NYX Matte Finish Long Lasting Setting Spray Review

NYX Matte Finish Long Lasting Setting Spray

NYX Matte Finish Long Lasting Setting Spray is one of two new setting sprays the brand introduced for Spring 2013. These are 2 oz bottles for $8 each.

I’m a little iffy on Setting Sprays as I’m always sorta wary of spritzing a just made up face with what is essentially water combined with some other ingredients. It’s kinda like, wait, hold on a second, I just did my makeup now you want me to mist myself madly with water? Ummm no…!

But actually some do have benefits. Particularly if you’re a mineral girl or you use powder to set. A small amount of setting mist actually will give your makeup a more refined finish and in some cases they really do prolong the wear of makeup.

Does NYX’s version work?

NYX created their setting sprays in two finishes meant for both shiny and dry faces. Matte Finish Long Lasting Setting Spray is obviously the one that would be best suited for those with oily skin. To use simply do your makeup as normal and as the final step in your regime mist onto your face by holding the bottle several inches away from your face.

Now I had two issues with this mist.

1. The 2 oz bottle at $8 is a little costly at a glance.

Taking into account these bottles typically come in a 4 oz size for twice that amount it is actually a good budget pick. Eight dollars seems a lot at first for a mere 2 oz bottle but do the math on either Urban Decay or Skindinavia’s bottles and you’re saving a good deal of money.

2. TOO strong a mist.

Here’s where things got bad…..these should produce a fine mist when spritzed onto face. However, something went terribly wrong with NYX’s mister (bottle) as it delivers a BLAST of mist into your face that does more harm than good. I found it difficult to mist evenly onto my face as it felt like the spritzer was on steady stream rather than a simple mist one. I ended up with too much of the product everywhere and it smudged my mascara, liner, and blush a bit due to that steady stream. I literally had to pat it off with a washcloth.

I find I have to have the bottle VERY far away from my face and follow up with a tissue to pat it into place. I didn’t want to have to do this but in order to test it best I had too.

On the upside it does well mattifying my shine forehead and keeping it matte for a good four to five hours. I have drier skin but my forehead is oily. So long as I pat it into place correctly it won’t mess up my makeup and thus creates a visible barrier between my skin and the open air. You can feel it get a little tighter after application but it’s not an uncomfortable tightness. My eyeshadow and blush weren’t terribly extended with this nor was my BB Cream or foundation.

Overall, the faulty packaging doesn’t make me terribly inclined to recommend it. I’m hoping the other formula has a better bottle/mister. Unfortunately, I felt like I was hosing myself down rather than aiding it to keep anything in place for longer wear.

Le sigh!

Really wanted to like this.

It’s available now at Ulta.

Anyone try it?

What sort of results did you get with it?

Get the MUFE one its amazing and alcohol free, it is more money (obviously) lol but you get 4oz for 28$

I would much rather use a good primer (Black Radiance Complexion Perfection and/or Milk of Magnesia) to stop the problem at it’s source than risk running my makeup. 🙂

I just tried this for the first time today, Muse. After a 12 hour day, I think it performed well on my skin. No shine whatsoever on my nose, chin or cheeks; just a small “glow” right between my eyebrows. I agree with you about the pump. They need to revamp the design so each pump releases a fine mist and not a splattering of droplets.

    • the Muse

I had good experience with it on my forehead shari, worked like a charm to keep it shine-free. Unfortunately the pump/mister/spritzer is awful. I thought maybe mine was a fluke but I guess that’s the way it is designed if you experienced the same. It’s a big burst of product that hits you square in the first. Should be a finer mist. sad sigh!

i think i will try it because i always use the UD one before i apply my face products so maybe i will not have a problem with the way the mist gets out.. and i also can use an empty bottle of the UD one or the pump if it fist. i think is a good idea, even better if i can save some money 🙂

  • BooBooNinja

To get around the terrible spray nozzle, maybe you can spray it up in the air and the run under it with your face turned up to the sky.
    Just a thought.

    😉

I suppose if you have an old Urban Decay or Skindinavia bottle you could pour this setting spray into it if you were intent on saving money!

  • Justine

Maybe if the formula is good you could put it in an empty Urban Decay/Skindinavia bottle (or the travel size one)?

  • yelena

i am trying to find a mattifying mist that prolongs my make up. glad i saw this. thnx muse!

    • the Muse

yeah but it doesn’t actually “spritz”. it kinda squirts at you lol. like a water gun shot!

  • Danii

Maybe pour it into another bottle of the same size, like a travel sized mister, with a better mister/spritzer? I’ve never used a setting spray personally, only primers. Was interested, but I’m still skeptical… I’ve never used Urban Decay’s sprays either.

  • Cindy Ramirez

I strongly believe in a finishing spray! It brings back a little luminosity in case I was a little heavy handed with the setting powder or my matte foundation looks a little too flat and matte. If you like the formula, you could switch it into a different bottle. :]

  • Irene

I seem to have that same problem with so many spray products lately! I definitely won’t be purchasing this unless they change the bottle, which is a same since I was really looking forward to this. I’ll check your other reviews of mists and setting sprays, I always use powder so I’m really in need of one! Are there any you’ve tried before that you’d recommend?

    • Megan

You can try urban decay setting spray! It’s just a little pricey.. Ben nye has a great one its supposed to make your makeup last since it was created for stage makeup.. It’s has a slight minty sent to it but if you don’t mind that try it!

  • Quinctia

Similar to what Danii said, when I run out of UD All Nighter again, I might buy one of these and…repurpose the UD bottle/sprayer if necessary. XD

  • Di

Well, of course it will be mattifying, since it has alcohol on a second place, which will dry out your face… I’ll pass.

  • Megan

If the formula is great and you like it, why not just get another bottle with a better pump so it isn’t so abrasive? Just a thought.

  • JayVonSweets

I’ve been looking at reviews for the past 15mins lol&everyone has agreeed on the mister part!!! Good thing I have an empty macs fix+ bottle laying around!

  • Abby

I know this is a setting spray, and it’s keeps your foundation and stuff in place, but does it make your eye shadow, mascara, liners stay in place like primer?

  • Linda

I bought the NYX setting spray and poured it in a UD setting spray bottle…and…..SAME HEAVY MIST!! I couldn’t believe it! So I poured the rest of the NYX in an ELF setting spray bottle…and….SAME HEAVY MIST! So it must be the product, not the spray bottle. It’s just heavier somehow, I guess?

  • sophia

I jus saw this review and I have already made my order. But need to know if it can be used on the face befrore the application of foundation and powder. Thanks

  • smita roy

Aah…just got the nyx setting spray in the dewy finish…I so agree wid u on the stream of mist part and skin feeling tighter after the spray..bt my biggest issue with it is that I feel it makes my foundation oxidise n I hate that…I used it thrice to check n recheck but same results…so m sure its the spray…I m using lancome teint miracle fr the reference…

  • Beverly

Great review, i’ve been looking for the ideal setting spray as well! I did however notice that the bottle says it’s MAde in PRC, which stands for People’s Republic of China. I try to stray away from any makeup products not made in the US since they do not practice safety regulations and we’re using it allover our face!

  • Kyra

I just bought this tonight and I have yet to use it. After reading this review I became weary because I paid $12 for the 2oz bottle, Yikes. But I tried to spray it and mine mists and is perfect when I had put foundation and concealer on my hand. It’s stayed for quite a while, like 3 or so hours now?
