Basically My Sentiments on US BB Creams….

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. What’s worse is when they call it a bb cream tinted moisturizer lol

Ps: I hate car repair people right now. Mom went in for a $20 oil change, ended up paying close to $600 on needless “repairs” and 3 hours later the car breaks down!

    • the Muse

omg..that’s awful wtf!? seriously I think they take advantage of women drivers 🙁 LOL yes exactly WTH is a BB or a TM ?! it can’t be both!

      • Chynna

Yes! I always make sure I do a load of research before I go into any mechanic and tell them what I think might be wrong or what I want them to look at. And if they tell you that you need an expensive repair, especially when you didn’t have any idea there was something wrong, don’t be afraid to drive away and get a second opinion. I’ve found that the times I come in prepared and sounded like I knew what I was talking about, I didn’t get slapped with all kinds of additional thing. It’s when I go in unprepared in emergency that I’m vulnerable and can’t ask informed questions or push back well.

      • Cj

Did you see what tarte did? They renamed their tinted moisturizer into a “bb”‘tinted moisturizer. Which is funny because before it was a TM it was a foundation lol.

    • Alanna

ew, yeah. my dealership guy always found lots of “extras” that needed to be fixed (that I knew had no need of, I DO work on my own car thanks!) and would always call me “little lady” super condescendingly when I told him exactly what his shop had permission to work on. sexism is gross.

  • Misti K

I bought the Lumene BB Cream last night and yep….it’s got lots of great features and its very natural looking….but BB Cream, it is not. I’ll still use it. I like how it feels but I totally get what you meant when you said it’s the closest American version out there.

  • Alanna

even worse when I’m browsing in sephora and what do I hear? just an SA saying to another customer: “now this is a CREAM, it’s not meant to be like a FOUNDATION, it’s a BB CREAM so it’s meant to be a TINTED MOISTURIZER with a little SUN PROTECTION~~~!” muse I wanted to bust in there with everything you’ve taught me about bb creams! excuse me! SA’s spreading misinformation make me get all huffy! Had to pick up tocca and mascara for mum and wanted minimal drama so I didn’t have time to preach. 🙁

    • the Muse

lol alanna ;-D I think everyone is confused over what is a TM and what is a BB ;-D

  • Christy

    ROFL!!

1.Personally I don’t think anyone has truly explained to them what a tinted moisturizer is.

    2. I think “BB cream”sounds way better and is likely a better marketing name than “tinted moisturizer”. Esp when everyone knows you can tint your own moisturizer anyways.

  • LINDARRAGNAR

had to LOL at this, its sadly true. !!! I hate how they (U.S makeup companies) took a great concept and than twisted it into a sub par product, BB creams should cover and brighten the skin!!!!!!! Also the shade selections of the american ones SUCK!!!!!!!!!!

  • Grace

THAT MEME….PURE GENIUS! haha yes yes yes yes yes!! Tell it like it is, Muse!

  • M

AMEN! it downgrades on true BB creams from Asia – ones that actually deliver on more than just coverage.

  • 18thCenturyFox

That’s why I married a mechanic who knows plumbing with best friends that are electricians and carpenters – the only area of my life where I’m a successful tactician 😉

    • the Muse

LOL Nat! I dunno about that, true adventuring spirits need a BB Cream to keep them looking flawless through battles!

      • Nat

But they go to Rivendale for that – it’s why the elves all look so good! 😀

        • the Muse

lol ;-D ooo that’s the secret! all that lambas bread does a body good!

  • Natalie

ItA! There were no BB creams when I was a teenager, and yet, on a recent trip to Walmart, a young woman was telling her mother she was getting some, and I just thought “whatever.”

  • sataa

I totally agree with this I personally like the Garnier BB cream it suits my skin and gives me a nice dewy finish but I won’t call it a proper BB cream like my Missha or The Face Shop ones because they have high spf, whitening and anti aging properties and I think their coverage is better than the Garnier BB cream but nowadays almost EVERY WESTERN BRAND is jumping into the BB cream bandwagon and naming their tinted moisturizers as BB creams

  • Charlestongirl

Yep, it’s almost an expose. Marketing departments can take one product and turn it into an entirely new one with a name and some fresh text.

