Maybelline Color Whisper Lipstick Review & Swatches

This was provided to me by a brand for review but all opinions expressed are my own

As you know Maybelline introduced Color Whisper Lipstick in twenty shades for Spring 2013. These will be appearing in drugstores in January. I haven’t personally found them in any drugstores yet so I suspect I’ll hit pay dirt after the New Year.

Considering Revlon Lip Butters and L’Oreal Caresse Sticks released sometime ago it was only a matter of time for Maybelline to answer with a lip butter, lightweight lipstick of their own.

Let’s take a look!

This is a hybrid formula so I have no real definition for it. It’s part balm, part full coverage lipstick, part glossy lip tint…it’s a little of everything really.

It offers an opaque, full coverage finish in all three shades I tried. Coverage rivals Revlon Lip Butters but formula is most like L’Oreal Caresse Sticks. The texture has a soft, smooth, easy to apply glide across lips. A single swipe provides full color coverage and a high sheen finish. Although Caresse Sticks offer excellent pigment as well I think perhaps Color Whisper has even better color pay off and intensity. The formula isn’t as glossy or shiny as Caresse Sticks but still manages to have a nice bit of sheen on lips so they look shiny. The formula is far more hydrating than both Revlon Lip Butters and Caresse Sticks. They seem to have a water based formula that feels almost wet on lips which results in a moisturizing experience through the wear. They aren’t as heavy as Revlon Lip Butters and remain lighter than Caresse Sticks by a little bit. I think if you disliked the wear on Revlon Lip Butters and felt they were a little too heavy and had a less than smooth finish you’ll love Color Whisper as they are light, smooth, and hydrating.

Berry Ready, Lust for Blush, Petal Rebel

I love how weightless the formula is here. It’ll be difficult deciding between Caresse Sticks and Maybelline Color Whisper Lipstick considering both formulas rival the other. Color Whisper has a very good wear even on chapped or cracked lips. I find they look smooth, even, and beautiful even on dry lips. Wear time varies from shade to shade but I got about three to four hours in before they lost some of their intensity. I did notice that the darker shade I tried stained my lips so well after the color wore away I still had a nice staining effect going on.

Overall, Maybelline Color Whisper’s formula is very exciting. I’m really loving that the US market has caught on to the Asian trend of weightless, shiny color lipsticks. It’s a popular product in Japan and Korea so it’s quite nice to see the many options we have to choose from lately with such a formula. I look forward to trying more shades in this line.

Oh my god I swear I scrolled back and forth looking for the names and I only saw them after I posted the comment. Great review, though! Thank you 🙂

      • the Muse

no prob 😀 if you roll over each lipstick it’ll show the shade in a text box ;D

    • the Muse

sara just roll over it with your mouse and a title tag will come up with the name for each shade 🙂

      • christi

Unfortunately I’m on my tablet so when I roll over the pic with my finger nothing happens lol. I’m glad u posted the names for us tablet users! I just picked up one of these today in A Plum Prospect and I’m lovin it!

        • the Muse

oh duh sorry christi I’ll start labeling for tablet users! 😀 so so glad you love these ;D

  • Sweta

oh my gawsh Muse..u look so lovely in these pics with these amazing lip products..loved these..do you know if they are already available?

    • the Muse

hi sweta mentioned in first paragraph about finding them hehe ;-D thanks so much! the shades aren’t really me tbh so looking forward to grabbing more natural/nudes ;-D

  • Jenny

I loved the L’oreal Caresse lippies, but the Maybelline ones sound even better for my chapped lips! Can’t wait to try them out 😀

  • Louise

Lust for Blush is so pretty! Wow, I need these like I need a hole in my head, but who cares? Thanks for the review!

  • Debster

Lust for Blush looks much better than I anticipated, love the finish. I dislike lip butters, but the one I bought (can’t think of the name atm) is like a super frosty satin, bleck!

  • nicole

I just saw these on an end cap at target last night. I hadn’t heard about them so I picked up one darker shade. Really pretty! I enjoy these types of lip products:

  • Julie

I found these in my local CVS yesterday. I picked up Berry Ready — it’s very pigmented, but because of how buttery the formula is, it was really prone to feathering. It might be necessary to wear a lip liner with it, which to me kind of defeats the point of lipsticks like this…

    • the Muse

no kid…? I didn’t have an issue thankfully Julie and lipstick is known to migrate around my entire face sometimes ;-D

    • the Muse

they really have excellent color pay off and just the right amount of shine!

