Lumene Vitamin C+ Illuminating Anti-Age BB Cream Review & Swatches

Lumene Vitamin C+ Illuminating Anti-Age BB Cream is a multi-function BB Cream that recently launched at CVS. It has an SPF 20 with a formula that promises to brighten, hydrate, even out skin tone, and improves elasticity for a more youthful appearance.

Suitable for all skin types it comes in a light and medium shade selection.

I was quite excited to give this a test run and eagerly purchased both shades to swatch.

Well done Lumene. It’s not quite the consistency of a BB Cream but overall, you’re doing it fairly right. I know I can’t get away from preaching what is and isn’t a good BB Cream, I’m sorry, but having tried so many Korean ones I do find the ones I’ve tried on the US Market a lacking.

Lumene actually created a product that’s as nice as a BB Cream but isn’t quite a BB Cream. Makes little sense I know but if you have experience with Asian BB Creams and tried out the Lumene BB I think you’ll know what I mean.

But…

Fact of the matter is it is a great product overall and well worth purchasing.

I’d say it’s a beefier tinted moisturizer or a BB Cream slash tinted moisturizer hybrid. I think the sun protection is sadly lacking but outside of that I can’t really rant anything else about it.

This has a gel-like consistency that has a creamy texture. It applies on skin smoothly and evenly leaving skin feeling soft and delicately hydrated. The dry has a soft, semi-matte finish that provides sheerer coverage that builds easily. It’s not terribly pigmented but it does ease redness, brightens skin, eases dullness, and will hide, conceal, and perfect very minor imperfections and issues so skin is left looking its very best. It has a weightless finish that wears for a good five to six hours on a cooler day (not sure how well it’ll hold up during a hot day as of yet).

They did a rather great job with this. It pretty much covers all that I want from a good BB Cream. Excellent texture, easy to apply, brightens (very important for me), conceals minor problems while perfecting and creating a solid canvas for makeup application, and wears fairly long. I can’t say it didn’t do any one thing well!

A little more sun protection and perhaps more pigmentation and you could dub it an official BB Cream.

Likey this.

Well worth checking out and Muse Approved.

I located it at CVS. The price seems to vary from location to location but for the most part it seems $14.99-$16.99 is where it sticks. The best part is CVS always has fairly nice sales on Lumene so you can grab it on sale at some point I’m sure.

Try it!

I think you’ll like it.

Do share if you already have!

I purchased this item.

I saw this at Walgreens a few weeks ago and I almost purchased it, but refrained because I wanted your opinion. Now I can go test it out with more confidence.

      • amy

Me too, LOL! That, and I wasn’t sure how “light” Light was… Alas, I think it’s a wee bit too dark, although a nice, neutral beige tone is always a good thing. I wonder if I mixed in a bit of pale foundation…?

  • Tammie

Do you think that the lighter one will work on transparent NC15s such as myself?

  • Caitlin

If octinoxate is really the only sunscreen ingredient in that, then it is offering totally inadequate sun protection. Octinoxate does virtually nothing to block UVA rays, only UVB. Without avobenzone, metal oxides, or one of the newer UVA-blocking agents, you are basically only being protected from burns, and not from age spots, wrinkles, or cancer. BOO. Badly done, Lumene. I don’t mind if products don’t have sunscreen, because I can always wear something else with it, but misleading people into thinking they are protected by a shoddy sunscreen is really unethical.

    • Robin

Titanium Dioxide is listed under the ingredients, not too far down, but no idea the percentage. Nevertheless, I like this product and use a moisturizer with sunblock underneath.

      • Abi

The inactive ingredients are listed in alphabetical order. I always prefer to see them listed in quantity order, as this makes it hard to say how much titanium dioxide there really is in there.

    • Rachael

Caitlin – you are absolutely right! I was going to comment the same thing. And, unless it’s listed as an active ingredient and not hidden down within the other ingredients, there is not enough titanium oxide to do anything.

    • Kyra

Thank you! This is the first thing that caught my mind. I really hate an unreliable sun protection! I won’t try this product.

