Benefit Fake Up Concealer Review & Swatches

Benefit Fake Up Concealer

The new Benefit Fake Up Crease-Control Hydrating Concealer ($24) will be available this March in three shades. I happen to be a huge fan of Benefit concealers particularly Boi-ing which has played a very important part of my early twenties concealing adventures. When I heard Benefit Fake Up Concealer was launching I immediately couldn’t wait to get my hands on it and play!

Hydrating concealer? Check I need some of that considering how dry my eyes are! Crease-control? I need that too please! Thanks every so much.

So what’s the verdict on Benefit’s newest concealer?

Benefit Fake Up Concealer might look like a fancy little lipstick in its silver tube with pink accents but it’s all about the concealer my friends. Although I have an aversion to any sort of concealer that comes in a tube as I instantly think “dry formula!”, Benefit proves me wrong about all the things I thought I knew about concealer sticks!

Available in Light, Medium, and Dark shades this concealer features a core of creamy concealer surrounded by a moisturizing solid serum with Vitamin E and apple seed extract.

I was a little worried about the surrounding moisturizing stick as it actually outweighs the concealer. I want as much coverage as possible and the moisturizing stick that surrounds the concealer core is way bigger in size. This worried me as I thought perhaps I wouldn’t really get much concealer under my eye as I applied and more moisture. But…it actually works and evenly distributes concealer which is combined with the clear moisturizing stick. It actually melts into skin on contact and the texture of the concealer stick starts to melt a little as you swipe. The best technique here is to swipe directly from the tube under eyes and blend out with fingers.

I actually felt it was TOO moisturizing. That’s odd considering I always feel like I need as much moisture as I can possibly get under my eyes. I wouldn’t recommend this if you have an oily eye area as it’ll prove a little greasy and oily. Even under my drier eyes I felt like the texture felt very greasing. I’d highly suggest setting with powder for the best finish after application as this mattifies the area. The finish feels a little too dewy to the touch and never truly “dry” without a little powder to set it.

The concealer is sheerer but builds up to medium coverage. I wish it was a little brighter, my best shade was medium as light was too pale however, it didn’t really make my eyes look brighter and less tired. It did conceal minor darkness, finer lines, and puffiness. I just wish it eased the tired look from my eyes the way my trusty It Cosmetics Concealer does.

Benefit Fake Up has a tendency to fade rather quickly. You’d have to blame that on the creamy, highly moisturizing formula. Any makeup that is this moisturizing won’t wear well for long. Again, I recommend powder to set it. I personally use Skin Food Salmon Brightening Powder applied with my Bobbi Brown Dual Ended Concealer Brush. Without powder coverage lasts about three hours sometimes four with powder I can get a full eight hours.

I think Benefit’s design of a hydrating concealer is ideal for a more mature eye as it combats dehydrated skin and provides sheer to medium coverage in a single swipe. The moisturizing aspect is the key selling point here. I’d avoid it in the Summer (even if your eyes are dry) as it might prove a little too heavy with a shorter wear in warmer months. I also wouldn’t select this concealer if you have oily eyes, it’s just too rich for those with oily skin.

Overall, I liked the idea of Fake Up more than I liked the actual product after trying it. I think it was a little too moisturizing for me which ended up making it feel very heavy and almost greasy. I think it’ll get on famously with a more aging eye than my own. Granted, I have fine lines, puffiness, and dryness…but I realize those aren’t as intense as I thought after trying this concealer. This is definitely geared towards a more mature eye area which is experiencing crepiness, dryness, and deeper, heavier lines.

Benefit Fake Up Hydrating Concealer launches this March from Benefit Cosmetics.

Do you want to try it?

I got a sample of this product already mixed together in the mail from Benefit. The sample they sent was too dark, but I still tried on the product. I felt it was too chalky and couldn’t even get it to blend. Perhaps it was because they sent it pre-mixed together? I like the concept as well, but the sample was so horrible that I do not even want to bother testing it out in a store.

      • Shelby

I’m guessing she means that it was just one colour, the clear serum or whatever part already mixed with the concealer.

