Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Spot Concealer + Treatment Review & Swatches

This was provided to me by a brand for review but all opinions expressed are my own

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Spot Concealer + Treatment is a newly formulated Instant Age Rewind Eraser Concealer which contains vitamin C that helps fight dark spots over time as it covers them. Maybelline promises to visibly decrease dark spots in as little as four weeks so not only does it concealer but it treats aging spots, dark spots, acne scarring, and sunspots.

Concentrated vitamin C is a tricky little ingredient and isn’t always stable or effective at brightening/whitening. I’d probably have to try this for a year or more to see the best results so I’ll only be discussing the texture, coverage, etc…of this as a concealer but not as a treatment.

I like the idea it could be treating my problem areas though and if it works all the better. I’ll update this post should I see any results in the future on dark spots.

This is available in five shades for around $8.99-$9.99. I didn’t like the original Instant Age Rewind Eraser Concealer in all honesty because I felt like it was greasy feeling. Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Spot Concealer (shade swatches below 22 Light/Medium) seems to have improved upon the formula. It’s a pleasantly moist, hydrating texture without being greasy or oily.

This has a tiny puff on the end which concealer flows into as you twist. The puff is a great way to glide concealer into place. Both the texture and this soft little puff makes for an excellent application and the formula just seems to glide across my skin like butter. Although I admit over time that little puff tends to get disgusting and isn’t easy to wash really.

The concealer itself blends easily under my eyes. It doesn’t crease into finer lines and provides sheer to medium coverage. It conceals my puffiness, my dark circles, and my finer lines providing decent coverage to brighten up the area and create the look of flawlessness. I think if you have severe dark circles you might need a little extra coverage but this seems to build well enough in my opinion. I’m pleased with the over all look of my eyes after application though.

My main issue with the formula is it has a rather short wear time. The concealer has a thinner consistency with a softer, hydrating finish. This could be one reason it tends to wear away rather quickly. I can easily get three to four hours wear from it but other concealers I know and use like my favorite It Cosmetics Concealer tends to wear strong all day. A stronger wear could be due to the thicker consistency of those concealers and the little bit of “stick” for lack of a better word that they have. Maybelline’s Instant Age Rewind Eraser lacks these characteristics which shortens the wear time.

Overall, I like this concealer as something for quick application and on the go days but if need really hardcore, long wearing coverage I do need to rely on another product to get the job done. I like the idea of a treatment concealer as well but I am skeptical that it’ll treat my dark spots…hell, I’ve spent good money on dark spot treatments that didn’t work, why would a $10 concealer do any better of a job is my opinion ya know? But who knows!

This one I’ll reserve for days I don’t need heavy, lasting coverage. It’ll work great for those who don’t rely heavily on concealer products.

Tried it?

Do share!

It’s so funny how differently products can work on different skin types. I have not tried this one, but the original is one of my go-to’s for undereye concealing, I find it has a dryer texture that stays put extremely well and is very opaque, completely the opposite of your experience! In fact that is why I do not use it on my face to conceal, it’s just too dry…and I have oily skin. So weird. I use it as the first layer (usually in brightener or corrector shade), then apply my foundation over it, then go back at the end with a more emollient concealer as a last step after my eyes are done to clean up any mess and give me some moisture. I have some pretty serious dark circles so I need a lot of help, lol.

I bought this concealer about two weeks ago and I enjoy it a lot! The whole dark spot correcting concept interested me due to my *severely* dark brownish-reddish acne scarring. Medium to “full” coverage concealers are never able to cover my scars completely, and layering this over foundations helps conceal it…

I’m a dry skinned gal too, but I found this to be very matte. It’s moisturizing at first, but it dries quickly and I have to blend ASAP! Strange how our experiences seem so different! It lasts all day for me too!

It also smells a little like paint to me, just as Revlon Colorstay and MAC foundations/concealers smell.

hey jacquelyn thanks for telling me a little about your experience with it. It’s very helpful for those that read the review and see someone else’s experience with the product ;-D yeah, it did have an odd smell, kinda like play-doh to me!

I just bought this but haven’t tried it yet. I was surprised to see that vitamin c (ascorbyl glucoside) was actually pretty high up on the ingredients list! That’s pretty cool, as I expected it to be at the bottom. Ascorbyl Glucoside is a more stable form of vitamin c as well. Maybelline says the soft foam applicator thingy is antimicrobial and there’s no need to wash it, or at least that’s what they said about the older age rewind eraser concealer, so I imagine this would be the same. Anyway, thanks for the in depth review as always! I got this in the shade fair, hopefully it’s fair enough for my pale ass lol.

my pleasure christi I noticed that too! Hopefully it actually works to improve darkness ;-D

Does setting it with powder help prolong the wear time or is that wear time including setting it? I have a good concealer for now (one that you raved about!) but when it is out I’ll need something new that I can use on both my face and under-eye area.

    • the Muse

setting powder will def prolong the wear lorraine, can get about four to five hours ;-D (which one?! )

I only have subtle dark circles – but I do have a lot of fine lines now. The old formula made my eyes look crinkly. Maybe this is better???

    • the Muse

laura I found the old formula kinda greasy….I think they reformulated it because it seems to sit smoother and has a more hydrating feel to me.

  • Mandy

Muse, do you know what shade NC45 would be in for this concealer? and for dry skin would you recommend this one or the previous age rewind concealer? Also (last question I promise!) would the neutralizer shade in the older age rewind concealer be good for highlighting on nc45 skin? Thanks again for your fantastic review!

  • Lizzy

Glad I saw this. I have the original and absolutely love it! It’s a nice density, it brightens, I’m upset they changed it… Thinner would not be an improvement in my book. And I like to keep treatment separate from paint.

Oh well. The new packaging looked germ farm-!ish anyway. But I hate it when my go to gets changed, I have to go on the hunt again.

It has two parabens, so it stops right there for me. Too bad. I have a few spots that need lightening. Any other ideas? Other than lemon juice.

  • Sabrina

This color looks really dark compared to the dna concealer you reviewed (I am reading a bunch as once).

I would not even think about the Vitamin C when deciding whether or not to buy this product. Vitamin C is very hard to make sure it is stabilized in a product and should be used at night, usually as a serum, under something like a moisturizer. The sun is usually the problem when it comes to using Vitamin C in the day time, its really hard to explain but I promise you will get better results at night. Same thing with retinA or any other variation, use at night. I am an esthetician, I should know these tips!

I have two light brown spots I have spent thousands on trying to cover and nothing has helped I can always see it help can you recommend anything please

  • Jess

What about the foundation? Is it the same consistency? I love this concealer and im thinking of buying the foundation as well.