  • tiffany

they have arrived at fred meyers in corvallis, oregon!!! So excited to purchase after reading this review 🙂

  • Kiss & Make-up

While this looks like a great lipstick with great color pay off and a nice texture, I don’t think either of these colors would suit me.

  • Nikki

Can’t wait to see these in stores!! Berry ready is my kind of shade! It looks so pretty on you.

  • Tiffany Martin

Muse, I’m also glad that western brands are coming out with formulas similar to asian makeup, it’s much easier to just go to the store and pick up rather than wait for weeks for delivery (cheaper too) ^_^

I just started wearing revlon lip butters and they’re so good!! I got tutti frutti (I’m really into the tangerine girl look) which I think I’m going to wear out fast, I almost can’t NOT have it on my lips. Now I am really looking forward to these color whispers.

    • the Muse

agreed! ;-D I love love the revlon lip butters so glad you like these too! ;-D

  • Ally

These look really interesting! Nothing will ever replace my beloved Revlon Raspberry Pie lip butter, but I definitely want to give these a try :3

  • Cynthia Ramirez

These look so yummy, I want to run and find these! Berry Ready looks so so purdy on you Muse!

  • TK

Moisturizing and weightless? I’m there! Those colors look amazing too! I’ll have to find some soon!

  • Kim

Can’t wait to try these. I haven’t seen these yet but I’ve all the other CG and Maybelline spring 2013 items you’ve been blogging about.

  • Ella

Berry ready looks so gorgeous on you! I would love to get it, even though I’m sure I have a lip color that would look like this with a clear gloss…Glad to see your approval on this product, so I’ll have to pick it up!

    • the Muse

nothing like ’em lemony…clinique’s almost lipstick has a certain balmy texture and maybelline’s color whisper lacks that balminess, they feel more like a tinted shiny lip treatment with a ton of pigment.

  • blueraccoon

Do these have any kind of scent or taste? I tried a Maybelline lip product once, the 10hr Super Stay Stain Gloss, and it smelled so vile I couldn’t scrub it off my lips fast enough. Kinda left me wary where these things are concerned.

  • Danii

Argh Maybelline, why?! Now I need them! And I’ll definitely recommend them my friend (she’s a newbie in makeup but nothing I help out with!) She loved Baby Lips so I think she’ll like these too. I certainly want them.

  • Christina

Saw these at CVS today, Muse, and picked up two lust for blush, thanks for your review, and pinup peach) with the buy one, get one 50% off sale. Also picked up the new Maybelline liquid liners (violet and a very purpley looking navy) you mentioned a few weeks ago.

    • the Muse

yay glad you located them and most important on sale! did you like them? hope so ;D

  • Christina

I probably won’t get a chance to try them today because I previously hauled two of the new CoverGirl Jumbo Gloss Balms and two of the new Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Sticks. Merry Christmas to me!

    • the Muse

can’t wait to try those neutrogenua color sticks, hearing great things ;-D hehe enjoy!!!!!!!

  • Christina

As it turns out, I chose colors way too light for me that barely show up. I’m going to return both and try two darker colors. Wish me luck!

    • the Muse

luck! the lighter shades I swatched here weren’t too great for me either Chrstina. too mod :-/ so def looking forward to getting my hands on some new darker shades

  • Anne

omg i can’t wait to try these! I myself am Korean, and I can’t bear wearing anything on my lips that feel the slightest bit heavy

Thanks Muse for the quick review! Berry ready is calling my name

  • dark nyx

Oh. my. god. I need Lust for Blush and Petal Rebel in my life. Now.

LoL, I’m such a sucker for those pinky-nudy kind of colours! Can’t wait until them come out!

  • Aditi

Oh my gosh, these look amazing! I have both the Lip Butter and the Caresse Sticks and love them, so definitely need to add these to my bag 🙂 Berry Ready is a gorgeous color, and I NEED it! It looks so fab on you, and I suspect it will look amazing on all skin tones!

  • Christina

So I returned the two lighter colors and exchanged them for Who Wore It Red-er and Orange Attitude. Red-er is opaque with one swipe, but it turns into a pink stain on me. Sigh. I was hoping for a red kind of like Revlon’s Lip Butter in Candy Apple. I’ll give Orange Attitude a chance later but I think I am done with these. BTW Muse, that Berry color looks amazing on you!

    • Yvonne

I really wanted to like these , but for me they didn’t wear we’ll at all and didn’t provide very much hydration . I got the Who Wore it Redder and it faded to a dark pink after a short time. I seem to be really ” rough ” on lipsticks , they don’t last very long on me and I don’t bite my lips . These lighter weight lipsticks are a great concept but unfortunately not for me.