          • Paige

Muse – I know what Alicia meant! I, too, received a sample from HSN in the mail. It was a trifold brochure and the 3 concealers are inside, underneath foiled flaps…just like the samples found inside magazines or at drugstores. But, because they can’t literally mail a sample in a tube I guess, they just combine the concealer/hydrator together in one blended sample and that’s what I received. I took a photo to place on my blog…makes more since in pictures! I agree though – it’s SUPER moisturizing, to the point of oiliness. Yuck.

          • the Muse

oooo I get it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was like what wait who?! 😀 now I understand. Yeah, handing off a sample card for this would prob result in a messier overall look! yes! yes! yes! very moisturizing to the point I felt greasy! I think it is geared towards a more mature drier skin type. I thought I was incredibly dry but this concealer proves me wrong lol!

  • Sai

It looks like it would be better if they switch the order – the hydrating serum core inside with the concealer outside….hope u got wht I mean….just like the one from The Body Shop haha

    • the Muse

yeah….I think I kinda like it outside but maybe a little more concealer versus the moisturizing surrounding.

  • Christy

Pretty neat concept. I’m oily so I think I’ll skip it. I’m like you, I think Bo-ing is the bomb! I’m a peaceful person, but if someone tried to take my Bo-ing out of my hand I might fight them for it…or at least trip them and run! lol

  • katie

What a bummer. I also have dryness and the fact it wouldnt settle into lines sounded great. I am using erase paste (i know it is a corrector) and at first I loved it but I creases so much on me now. I should look into the it cosmetics concealer. I have heard a lot of good things about it. Is it your HG?

  • Lisaa

Thanks Muse for this review. I saw this on HSN and was “this” close to ordering it but the ratio of moisture ring to concealer was out of proportion to me. I currently use a combo of Benefit erase paste, Tarte creaseless concealer set w/ BE multi tasking bisque. I also have thier Well Rested and was curious of how you think it compares to the Skin Food powder that you love? IT cosmetics concealer is definitely on my list for my next “to try concealear”. I appreciate your thorough reviews, comments and opinions

    • the Muse

Hi Lissaa…yeah, it’s just a little too much moisture versus concealer. I don’t think Well Rested is as similiar to Salmon Powder..The Salmon Powder is a yellow powder so it diffuses dark circles as it sets, I like it alot more than well rested to be honest 🙂 Hope this helps!

  • Caitlin

I would try it, but sheer to medium concealer is not for me. Honestly, if you only need sheer to medium coverage, I don’t really understand why you need concealer at all, just use the foundation. Unless you were one of those amazing people who doesn’t need foundation. Look, lets just say with my skin that sheer products are a mystery and leave it at that, LOL!

    • the Muse

lol I agree…I really need full coverage concealer under my eyes to look my best!

  • Kimmwc03

I got the sample from HSN too and didn’t care for it. I was waiting for your review anyway and now I know I can skip it.

    • the Muse

kim, I think it might be TOO moisturizing. What did you think was wrong with it?

  • Hillarie

Definitely not something I am interested in. It’s a shame, too. I usually like Benefit products

  • Icequeen81

too bad you didn’t like it the idea sounds good but if it greasy nothing for me

  • Jeri

I’m also really dry under my eyes and this looks too greasy. I think your right there should be more concealer and less grease.

  • Vail Valley Girl

So, I live and die by Erase Paste. Sounds like this more moisturizing than Erase Paste. How doe the coverage compare? Moisture is always a problem at altitude. I like the idea of a stick because I could just swipe it on.

    • the Muse

sheerer actually, I think that erase paste offers more coverage…the moisture aspect takes away from how pigmented the concealer is due to the fat the surrounding serum melds with the concealer and kinda sheers it out.

  • Alina

Hey Muse you mentioned Boing as your fave concealer, does it play nice with a really hydrating eye cream as a base?

    • the Muse

alina I noticed as I got old I got drier and even with a good eye cream there was still creasing issues however, if I’m super careful and prep well with primer/eye cream I can def get it wearing nicely. I used to use it all over my eye, 360, under, lid, etc and it did amazing things for me ;-D

  • Kimryan8

I too got those samples in my Allure magazine. Just dipping my finger in it I knew it was WAY too greasy for me. I put it on the top part of my hand which is super dry in the winter and it didn’t even absorb or dry. Yuck. I have oily skin and this won’t be on my face ever!

