Urban Decay Glinda Palette Review & Swatches

This was provided to me by a brand for review but all opinions expressed are my own

Urban Decay Glinda Palette 1

Ahh the Glinda Palette! Glinda is one of two new Urban Decay Oz inspired palettes that the brand recently launched in collaboration with the Disney film, Oz the Great and Powerful.

I recently reviewed the Theodora Palette for you and must say she’s more my speed. I love the Glinda palette but she’s a more lighter variation which will work well on paler skin tones or those with fairer hair and eyes.

Take a look!

I must admit visually Glinda is the more appealing palette to my eyes. As much as I love nudes there is something so very pretty and delicate about Glinda’s shades. I don’t like to limit anyone from wearing any shades…I’m not the type of person that believes certain shades are meant for certain skin types but in this instance I felt like Theodora was the better option for me as Glinda’s paler more pastel colors just drown me out a bit. Le sigh!

Urban Decay Glinda Palette 2

On the upside, there are some gorgeous colors here that are an absolute treat to behold.

This is a $49 palette and includes six full size shadows two of which are split down the middle as a duo of sorts. I mentioned in the Theodora review that I felt these new duo eyeshadows might be a little preview to what Urban Decay will do for Summer 2013. What do you think?

Shades:

  • Tornado (vibrant deep purple shimmer)
  • Aura (iridescent white with blue shift/Iridescent white with red shift)
  • Magic (pinkish purple with a golden shimmer), Illusion (pale peach satin)
  • Oz (gold with gold glitter/silver with silver glitter)
  • South (warm pale gray shimmer with silver micro-glitter)
  • Glinda Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Color (light sheer nude)
  • Rockstar 24/7 Glide-on Eye Pencil (deep eggplant)

Although not nearly as large as the pop up palettes that Urban Decay has released in the past there is still a value to be had here as the value is well over $100. I find the Build Your Own Palette interface refreshing as it travels easily and allows you to customize your colors by popping in other eyeshadows or buying six new ones after you’ve used the shades it came with.

Urban Decay has always had a very pleasing eyeshadow formula. It’s been one of my favorite formulas since I started getting into mid-range and higher end makeup and that’s going back over 10 years ago. The newly revamped formula is even nicer than ever with a creamy, velvety texture that’s extremely saturated with pigment, easy to blend, and simply stunning all around. Unlike Theodora I had issues with some of Glinda’s shades as there was a SLEW of micro glitter in some of these colors. It’s fall out city and gets just about everywhere…face, cheeks, eyes, even my neck! Thankfully all the shades aren’t like this but the worst offender is Oz.

Aura

I had a hard time getting Glinda’s more nude look as you see on Michelle in the promo images. I used Magic on my lid and Tornado in my crease with Auru as a highlighter of sorts. My look is messy and muddy unfortunately, I just had a hard time working with the lighter colors but that’s my skills, nothing to do with the formula.

You also get a Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Color in Glinda which is a rather lovely MLBB rosy beige shade. This isn’t as pigmented as Theodora’s pencil and has a little less glossiness for the finish and a tad more dryness.

And finally Rockstar 24/7 Eyeliner is also included with the palette. This has a creamy texture like all 24/7 Eyeliners with a buttery formula that applies without skipping or tugging.

Urban Decay Rockstar 24 7 Glide-on Eye Pencil

Overall, Glinda didn’t work for me color wise but her quality is there as well as her value. The main issue here is a bit of micro glitter fall out joy you’ll have to deal with but outside of that the overall palette has some beautiful colors that don’t look particularly great on me but will definitely be suitable for someone else I’m sure!

I guess it’s a official I’m more a Theodora!

thanks sunny ;-D how’s my little friends? enjoying the igloo? did you get either one? I really liked Theo too, just more my shade speed ;D

  • shellypea

lol Muse, so many times (like this time) that I think something looks great on you, you say it’s not for you!

    • Gina

I completely agree; I saw this palette on you and was just thinking wow you look stunning.