  • marisol

Would you describe the color to be on the pink side? Im very yellow and pale

  • Kasey

Would the light shade be ok for light neutral skin tones? (I’m new to wearing any type of face products)

  • Winni

I bought both shades last week as they were bogo free at Walgreens! I really like it. I’m a little darker than you right now, between nc25-30. I find the shade 2 a little dark and shade 1 way too pink and light……I mix 1/3 1 and 2/3 shade 2 and I get a great match. Love it so far! <3

    • the Muse

hmmm! I may mix in the Summer! I easily tan no matter how much I stay out of the sun so mixing would be great for the summer weather ;D

  • blueraccoon

Way too dark for me, dangnabbit. I was really looking forward to this one, too! *sulks*

  • anna

Just bought this a few days ago and so far I like it very much. Thanks for posting the medium shade swatch. Right now I can wear the light but in the summer months may have to pick up the medium or mix the two of them.

  • Kim

I purchased both shades of this myself during the Bogo at Walgreens last week. I love this stuff! It smells good. covers well, goes on smooth, and lasts. But I do find the shade 1 is too light and shade 2 is too dark/yellow so I have to mix them together to get a good shade for my skin tone.

  • Elli

I’m from Finland, and had no idea they sold this brand in the States too. 😀 This brand is pretty much a staple for Finnish women to use, but it’s strange how they no longer make truly pale enough shades. Maybe they revamped the shades for more of a international appeal, but seriously there are pale and fair women all over Europe and States too… and at the same time the original clientele of Skandinavians can no longer wear those foundations either!

  • Heather C.

Can you tell me the name of the best Asian BB cream out there and what website I can get it from? Thanks. I’ve read your reviews on BB creams but can’t pinpoint the #1 brand. I have super fair skin. Thanks.

    • Tiffany Martin

I’m not the Muse but I do a lot of BB cream and I can tell you right now that’s not how it works! There’s not really a “Best brand” everyone should buy, or a “Best product”.

      Two major reasons:

      1. Did you notice most Asian BBs are one shade? (Though some brands like Etude house and Missha produce a few or several shades of some products, it’s still limited). What matches one person won’t necessarily match the next.

      2. Everyone wants something different! If you want the most sunscreen, and I want something that won’t look oily you’re going to like different products. I can recommend you my favorite things all day long and you’d hate them all.

The good news is trying BBs is easier because a lot of sellers throw samples in. Another good idea there!

Maybe you have a friend who owns a few BB’s you can try out?? I hope you find what you’re looking for ^_^

  • Melissa

Hmm, wonder how close the light is to an NC20? Colorstay Buff is pretty much my skintone.

  • Abi

Yay! I’m so glad you liked this. I’ve been using it almost every day for the past three weeks, and I really dig it – even though there are some silicones in there, it feels much more water based, and plays well with my Lumene serum, and prescription skin goo. My skin is very oily, NC15, and I like to mix the Lumene BB with a tiny drop of Clinique acne treating concealer. The result is a creamy, pigmented, oil free BB cream that I like better than evem the best asian BB creams I’ve encountered so far. For dry skin, this mixes well with the Lumene serum and the L’Oreal Lume foundation.

  • Emi

So glad you reviewed this! I purchased it two weeks ago on a whim (after seeing your first post about it, actually), and I’ve really been liking it so far! My one complaint is that it’s not the best for oil control, but it really brightens my skin up well so it’s not a huge deal to me. On the second day I wore it, I put it on around 7:30am, and my skin looked awesome at 9pm (after work, riding my horse, and dinner out!). Very pleased with it so far! My favorite is still the Skin79 Hot Pink label, but it is nice to have this in rotation as well 😀

    • the Muse

agreed emi, def not great for oil control :-/ but aside from that was a win ;-D aw I am SO glad to hear it! Pink label is def way more pigmented so can understand your love there!

  • OrangeLipstickBlog

Quite tempted to pick this one up! I’m afraid it might break me out, though. BB creams seem to be the rare exception of something with oil that doesn’t break me out but the last foundation I tried with oil (a PF something…) broke me out within two hours of application. OUCH!

