Maybelline Inked In Pink Color Tattoo Metal Eyeshadow Review & Swatches

Maybelline Inked in Pink Color Tattoo Metal Eyeshadow is one of five new shades of Maybelline 24H Color Tattoo Eyeshadow that the brand recently introduced for Spring 2013. These new shades are all metallic finishes thus the “metal” in the title.

I was quite excited about the shade Inked In Pink as I’m a lover of pinks plus it’s a different, unique shade that Maybelline hasn’t yet covered in this range.

Take a look!

I like to review each shade of Color Tattoo individually since I find the formula varies from shade to shade. Some are brilliant and others I find are misses due to patchy issues, dryness, or finish. It’s sort of a mixed road with hits and misses along it.

Inked in Pink is a baby pink with a tiny hint of mauve. It appears quite metallic in the jar however, as suspected, it went all kinds of frosty on my lids. Metallics sometimes do this for me. It does have a cakey, uneven texture and does need some TLC for application in my opinion. Too little and color barely shows up, too much and the shadow looks frosty and cakey.

It’s quite nicely pigmented but you do need a little building to get the best intensity. I do suggest a brush for application and fingers to pat and blend into place. Two layers should get the desired shade you see in the jar. The texture was creamy and it blended easily although I seemed to have an issue with blending the color away. Blame it on my heavier hands. Just use a little caution when applying and you should be ok.

Color wore well without fading or creasing throughout an entire work day.

It’s not really the best shade of Color Tattoo I’ve ever tried but it is a unique shade of pink well worth picking up. Some of the frost was disappointing to me but if you spend extra time and patience blending it out you shouldn’t have too many issues.

It’s available now along with five other shades at drugstores.

Tried it already?

Love it?

No?

I purchased this item.

Looks great on you. They are “metal” shades so I would have to expect the frost. I too was very happy to see this shade, I wear pinks/purples a lot since I have green eyes, and Pomegranate Punk was too dark sometimes.

I like the ELF “c” brush to apply these, it’s just the right mix of dense and fluffy, and the right shape to get into the corners and also blend out the crease. Plus it’s cheap so if it gets gunked up from the cream products it’s no big deal. For the record it’s the only thing I like that brush for, lol. I tap the ends of the bristles in then buff the color on, building in layers. I find it layers really well that way since you are only putting on a little at a time, without removing what is underneath.

I have also found that you can apply a satin or matte shadow on top to change the texture and cut down on the shimmer if you don’t like it. I use the CT’s for bases primarily and find that it really does not matter what finish I use, it’s the shadow on top that makes the difference. It also only takes a thin layer of CT to pop the shadow and make it last, and you won’t get nearly as much shimmer with a thin layer.

Thanks for the tip on the Elf “c” brush. I liked your descripton about only liking the brush for this specific application – I’ll have to check it out and see if any brushes in my already stash will compare. You gave a lot of nice tips.

It’s a really weird brush. It has a flattened ferrule (like a shader), but it’s fluffy (like a blender), and it’s really dense (like a smudger), and rather large for an eye brush. Almost like a mini version of a bronzer brush.. but with shorter bristles. They are only $3.

I got Barely Branded from this collection and was so excited because my Mac Barestudy paint pot creased on me. I tried this out today and I can’t believe people didn’t stop me the creasing was so bad. I’ve never had a product crease on me like that before and I am mega disappointed because all the reviews are amazing. I guess I will have to try a primer under and if that doesn’t work back to cvs it goes!

    • charlotte

Try the primer, and if that does not work tap a little milk of magnesia on your lids first.

I found these to crease as well (especially Tough As Taupe–gah!)–so I’ve developed my own application technique. First, I blot my eyelids with a blotting paper, then apply the Color Tattoo shadow, then finish with a bit of translucent/setting powder on a shadow brush. They stay put ALL. DAY. I found if I tried to apply over a primer they got patchy. Hope it helps!

  • SusanT

Wow, Muse, that pink looks so pretty on you, I just might have to get that one. I got the gold one and found the application difficult, too, but the color is certainly pretty. Let’s put it this way: application is difficult with these, but the colors are certainly worth it.

    • the Muse

susan some seem to apply better than others but this is one of the tricky ones and thank you! 😀 <3!

