Maybelline Shady Shores Color Tattoo Eyeshadow Review & Swatces

Maybelline Color Tattoo Eyeshadow Shady Shores

Shady Shores is one of eight new limited edition Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Shadows that recently launched for Summer 2013. There are actually two displays in store at the moment that house six of these new eyeshadows and another display which contains two. So do, by all means, start stalking your local drugstores for the swag!

So far, it seems all the shades are a duochrome finish. Technically duochrome finishes can be fun and they have quite the cult following. I’m not a fan though…sorry, don’t kill me, throw tomatoes at me, etc…etc….basically duochrome finishes look one color in a certain light but reflect another or even a variety of others at a certain angle or different light.

Shady Shores is a perfect example of this effect and finish.

Take a look!

At a glance Shady Shores is a bright buttery yellow mmmm kinda does reminds you of a sandy beach perhaps? The color starts out buttery yellow but it actually applies as a sheer wash of yellow which has a pearl white and green refection. It’s really a natural color with VERY little color pay off. It relies on the duochrome finish to makes its statement as the color indoors has a gold yellow reflection but in sunlight it has a pearlish green look.

I was a little disappointed as I’d have been happy with a bright butter yellow but unfortunately it acts as more of a sheer almost glossy color wash. The formula is thinner compared to some other Color Tattoo Eyeshadows I own and I found it difficult to work with as it slips and slides around my drier eye in a rather dramatic, irritating way. I tried applying with fingers and a patting method and also with a brush but I got pretty much the same results all around.

I imagine it’ll make a great base for eyeshadow but worn along you might feel disappointed as the lack of color here and the rather difficult to apply formula which goes patchy and bares my lid as I try to blend it out. Grrrrr!

I hope this formula isn’t extended to the seven other shades released otherwise I’m in for a rather long and bumpy road.

I realize the temptation to haul this is great as hey, we ALL want new Color Tattoo shades but just keep in mind the formula is a bit temperamental.

Good Luck!

I’d love to hear your thoughts and application techniques if you purchased it.

Hey Muse! Glad to read your review even though it wasn’t glowing. But I have to tell you that your review, in combination with the incessantly stupid and annoying Maybelline marketing, is starting to put me off Maybelline. I found out yesterday that the geniuses at Maybelline (and L’Oreal) have made yet another display with two more LE Color Tattoos. Is it really necessary for them to be so difficult and make buying their products so damn challenging? I am way too old for an Easter egg hunt and at this rate, Maybelline is wearing my patience thin. Sorry for the rant but I think you get it.

    • the Muse

hey christina, tell me about it, all this racing around trying to track these things down gives me a headache lol! It seems like they launch certain things at certain locations which makes me wonder if the brands aren’t in cahoots with the drugstores so that you have to go to that particularly drugstore to get the item…! grrr! anyway did you get this? really not sure I’m liking these :-/

  • Christina

It makes no sense to make purchasing these products difficult — and then if you are lucky enough to find a display, finding one with actual product. Can’t they put a display up with more than two of each item, particularly when they insist on doing LE items? I guaranteed would but them — as so many other beauty junkies would — so why the mind games (yes, that’s a Lennon reference!).

I’m seriously at the point of if I come across the CTs (or Infallibles or whatever), fine, but L’Oreal/Maybelline have taken the fun out of buying their products. So no, I’ve not yet come across the two additionaly CTs and yes, I will buy them if I do.

    • the Muse

lol do likey the lennon reference ;-D yes, though, it is true, I feel a little jerked around at times and really don’t have the time to run from one place to another searching this stuff out 🙁 they also had those L’Oreal lip balms that I could NEVER find that display seems like a complete legend…! WTH? sigh!

  • Jen_m_sunshine

Hey Muse! Glad to see your review as I am VERY disappointed with the formula of the new 6! I am actually returning 4 of them and only keeping seashore frosts. The texture is very wet and slippery and actually 3 of them looked similar on me -very bluish purple. The shady shores I cannot pull off as too yellow for me. Wanted to love it – and all of them but will stick with the originals!!! Wish they would do another matte shade but

    • the Muse

mmmm so far I’ve only tried the one but I feared that jen. They have a very slippery formula that slides around SO much when applied. I wish it was more yellow for me but it cast off more of a greenish/bluish white in sunlight which I didn’t find terribly flattering 🙁 I’m glad I’m not crazy…I thought perhaps I was being too harsh so nice to hear you had the same issue with them!