  • Jennifer

I really want to try this but i’m worried the light shade will be too dark. I’m NW15 (lighter than that really).

  • Miriam

I’ve been wanting a BB creme that I can readily buy here in the usa, and since you are experienced in how they should perform, I’ll keep coming back and checking your reviews for “THE ONE”. Everything seems to be like a tinted moisturizer that you’ve reviewed so far, hopefully one of the cosmetic companies will get it right.

    • the Muse

no “One” yet Mariam but I hope to find it one day hehehehe…this is NICE but not quite fully BB Cream potential ;D

  • Ali F

Being allergic to silicones (my skin breaks out immediately), are there any foundations/BB creams you can recommend that do not have silicones?
It’s been the bane of my makeup existence as I can only use mineral foundation. All the new products out there are loaded with silicones and I haven’t been able to partake 🙁

  • MJ

I agree, very nice stuff! The texture is great, coverage pretty good, and it leaves quite a nice finish. The color is a little light and pink for me, though, so I’ve found that adding a drop of the much yellower PF BB makes a nearly perfect shade. Thanks for the review Muse!

  • Alli

I bought this after reading your review ( along with Flower BB Cream and Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream) in shade 2/medium and I LOOOVE IT! Thank you for turning me on to this. I love the coverage, the brightening effect it has and the scent is lovely ( the olay fresh effects scent is too much for me and I’m not sensitive to fragrance). First, I apply this with my hands, then apply a bit more with my beloved Hourglass #2 foundation/blush brush. I set with a bit of powder on my oily areas on some days only because I have oily skin. However, I can go without the powder if I want. Thank you for this review – without it I’d not have known about this. Plus, I had extra bucks to use at CVS and this was the perfect way to use them. As always you are such a great help when it comes to deciding what to buy and what to skip.

    • the Muse

so so happy to hear it alli!!!!!!!!!!!! fantastic! I am very flattered to hear that and so pleased to here you enjoyed this ;D

I seen this BB Cream in an Ad in one of my magazines is Sub to at home. It was rated their #1 Best BB Cream hands down =) 2nd Place was give to Estee Lauder, 3rd Place (cheaper version) was given to Maybell. BB Cream. I seen the ad and went to CVS to try this out and I loved it !! Such a pretty finish and well worth the $14.99 ! I seen it on Amazon for alot more money too. Great stuff. (I had never even heard of this BB Cream before I see the ad in my home Magazine) Glad I found it because I love it so much!

  • Jenny

I love your reviews! I just picked this up today at Ulta and it’s on sale for about $11 – with a 20% coupon it was only $9ish. A great deal for a product that seems to do the trick! Thanks again for such thorough reviews – I check your site before making most of my beauty purchases 🙂

    • the Muse

aw so happpy to hear it jenny! great sale 😀 aw thank YOU VERY flattered!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hello, i usually go for a tinted light moisturizer. i really like tarte cosmetics, they use natural ingredients. i noticed that they changed the description of my fave, now calling it a bb creme.

problem is that it’s kind of expensive and they are always out of my shade. i have light skin with a pink undertone so i need a yellow base to even it out. i had read like the above poster that lumene was highly rated and i know they also use(or at least used to) natural ingredients. anyway, the store was out of light so i got the medium and i believe it will be too dark, however looking at your pics above it looks like the light has a pink element. i will try it anyway, i was just hoping that a drugstore brand would have a product that i would be happy with.

  • Nicole

I tried this today the light version and it seemed to be a bit too orange for me… I was curious if that’s how it starts out maybe it’s just to dark for me.

  • Melly

I may have to chek this out while I wait for my Korean haul 😉 just stopped by to see what get since what I usually use (mizon snail bb cream) I’m all out of! Now to pick a moisturizer…

  • vanilla

Hello Muse. I purchased this BB cream and loved the moisturizing texture, however I read on a different blog the oxidized vitC products is basically free radical added to your skin. Knowing that it contains vitC in this product and that it’s been at least 3 years that I had this bbcream, I’m pretty sure all the vitC has been oxidized. Do you know of a different bb cream that has the same moisturizing, balmy consistency without vitC? thanks a lot
