! I keep migrating towards these every single time they release them ;D

At first I thought: “yawn, what a bunch of boring shades”, but after taking a closer look at it I actually really like it.

i bought three of these for my baby glam friends. too many bright colors and sparkles would turn them off. my baby glam friends will love these. but as a deluxe glam girl, kinda blah. give me some pow with my neutrals!

I bought the big one with the blushes for my teenage daughter who is into more neutral shades at the moment. Also, she’s just starting to get into blush but she likes soft m/u so this seemed like a good fit.

susan I think that’s a great fit for a younger girl! It has some very pretty soft colors ;-D and the palette is so cute too!

I like the looks of this one. Last years looks was to chopped up for me. I really like the fuller size shadows with a neutral tone to them. Very pretty!

The teeny wells would bother me! Plus, I like my shadows pretty pigmented so I think I’ll pass. Thanks for the super review!

I saw these at Ulta recently. And I agree that the colors are a little too muted for my taste. I do like Stila products usually so I was a little disappointed. But Muse I have to ask where you get your headbands? They are so pretty & the colors are fantastic.