  • elaine

It’s a shame it doesn’t work too well because I also have an issue with dry concealers! Onto the search again.. Thanks for the review!

  • Danii

Boi-ing didn’t match me at all in the lightest shade, and I wanted to like it. It was fun to poke! (Played in the Sephora tester >_> ) I like the little starburst effect in the second picture, looks really neat. Since I don’t use concealer, just my foundation to cover up stuff, I wouldn’t be buying this to begin with. I hate “dewy finishes” on my combination skin! It just looks more like an oily mess. Would make some pretty awesome lipstick packaging though, you wouldn’t lose it in your bag ;D Bags eat things… Even in my tiny travel makeup bag, stuff gets eaten unless its the size of the Beauty Insider Deluxe Sample of Diesel Loverdose. If you haven’t seen it, it’s like an exact mini-replica of the heart bottle, minus the “dagger.” So pretty ♪( ▽`) Okay I’m done rambling.

    • the Muse

oh god my bag too I put money in it or cosmetics and it just disappears at the bottom! gone ;- D lol never to be seen again until I clean out my bag haha! I haven’t seen the DL but heard about it, someone was telling me it smelled nice ;-D

      • Danii

Bag, why are you an infinite black hole of cosmetic- and money-eating proportions? I don’t know if it has vanilla in it, but oooooh after a certain point you smell like this edible vanilla! It’s not syrupy or gross, maybe a vanilla extract smell? It just smells tasty!

        • the Muse

oh that sounds amazing! not only bag but my tote too (carry both) it just loses ALL! bottomless pit!

          • Danii

While I don’t know my “scent profile,” I know a good perfume when I smell it and that is one of them! I had a tote bag that ate pencils when I was in school. Drop a marker, pencil or anything smaller than a notebook an it would be gone.

  • Cassia

Cool, I love benefit and always liked everything I’ve tried. Now I wanna put my hands on that fine one one. Maybe I’ll get this one too.

  • Mandy

Just ordered this from Ulta yesterday, and can’t wait to try it out. I think I’ll probably use it with Boi-ing, which I love for the coverage, but is too dry sometimes.

  • neenafaar

wow this post was such a money saver.I have oily skin around my eyes but the non creasing concept was tempting for me, as I tend to crease with most concealers, but I’m not into the oily eye look^^

    tkz!

ps: best concealer for dark circles in my experience is Erase Paste!

  • Casey

Just wondering – did it tug on your undereye during application? I think that’s the main reason why I prefer cream concealers usually, but this looks good.

    • the Muse

not casey, easy glide, very slippery 🙂 it’s kinda like a concealer injected with serum.

  • Maria Manoela Porto

I like Fake ut but it does not conceal alone and does not last. My perfect cenario is to put Fake it on and let it stand a bit to moisture the eye area – mine is so dry! Them I put my Erase Paste or Bobbi Brown corrector and finish with a Powder foundation like bareMinerals Ready (I love this one right now!). If I am wearing liquid foundation I still like to aplly Fake ut under because it is so moisturizing… but it is a poor concealer if you really need a concealer!

  • Avalith

It didn’t feel moisturizing to me, but more like.. balmy waxy almost silicon-ish texture for me. It doesn’t feel like it’s moisturizing or hydrating my under eye area; just makes them feel balmy and waxy lol; maybe I’ll just return this…? (and get the Nars concealer! I’m a genius lol)

  • melinda

i just wanted to tell you that you do an amazing job with your make up reviews. i am 44 years and i thoroughly enjoy your reviews. like this benefits concealer for instance – it will work wonders for me as i am quie older then you are.
    so thank you.

    • the Muse

aw you’re most welcome melinda and thank YOU for visiting and reading them 😀

  • merilla

Ugh, i wish i saw your review before buying this product. It is indeed too moisturising and fade quickly, i hate it so much i only use it twice. It’s a splurge for me as Benefit’s price tags are higher in my country. What a shame. *Sorry for the rant. Next time i’ll check up on your blog before buying anything. Thank you for your accurate review, really appreciate it. 🙂

    • the Muse

hey merilla so sorry to hear it 🙁 sigh! my pleasure I wish it had saved you from a purchase ;(