  • Ariana

I saw these at my local walgreens today! I bought one in the color “Pin up peach”. Its a pretty peachy pink. I love it! Great review!

  • Francesca

They look lovely indeed! Love the packaging! I can’t wait for them to be out 🙂

  • Chrissy

I’ve seen these in some Walgreens in NYC for about a week. I picked up Cherry on Top, since I love a bold lip and it looked like one of the brightest…and of course, it’s amazing. I am a HUGE fan of Revlon’s Lip Butters and the Caresse Sticks and I think I prefer this formula to either of those! Heaven knows I need as much hydration on my lips in the winter as I can get – so glad I can finally get that with some great color, too!

    • the Muse

aw so glad to hear your success with these chrissy! which manhattan walgreens!? been to one so far but no luck!

  • Yamilet

I found these yesterday at CVS without even trying. I debated buying them at first but I had a 25% off coupon so I decided to go for it. I LOVE them! I got the shade Made-It Mauve which is a YLBB shade for me. I think I like these better than Revlon Lip Butter, L’Oreal Le Balm AND L’Oreal Color Caresse. You described them to the T 🙂

  • Ami S.

I picked up Lust for Blush and Rose of Attraction. Sadly, I dislike them both. The colors are pretty and there’s decent pigmentation, but the texture of these lippies is so thin and slippery! They enhance every bit of dry skin on my lips and do nothing to hydrate or condition. They are unscented too, which just makes them incredibly boring to me. Boo. The packaging is so pretty – I really wish the product itself was nicer.

  • chloeandjessica

petel rebel looks absolutely gorgeous i hope its pigmented enough to show up on my lips. Nice review 🙂

  • Jen_M_sunshine

Finally got my hands on these! I have been stalking several stores here in Chicago and no one in my area had them out yet! I got the berry one as well as mocha and mauve. The light ones def looked like they wouldn’t even show up on my pigmented lips. Also snagged a barely branded color tatoo and a cover girl lip crayon. Saw the neutrogena crayons too but waiting for reviews. Thanks for the review muse! Maybelline has put out some good lippies lately.

  • Nikki

These are amazing! I picked up berry ready and coral ambition and they are such pretty colors and the formula is outstanding. The colors are rich and feel so comfortable on the lips.

  • Lauren

I picked up Berry Ready tonight at Target, but I’m probably going to return it. I thought the display looked interesting, but it was completely misleading. It was advertising sheer color, so that was what I was expecting, but I definitely got a surprise when I put it on.

  • Hollie

I was so disappointed with these. The pigmentation was barely even there! Revlon lip butters are so much better in my opinion.

  • Melissa

I was so tempted to pick some of these up this morning at Walgreens, but I decided I wanted to wait until I see your review. Now I gotta go haul haha

  • Cleo

    Hi Muse!

Just started reading your site – love it!
So want these – the colours are just beautiful 😀

    Thanks for all the info!

    • the Muse

hi cleo 😀 thanks for stopping by! my pleasure! You’ll love the formula as well! it’s fab!

  • Rola

I am wearing Berry Ready today, the formula is wonderful. I really like it so far and may have to get more:)

  • Teresa

I just found these at the drug store today by fluke, I was planning on getting Revlon lip butters but the Lust for blushcolour drew me in, I have tanned skin and normally dont go for frosty pinks but I paired this on a whim with Annabelle lip liner in Terracota, colouring my lips with the pencil then finishing with the colour whisper looked utterly amazing and the richness of the whisper was an A+ surprise, I’ve now found a spring pink and this was well worth the buy

  • Nala

I love these lipsticks! Berry Ready looks amazing on you. My personal favorite is “Who Wore it Red-er”.

(Psst! Muse! Did you hear about the Disney x Sephora Princess Jasmine collection?)

    • the Muse

i did I did I did squeallllllllll! sounds amazing saw some pics ;-D Who Wore it Red-er is lovelys btw ;D

  • Sam

I reviewed these too and had a similar opinion! Though I didn’t think the wear time was very good.

  • DivaShop

Thanks for the swatches, berry ready looks GORGEOUS, I’ll have to try it! I already have lust for blush & I love it. My skin & lips tends to dry & I usually need some sort of lip balm or moisturizer prior to lipstick application, but I don’t even need it w/this it’s so hydrating. Just as you said, even on dry lips it looks “smooth, even, and beautiful”. 🙂

    • the Muse

my pleasure gloria 🙂 they really are an excellent lip product!

  • daniella

How do these compare to a higher end lip product?
    thanks!
    xx