    • the Muse

basically covergirl appears to have renamed their tinted moisturizer to bb cream…

  • GinaDee

Can you please suggest some good BB Creams then? From the USA or elsewhere? I personally hate tinted moisturizers and stay away from them anyway. I’ve used Garnier & Physician’s Formula BB Creams and they are okay IMO. What else is out there that we are missing?

    • the Muse

ginadee just check my side bar there are TONS of reviews on Asian products/bb creams. See the archives under BRTC, Dr Jart, Skin79, Shills, etc…or see the BB Cream or BB Creams archives located on the right hand side of the site.

  • Iris

Totally. I’ve heard Asian BB creams are far different from the U.S./North American ones.

  • Susannah

I feel the muse has some stress over BB creams here. And i totally get it. I kinda feel that way about repromotes with new seasonal collections. It ain’t new and don’t try to show me old stuff in a “new light”! I love the dr jart bb creams. I am super fair and super pink toned and the coverage is amazing. I haven’t tried the new one in the jar. It looks too dark for moi.

    • the Muse

hey susannah! I’m gonna to review/swatch the new jart soon so hopefully swatches help you decide if it is or isn’t too light! LOL agreed!

  • SS

oh my gosh i love this!!! I havent been able to find a really good BB cream lately. Is there one you could reccommend to me that might be availible at drugstores, or sephora?

    • the Muse

dr jart at sephora is probably the best you’ll run across. Boscia did a good job with there bb cream as well but it is a tad sheer.

  • Irene

So true! I can’t understand why Western brands won’t make formulas like the original bb creams and instead just tinted moisturizers under a different name. Real bb creams are a life saver for me and I bet they’d be so for many other people who don’t know the Asian beauty market.

  • zang

i’m just going to stick with what i know and like and that’s ASIAN BB CREAMS!

btw, watched ALICE IN CHEONGDAM-DONG yet? if not, GET TO IT! I LOVE THIS KDRAMA!

    • the Muse

le sigh I love Moon Geun Young 😀 such a darling! 😀 I’m so behind on my kdramas lately haven’t had time to sit down and watch ;-D

  • Michelle

I’ve been a fan of the Missha BB cream for two years now, and am just starting to dive further into other asian options. I hope I have extravagant luck as I did with the first BB cream purchase. I stay away from the US “BB cream” since I’d be disappointed. Please review more asian skincare! I find them to be much better and suited to my skin type than those offered locally and I trust you <3

    • the Muse

aw thanks Michelle I have some new skincare goodies I’ll be reviewing this week! the new biore lotion=AMAZING!

      • Michelle

Oh rearyy now?! Do you have any recommendations for pale dull skin? Sitenote: I just ordered some Origins goodies. I fell in love with their vitazing moisturizer (YOU MUST TRYZ ^_^) but the color is a little dark for me, even though its sheer. It really does make your face glow though. Sigh.

  • Miss_Silk

    True Story lol

Man…What about the whole….”It’s not AA or BB, it’s CC” deal….I’m confused

  • Hannah

You know what’s worse… The Maybelline BB Cream was just released in Australia but it has no SPF! ? I mean, what’s the point then? And it costs $16. all you are paying for is an average moisturiser with a really sheer tint – definitely not a bb cream

  • Amy

lol. the interesting thing is that they didn’t even get the BB creams right and they are already moving on to CC creams. Jeez!

  • Bettie

    Hi Muse,

Please review the new Aveeno BB Cream! I saw it in my local drug store (Bartell’s in Seattle), next to the tinted moisturizer, so it looks like they’re not repackaging the same product with a new name.

  • jules

haha! this cracked me up! luckily my korean nail salon owners sell BB cream from korea that i can buy right there!