    • Tammie

Yeah, I haven’t tried any of the other ones but I have/adore Seashore Frosts (as you know, Muse lol)…the others all look kind of meh, formula aside, except for the white one which is heavily duochrome which is fun if you like that.

Seashore Frosts is beautiful however, since it’s duochrome in most light it looks like a gold with a pastel teal tint it’s a great way for me to put just a little color in a mostly neutral eye look (I am not a fan of bright eyeshadow on myself, and I love teal). The other colors either seem too sheer or too meh…

      • the Muse

hehe you got your package I see 😀 I’m a little disappointed so far 🙁 hope the other shades aren’t as bad!

          • the Muse

lol I’ll go check ’em in a sec, I owe a few people replies, I had a turn off technology day yesterday lol! was kinda limited on the internet/near pc/phone/ipad ;-D

          • Tammie

No rush, just a lot of gushing I don’t remember so I can’t rewrite here haha.

That’s a good idea to get away from technology from time to time, I should do that…I am way too attached to it, can’t go 30 min. without checking my phone even if I wasn’t expecting anything.

          • the Muse

lol no worries I’ll check it out shortly 😀 don’t need to remember! awww <3 no need to gush was my pleasure to do it. yesterday was such a busy day I just didn't even have a sec to check my messages/email! same here!

        • Tammie

I hope the others are better too, I was planning on hunting them down but not so much any more…I will probably get the white one when I see it because I am a sucker for those things, and I hate white shadow so it’s sheerness is great for me since I only want the duochrome effect…was thinking of maybe getting the minty one even though I have heard it is also sheer but thinking about it all of my minty green shadows are sheer, why do I need to get another??

          • the Muse

me too b/c shady shores just sucks! the white will prob be a nice base. ugh it’s disease i tell ya!

          • Tammie

Yeah it’s a shame, people like color tattoos because they are supposed to be pigmented after all @_@. I am going to use the white one as a sheer wash, I worry that the slipperyness will make powder on top patchy. And yes, it’s a disease for sure. Collect-a-color-no-matter-the-problemitis lol.

    • Tammie

I do think one good thing about them being on the slippery side (at least in the case of Seashore Frosts) is that I didn’t have any trouble with it getting cakey when I put another layer, it just intensified the color. Usually when I try to build up color with cream eyeshadows it looks icky lol

  • Christina

Actually, I left a complaint reiterating my vent to you on Maybelline’s website. Sheesh if they don’t want to be keep steady, repeat customers than I can easily spend my money elsewhere.

As far as those L’Oreal lip balms (I think it’s called the Versailles Collection) I had found an empty display at Target a few weeks back. Le sigh. But yesterday I just happened to see the same display refilled and bought two of the lip balms (a lilac one and a lavender one). The others were too light (I have somewhat pigmented lips and I don’t think the paler colors would even tint my lips) and too weird (really — pale yellow and pale green?)

    • the Muse

lol yeah those colors were way strange, even the lilac/lavender would prob not be good for me as I’d like living dead girl-like but we always want what we can’t have thus my need to get these *rolls eyes* what is wrong with me? Can’t blame you for the rant it really is irritating to have to stalk several locations to find this stuff :-/

      • Tori

I wish I’d read this yesterday, as I walked past a full display with every single color :/

  • Alex

All of these are a sheer-duo-chrome-like finish I think. Personally I like them but there is very little point in having more than one or maybe two, which is good for say- someone like me and sucky for someone like you who goes out of their way to buy these things to swatch and show people to push them into saving or spending and such.

I kept the white one of these and the purpley one [because it’s purple] and I like them, however I use them strictly as colour bases rather than a standalone cream shadow and so their purpose for me is to enhance the duo-chrome shadows I am using and not to look hella-amazing on their own.

I can see how these would come off extremely disappointing to anyone who sees it in the jar and expects to be able to wear that colour. On the flipside I like that these are different than the others, but a mix of solid colours and these duo-chromes would have been something that could have made more people happy.