I just bought this last week and I love it! I put MAC Haux in the crease, and line with some plummy/fig colored Tarte chubby pencil and it’s the bomb! My new go to look. I use a primer first as my eyelids are crazy oily, and it stayed more metallic than frosty. I like it on you, it’s very sheer and pretty. I don’t think it looks as frosty on you as you think.

    • the Muse

aw thanks angel! I like the idea of haux in the crease, gonna try that!!!!!!!!!

  • deliah

I picked this up back when you first mentioned them, and I’m all kinds of in love with it. It’s a bit slick at first as my lids are almost-but-not-quite-oily, but dries down quickly and works perfectly as an eyeshadow base, and a barely-there bit of colour when worn alone. I haven’t had any frost issues, but I also haven’t tried multiple layers of it. I’mma pick up the beige one too, methinks, as I need a good light base colour.

I have been trying to find it, but everywhere is already sold out if they had it. 🙁

  • Ashley

Love that you included the close up shot of your eyes! Please do this with all your future reviews! Your eyelashes look banging!

  • Amandale

My Walmart has the display up but still nothing filling them =| I’m lad to live on an island where nothing sells out but the wait is killing me LOL

  • Alice Cho

I saw these the other day and I was actually wondering whether they are worth buying. Your review really helped me coming up with a conclusion 🙂

    P.S. I am a new follower

hi alice! great to meet you! Do pick some up! shade formula varies but overall they are a VERY nice budget cream shadow pick ;-D thanks for taking time to comment today!

  • anne

I picked up the inked in pink and was most disappointed in the color payoff. This is definitely not one i would wear by itself as it wasn’t opaque enough and didn’t show up well on my skintone. glad i got it on bogo lol

  • Simone

I had this shade in my hand today. I put it back though, and bought something else entirely.
I e got a lot of these babies, but that color looked so pretty! Glad I read ur review, I think I’ll pass for now at least. I’m also curios about that deep blue shade. I was holding them both like Aaah which one?! Which one?!!! And just put them down, took a deep breath, and walked away. Lol.

I think it looks quite pretty on u though. Not sure with my skin tone though.

    • the Muse

you’re GOOD simone! I had a hard time walking away from them and ended up purchasing all of them! aw thanks! It’s a little tricky to apply but gorgeous none the less!

  • Tiffany Martin

GOT IT!! Last one, haven’t had a try yet, >: Sad right? Stupid Lyme disease. I’ll get a chance this week can’t wait, it looks so amazing on you too!

  • Jes

Thanks for posting about these last week! I’ve been on such a cream shadow kick lately. Good pink colors are difficult to find, for my Asian skin tone. I was super disappointed by the Pomegranate Punk color – too dark and muddy. This one is much nicer. Surprisingly, the new Avon cream shadow in pink is a light, gorgeous pink that goes well with this one. I even like the very cool, wet, application feel of it. These two products almost makes me think I shouldn’t have bought the new Lancome infinite 24h shadow, but I was so curious…

    • the Muse

hey jes happy to hear you’re having success with this! aw but those lancome infinite shadows are simply to die for ;-D good investment in my opinion!

  • K. Janine

I really like this one! I wore it on NYE with MAC Pink Venus on top and some purple e/s in the crease.

  • Elizabeth

What is on your lips? Love the eyeshadow, but the lipstick (gloss?) is GORGEOUS!

  • Lizzy

Everybody’s different. That said, I love these! At fifty I get troubles far beyond creasing with eye make up. With Color Tattoo I find primer makes everything worse; I use a hefty moisturizer all over my face and eyes and let it dry completely. Sometimes lids get foundation too, what we did before primer was invented.

Anyway, I use a synthetic brush with these, much better results! And then clean with a little rubbing alchohol. Mine are from a crafts store, they have all the same shapes as cosmetic brushes. Short handled Loew Cornell are best. Craft brushes are usually cheaper than paint brushes (?) and much cheaper than cosmetic brushes. Except elf.

I’m a fine arts painter and usually don’t believe in plastic brushes but for this, and Paint Pot, they’re great. And clean up easy using alchohol as a solvent.

The shearing out is a pain- but it’s also a contemporary look. With some of these colors I just go with it and less is more.

I have the white (can’t remember the name) and I love it for highliting! I can see how one might have issues with all over use but the tattoo part does hold up even with no primer and a long day it’s perfectly there
