Hard Candy Poppin Pigments Review & Swatches

Hard Candy Poppin Pigments

Hard Candy has a new collection of Poppin Pigment vials that launched for Spring. Like I freaking need more pigments. At one time in my makeup life I had to have every SINGLE shade of MAC Pigment every made. I have a drawer completely dedicated to them. This is why I avoid…ABSOLUTELY avoid mineral makeup. Because I cannot control myself when it comes to loose pigments in an array of gorgeous colors.

I see them on Etsy, I browse Meow Cosmetics, and all those other E-tailers and suddenly I go into WANT mode. Want mode is kinda like a rabid animal. Foaming mouth, wild hair, bugging eyes, and a credit card. It’s so bloody dangerous! People could get hurt!

Reader’s always ask me, “Hey, why don’t you cover indie makeup brands and minerals?” Because I HAVE NO CONTROL. I’d be broke trying to collect all the shades these people put out. And forget about the fact they do collections as often as MAC does. Someone HOLD ME I’m starting to get twitchy.

However, I do have some room in my stash for Hard Candy Poppin Pigments and thankfully they have irritating packaging so I’m not inclined to go traipsing through the Walmart aisles pushing people aside so I can grab all eight shades.

Hard Candy Popping Pigments are a duo of shimmering loose pigment eyeshadows available in eight shades for six dollars each. Each vial is a tiny 1.8 g vial.

I tried the shade selection Golden Pancakes. Did anyone squee over that name? I did. This a duo of a warm light brown and a golden shimmering melon.

Hard Candy Poppin Pigments Swatches

These are finely milled powder pigment (no chunky flakes here) with a healthy dose of sparkle and a sheerer formula. They are actually an awesome product for color washing lids with a pretty bit of sparkle. I loved the formula as it was soft and silky and had a pretty bit of sparkle to them but nothing TOO overly done! We aren’t talking about a vial of glitter here just a bit of silver sparkle in the mix after blended out!

Now the problem…

Hard Candy Poppin Pigments Spring 2013

Each vial features a small spout with sifter. I found it incredibly difficult to work with. To use I had to sprinkle some on the back of my hand and swipe a brush through it. This was wasteful as I kept having to repeat to build as the brush wasn’t picking up much from my hand. You can remove the small sifter (it’s a tricky but can be done) however, it makes it even messier as you can’t really wriggle a brush in the smaller spout. So technically getting the shadow out of the vial is kinda impossible.

MAC used to do a similiar pigment vial but at least you could fit a brush into it and tap off excess. This vial is far tinier.

Hard Candy Poppin Pigments Face of the Day

Sad sigh!

If you’re willing to put up with the packaging the formula is quite lovely. It blends easily, has a nice hint of color, and is cheap as day old chips for two shades in one package. On the down side the packaging is a bit flawed and challenging to work with.

These are launching exclusively at Walmart and Walmart.com for Spring.

Anyone try them yet?

More importantly (for those of us lipstick obsessed) – what are you wearing on your lips?! It’s gorgeous!!!
Thanks for the review on these pigments. I’d make such a mess trying to carefully sprinkle a bit out, LOL!!

I don’t mind the packaging at all! I find that ANY loose pigment packaging is messy when I fumble with it, so it’s kind of a fact of life. 😛 You should review some Meow Cosmetics shadows, if you have some! I’ve been interested in that brand for a while. Also, have you heard of Shiro Cosmetics? http://www.shirocosmetics.com/catalog.htm They’ve got some really awesome geeky makeup, like a Hobbit collection, Pokemon, Death Note, Hunger Games…it’s amazing!! I’ve been lemming some of their colors really hard, so I’ll probably end up splurging on a ton of samples sometime. 😀

I’m a big fan of Meow, especially their blushes. I have a ton of them. Definitely recommend. 😉

Btw, I love how these look on your eyes. It’s such a soft pretty warm glow on your lids, which is my favorite kind of eye look. 😀

Hmm. Could you tap a little into the cap, maybe?
I wanted to try some of these, but I don’t need more piggies that I don’t use due to poor packaging…

    • the Muse

it has a wider rim so you can’t really tap into it simone, makes a mess also brush won’t fit into the tiny cap due to the wide rim around it 🙁 damn!

      • Simone

        Boo! How annoying!
I think I’ll grab the duo with the sky blue shade and quickly run away from the display!
I’m the same way as you when it comes to loose pigments (gotta catch em all!), so I suppose it’s for the best these are more of a hassle than they’re worth!

Packaging seems to be a major issue for drugstore pigments. I had the same issues with the new NYC ones. I repotted them and adore them though. Walmart sells little jars with screw on lids in the travel section of the pharmacy super cheap. Took about a minute to shake them into a new container.
