Neutrogena Healthy Skin Primer Review & Swatches

This was provided to me by a brand for review but all opinions expressed are my own

If you’re shopping new primers for the new year you might want to check out Neotrogena Healthy Skin Primer with SPF 15 ($13.99). It’s a little expensive for drugstore primer but worth taking a look at if you have drier skin.

Let’s take a look!

This primer contains natural soy which is a proven tone correcting ingredient that helps improve the look of skin over time. I can’t say if that’s working or not but I do like how my skin looks and feels after application.

If SPF is important to you in your primer it does contain a minimal amount of SPF 15 to protect skin as it perfects.

It does promise an eight hour even look with or without makeup. Again, I didn’t feel it evened out skin tone so much that I noticed. What did draw me to it was the thinner, hydrating consistency of the primer. This is a glow-y shade of yellow beige which applies and absorbs into my skin easily. Don’t worry the glow and slight shimmer you see in my photos does not translate to skin as a shimmery mess. It merely gives my skin a slight healthy glow nothing more. The texture has a dewy dry down which enables my foundation to apply easily thanks to the hydrated smoothness of my skin. Considering my skin is drier I definitely appreciate this sort of finish in my primer of choice.

One of the things I loved about it was the fact that even without foundation and just a little blush my skin looked picture perfect (I’m wearing this in my Flower Blush review).

Unfortunately it didn’t seem to provide longer wear to my makeup but it did however, keep it looking fresh for the time I did have it on.

Overall, Healthy Skin Primer is a nice pick up if you have drier skin. I like how it acts as a makeup and a primer all in one so even without basic coverage under it, it still gives skin a healthy prepped appearance. However, the price tag is a little high for what you get here. Perhaps on sale it would prove worth picking up but at near $14 I wouldn’t recommend running out to buy it.

Tried it?

My insanely flaky skin cries out for this… unfortunately Canadian drugstores in my area don’t carry Neutrogena. *tear*

Muse, how would you compare this to MAC Studio Moisture fix? My derm put me on some CRAZY topicals that both eats my makeup off and makes me look like a shedding snake at the same time. Hot, let me tell ya’. Anyhow, MAC seems to help but if there’s a cheaper option I’m all for it. Thanks!

Ooh! I need this! My skin is really dry and acne prone, so this primer is really appealing to me

While I realize everybody reacts differently to products, I thought it may help you to know that I also have acne prone skin, and this product did not break me out!
I personally think you might like this. Especially since your dry & and acne prone!

I’m going to have to try this! I’ve been looking for something similar to the Smashbox’s hydrating primer and I’m *praying* this one will compare:)

The shimmer is the only thing that scares me, I might give it a try if I see it on sale 🙂

I’ve got some pore issues so I can’t wear tons of shimmer, and while this primer is only so/so for me (I’m not especially dry), the shimmer didn’t translate on me at all!

This is definitely a decent primer, just not my personal cup of tea. I could see someone with dry skin loving this!

simone, totally understand you need something silicone based to fill pores/smooth them over 🙂

Muse! I bought this based on your recommendation and I am so glad I did! I have VERY DRY sensitive skin and I would constantly flake dry dead skin even though I use moisturizer every day and night and I exfoliate on a regular basis.

This primer has immediately worked wonders. I tried it out last night over my moisturizer and loved how smooth it made my skin feel and there was no dry skin!

Then, I tried it this morning over my moisturizer and used my least moisturizing BB cream as a test. By this point in the day, I’ve normally got a bunch of dry flaky spots all over my face. However, because of the addition of this primer, my face has no dry spots. It’s a miracle, seriously.

Thank you for the recommendation! I am forever in your debt!

YAY wow Julie that sounds like AWESOME success ;-D congrats! I find it works fab on its own with a tiny bit of cheek stain as well (no foundation/bb cream) and gives a nice fresh faced look ;-D enjoy and so happy you love it!

Just saw this at Walmart and picked some up. After reading the reviews on it, it seems like a great product for acne prone and super dry skin (I have both). Ill be trying this tomorrow morning and am praying that it works miracles on my skin!

This is one of my favorite primers. I love the way it feels and leaves my skin with a healthy glow. A delight to wear with or without foundation. I am in my early 60s and always on the hunt for products that will hydrate my skin. This is among my top contenders.