  • Morgan

Thanks for the review!! As always your reviews are the best! Just wondering how many shades have the micro-glitter? The soft shades are just so pretty! 🙂

    • the Muse

oz does and there is small minor fall out with aura and south but not huge chunky glittery bits morgan 🙂

  • Nicole

Just MHO, but I think you look stunning! My coloring is similar to yours so I hope I can rock it. 🙂

Glitter makes me nervous though, so we’ll see! 🙂

    • the Muse

thanks nicole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m not so sure! I think I like theo better! wet your applicator or a little powder under your eyes and swiped away after application to avoid all that glitter 😀

      • Nicole

Thanks for the tip about the powder. 🙂

I like Theodora better too. That one is a keeper for me! 🙂

  • Cindy Ramirez

These colors are super pretty, but a little light and safe on my side. The look you came up with looks just darling on you though!

    • the Muse

aw thanks cin! botched up blending and rushed in the AM to apply=not so great look ;D

  • Lynsey

I also got this set today and I love this look! I’ve noticed that the shade South keeps popping out of it’s place in my set though, does yours do this too or do you think I have ended up with a bad egg? It will stay in but pops out at one end when I try to push it in it’s place fully, a little bit annoying!!

    • the Muse

bad egg, mine pop out easily when I want them to but are snug in their wells for travel! return, get a new one!

      • Lynsey

Thought so as my other build your own set doesn’t do this! Hope they’ll exchange it, I’ve already used it lol

        • the Muse

i think if you explain the issue they’d be happy to do so! they should pop out easily but when they are inside the palette they should not be loose, popping out, etc..they have a snug feel.

          • Lynsey

Hope so, I’ve been buying UD products for about 8 years and this is my first problem! Thank you for your help 🙂

          • the Muse

my pleasure! sounds like a fluke perhaps it was roughly handled during shipping :-/

  • Victoria

This one suits you too. But i agree, mostly light pastels in this palette. I purchase both so i just mixed in one of the browns from the theodora palette to the glinda, that’s the great thing about these palettes. And boy are you right about oz. i wish UD would either stop making these kinds of shadow or at least teach us how to deal with them. Overall, i love them both.

    • the Muse

thanks victoria ;-D I agree, that’s the nice thing, you can mix and match shades from both and do some awesome looks ;-D I typically use a sponge applicator wet and this helps lessen the fall out! but yeah that glitter OMGZ ;-D

      • victoria

ok i used both palettes a little longer and i can see why you prefer theodora. i’m asian and although i do love the glinda, theodora really compliments me more. you’ve got lighter skin, i think both look pretty on you. i always have a problem with purples even though i love the color so much.

  • Alicia

I’ve seen so many reviews of this palette, but your review and swatches made me finally want it! Love your blog! xx

  • deliah

I picked this up today! It’s $58Cdn and my Sephora had just put the testers out, but I was able to buy one from the back room. I agree about the miroglitter being a pain for fallout, I found using my finger and just sort of pressing it into place worked well enough. I’m a pale blue-eyed auburny brunette, so I’m in lurrrve with these colours. And m’dear Muse, maybe you’re just not used to seeing such light shades all over the lids on your lovely self?

  • Agata

I think you look beautiful in those pictures Muse! I just got my palette today, I haven’t used it yet but I am in love with all those colors.

  • Michelle

Hi Muse! Great review, as always. I don’t know if I’ll pick up the Glinda palette, but I am loving the lippie. Any recs for a good dupe?
Thanks for all the awesome reviews <3

    • the Muse

hi michelle my pleasure and thanks! seems kinda similiar to the naked saturated pencil tbh!

  • LINDARRAGNAR

you know what I really wasn’t interested in these at all.. but those swatches are so intriguing,, I mean aura looks like such a strange color. hmmmm $49 for this or maybe the new dior stuff coming out, or the Guerlain jumbo perles, or the new Armani pop color palette………………….

;-O LOL I wish I was a billionare as well muse!! <3 (we can dream right….)

  • Janet

This palette is so pretty–I wish I could still wear eye shadows! It really looks lovely on you!

  • Megan

    Very pretty eye look!
(Btw, I love your blog, I check it almost every day!)

