Moritaya Tofu Face Pack Review

I picked up the Moritaya Tofu Face Pack on a whim from Imomoko recently since it promised brighter skin. Lucky enough I’ve been keeping super hydrated so my normal dull skin has been behaving itself.

But hey, anything that promises brighter skin, especially from Asian brands, I’m typically all over like white on rice.

Did this work?

Naa! Plus it was expensive as hells ($33)!

I’ve read a fair few of reviews on the Moritaya Tofu Face Pack so while shopping at Imomoko I decided I needed to try it myself.

This contains a mixture of soy-based yogurt to brighten and hydrate skin. The big draw for me was brighter skin as I have a duller complexion without makeup and I’m always looking for ways to restore the glow to my skin with far too many products. Soy supposedly is an excellent brightening source so price aside I decided to try it. It’s only around $14 in Japan so the $33 price tag made me wince but I’m all about instant gratification and decided to grab it from Imomoko versus asking a friend in Tokyo to shop it for me, big mistake.

To use it you simply apply it to a clean face and leave it on for five to ten minutes. It’s thick and creamy but not sticky (or at least I didn’t think so). It feels a little cooling on skin and almost but not quite has a tingle somewhere in the background but that’s barely noticeable (or could be my imagination).

It contains honey, yogurt, tofu, etc…etc….I decided to refrigerate the remaining amount I didn’t use to keep it fresh. So far I tried it twice and aside from making my skin super smooth it didn’t really brighten much sadly.

It’s quite thick so I’d recommend removing it with a wet facial cloth to avoid the drama of splashing water on your face in the hopes of completely removing such a thickly textured mask. Just wet a washcloth, remove most of it, and proceed to splash water onto your face to get the rest off.

I wouldn’t purchase it again at $33 nor would I indulge in it for $15. It just didn’t offer any exciting results to make me want to repurchase it. Meh! It might work on a lighter skin tone than my own or even those with yellow undertones as it might brighten up things…..but for me, aside from the hydrating effect, there was no brightness to be had.

Oh well!

What’s your face mask of choice at the moment?

  • Kira

What would you recommend is the most effective brightening/whitening mask, Muse?

    • the Muse

hard to say kira…most are temporary :-/ the best brightening treatment I’ve tried to date is Philosophy’s Miracle Worker Brightener…really LOVE that stuff. I reviewed it several months ago. plus it does a good job on dark spots!

      • Natasha

May need to give that Philosophy Miracle worker a try. I have some serious age spots going on. Shiseido’s White Lucent serum worked really well, but I’m always on the look-out for something new…part of the addiction…

    What a disappointment >:

One of my fave brightening masks is the freeman pineapple mask, and I’d say you should try it but I searched and sure enough you already have, haha!!

    Here’s your old post: https://www.musingsofamuse.com/2010/03/beauty-on-a-budget-freeman-pineapple-facial-enzyme-mask-review.html

The packaging has changed, and it’s also possible the formula may have too. Maybe take the advice of the Muse and try it! I agree with her, it’s a fantastic budget pick (:

I’m sorry to hear that this didn’t work for you. If you are looking to brighten and whiten your skin tone, give the whitening line from Paul & Joe a try. It worked great for me.

  • Nanalouu

I have extremely dry skin and I am loving My Beauty Diary’s 2 step snail mask… The cream it comes with is heavenly. Can you recommend any other hydrating/brightening masks to me Muse?

  • Saira

Muse I have pretty much the same skin issues like you and “Korres Wild Rose + vitamin C sleeping mask” is doing wonders for me..the only thing is i can’t sleep with the stuff on my face cuz the smell is kinda strong for me but I leave it on for 3-4 hours and I can see almost a shade lighter immediately after washing off. It also helps a little with dryness for me. 🙂

    • the Muse

yay happy to hear it saira! I actually like the Korres Wild Rose collection in general, def liked the sleeping mask but I WISH it worked as well as you say ;-D I didn’t see that much brightness from it, damn girl you’re lucky ;D

  • Annie

plain yogurt always work for me, sometime i add in powdered oatmeal.. my face always instantly brighten up afterward.. it seems to work for the rest of the girls at my house too

Thanks for the review, I was just looking at these products. They are spendy at imomoko! I think I’ll stick to my much cheaper soy based products from SANA.

Still hurting from ordering some ichikami hair products from imomoko myself. The upcharge o.o Oh well, it was still the cheapest I could find the set I wanted online.

    • the Muse

she’s so very dependable and very quick to ship that’s why I shop there but yes, the prices are a little absurd sometimes 🙁 agreed Andi. I try to shop all my haircare from alphabeautyuk, she’s typically reasonable but sometimes shipping is $$$ 🙁

    • Fuu

Have you tried Yesstyle? There prices are not TOO bad most of the time. Like $5 more than what I would pay at my local Japanese supermarket.

  • Jess

Muse, have you ever found a brightening/whitening line that also has anti-aging properties?

    • the Muse

miracle worker jess…the pads, followed by the brightening treatment, and followed up with the moisturizer, every single night ;-D and use the AM Miracle Worker Pads as well totally eases dullness, brightens skin, lightens dark spots/areas.

  • Fuu

The price of that has gone up since popular model Rinka talked about it being her ”must have” item recently and other models have followed saying that they like it. I’m a sucker for anything soy (I use Nameraka Honpo religiously) but the ingredient list for this mask is already in my fridge. I just have to stick it all in a blender!

  • Natasha

jeez I’m such an idiot. I went to buy skin care items and ended up spending over $900. This product was one of them. I am NEVER going to trust those cosmetic sales women again. From now on i will buy products after reading online reviews. Ughh my poor parents. I hope i can pay them back.

  • wanda

so I recently bought this in Hong Kong and it was quite cheap. I then saw this review and wasn’t too excited about trying it :/ However, I read the packaging in Chinese and this is recommended to be used in shower so it can be used daily! I’m not looking for any brightening effect but I sure am excited about not wasting any time in the shower 🙂 Just thought you’d be interested to know

    • Isabella Muse

Thanks Wanda! I don’t actually have it anymore so can’t try it! But now you have me curious! Hmm!