  • Lisa

I adore the Theodora palette, and don’t even want to try this one. The Theo has the most amazingly soft, dense shades. I’m going to wear different shades every day this week — and that never happens, but i can’t wait to experiment with all of them. These Glinda colors are too light for me. Love your reviews every day!!!

    • the Muse

aw thank you Lisa!!!!!!!!! I love Theo too! Even though it isn’t as big as the pop ups I still can think of dozens of looks using it ;D

  • Denise

This palette is soft and pretty, but I like Theodora better for us dark haired girls. But OMG your eyelashes are freaking AMAZING! What’s your secret? I need whatever mascara it is you are wearing.

  • Jules

Those colours really look pretty on you. I wouldn’t think they would as i have the same colour, eyes as you can purples never seemed to look good on me. I’m seriously thinking about making a purchase now as it looks so good on you.

    Jules aka Flabbyface

  • Jen

I don’t think it’s necessarily your skills or the formula. I find lighter looks just don’t work on me – they all come out muddy, and it’s because they just don’t flatter my eye shape as well as either deeper looks or high contrast looks. Glinda is gorgeous, but I know from experience it wouldn’t work all that well on me.

    • the Muse

hey jen thanks ;-D feel better ’bout my application hehe ;-D yeah…at one time felt like I could wear anything but lately not so much ;-/ oh well theo is gorgeous at least!

  • Majick

LOVe the color you did on your lids! I have to see your other review now so I can decide which witch I am. LOL

      • Majick

So, I guess I have a split personality lol- I walked out with both palettes and was able to use a F&F 20% off coupon. I wore Glinda yesterday and loved the look. I really liked the lippie in this one. I like these pencils and this is a great nude with just a touch of shimmer. The formula is moisturizing and stays on.

If anyone wants to dup a lippie from either kit with a color in the permanent line, f-bomb is just a hair lighter than Theodora but almost identical. Naked is close to Glinda but with a touch more pink in it, Glinda is more beige.

I also had a problem with shadows not seating properly in my Theodora palette so I exchanged it and the one I have now is fine. My Glinda palette was perfect the first time.

I most certainly was not going to get these and when I saw the combo of colors in each one I just could not, well, resistance was futile. LOL

  • Miho Mallory

OMG I need it~~ Thanks for the swatches! It’s everything I hoped it would be! >w<

  • Sabrina

I have seen this several places and wasn’t interested… then for some reason I clicked on your reviews, now I want it! Darn it! I have light brown hair, fair skin and hazel-honey eyes (gold with lighter brown), I was just blonde for a few years so that depends on my budget more than anything. I don’t like warm colors on my eyes and that is the main reason I am not liking the other UD Oz palette.

Speaking of UD and their glitter shadows I saw an ELF product that would probably help, it reminded me of a barrier for mascara. Or you could do what Kim K does and put a massive amount of powder or concealer under your eyes and damp sponge away excess or do face makeup last.

  • lisa

just got glinda yesterday, it’s my first ever urban decay pallette. i am wearing it today – used the insert in the package to apply the colors (which didn’t include oz) and i’m really liking the pastels — it’s fun but work wearable. and i LOVE the MLBB lip pencil. i am now tempted to buy Theodora! there goes my paycheck 😉

    • the Muse

yay lisa happy to hear you love it. I really loved it too! Theo is my fav though ;D

      • Lisa

i’d like to try Theo but I don’t know if those colors would work as well for me, guess I’m a good witch and you’re a wicked one. 😉

  • Pennie

The only color that really appeals to me in this palette is Tornado, but it looks very similar to Rock Star. How do the two compare? In other words, do I need both??

  • Lisa

so, now that i’m totally in love with the Super Saturated High Gloss Lip Color in Glinda I’m already obsessing over what to do when it runs out — haha. Do any of your Urban Decay fans know if there’s a similar color that Urban Decay makes? It’s such a perfect color for me and it stays on all day. I’m becoming an Urban Decay fan!

  • nytengale1

I just saw this in person today, and I prefer Theodora. The blue reminds me of the Maybelline powder blue eyeshadow that my mom wore throughout the 70’s, 80’s, and (shamefully) the 90’s.
The packaging is gorgeous. These marketing execs definitely know what they’re doing.