  • HapaGirl

Hey Muse! Thanks for the honest review. I will also second what these commenters have been saying – trying to track down these limited release LE items is a pain in the neck. The only reason I bought 2 of these Color Tattoos is because I happened to see a fully stocked display at Rite-Aid when I went in to pick up NYC items at 40% off. I’m pleasantly surprised by Cool Crush (is that the name?), because I thought it would crease and look terribly 80s frosty on me, but when I blended it out with a bit of brow highlighter it actually wore nicely and looked fine. Not an everyday look for me, though, as I prefer warmer shades on my eyes.

I also have to rant that I get SO frustrated when I hop into my local CVS or whatever and they STILL have makeup displays up from holiday collections! It’s like they’re afraid of having bare shelves or something. I know it’s not the employees’ fault, but it must be an issue with corporate management. It also means that they get none of the new collections in, so I have to play the hunting game at the “good” drugstores near me. Sigh.

    • the Muse

my pleasure hapa! I know I totally know. I even have friends doing it for me lol! it’s obscene. interesting, I don’t think I picked that one up? OMG my DR is like that, they still have Spring 2011 NO JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol!

  • Dusty

My favorite way to use duochrome shadows is either to blend out the edges of a look and diffuse it into opalescent goodness OR smudge them into dark eyeliner. I can’t imagine how these would work for either task but I keep eyeballing them anyway! LOL! I wonder if these would go over cream blushes well to add a duochrome shine to the skin? Hmm… NO! MUST. NOT. BUY!

    • the Muse

oooo on cheeks that’s a thought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! on eyes they suck hard even I tried blending out they just go all patchy and reveal my lid :-/ blah! totally not winning with this formula!

  • blueraccoon

i collect these so I have to have them all even if I’ll never use them, it’s a thing. *hangs head* I was lucky enough to find the first six, and in fact found them again to buy for a friend, but I haven’t found the other two and I so agree that maybelline shouldn’t make this so difficult. It’s ridiculous, especially for LE items and products that they *know* will be popular. I’m still looking for the other two because again, compulsive collector habits, but if I don’t find them I’m not going to go nuts over it.

  • Courtney

I want that Seashore Frosts. Of course, we’ll probably get them in June. Lol. The chocolate CT from Fall last year kind of goes wonky on me a lot. I try to put it with Bad to the Bronze or another lighter shade, and it doesn’t blend well, and pulls the color up, exposing my eyelid. So bizarre. I tried it by itself as part of a smokey eye last week, and it was ok, but not great. Super annoying. You’d think they could get some quality control here. 😉 Anyway, thanks a ton for the review. I’ll probably try to get that one and call it quits.

    • the Muse

my pleasure courtney and couldn’t agree more, the formula varies from shade to shade they def need to do some quality control with these!

  • DANA

i was soooo disapointed with this shade- the onnnnly one left at my bbb. i tried it in the car before leaving the carpark and almost went back to get back my 3 dollars but felt too embarassed. I used a 20% off and 1$ mc

  • Tammie

In regards to this being hard to find…it just came out and I’ve found that Maybelline stuff will be hard to find at first but after a few weeks it will be EVERYWHERE. I really have only a bone to pick with Wet n Wild because I have never ever seen a Summer LE display from them ever. Not even an empty one.

  • melissa

When the fall ones came out which I love, I got them on eBay for full retail about $7 bucks a piece. This set is showing up for about $12 a piece which is way over my maybeline budget LOL. If I can’t find them locally without a ton of effort then I’m going to pass on them. Oh btw my local bed bath and beyond has a mini Harmon’s inside and they sell the “regular” ones for $4.99 and the metal for $5.99 and you know bbb alway has a coupon lol.

  • Nancy

I am liking a few of these, and glad they finally had them at my local Fred Meyer store, otherwise I would have had to go on a wild-goose chase to find them 🙂 My favorite is the Blue Crush. This one reminds me of Mac’s Gorgeous Gold eye shadow,ty for swatching~

  • Christina

In regards to the comment that “Maybelline stuff is EVERYWHERE” — not when it’s Limited Edition and these CTs are all limited edition!!! Unfortunately I do find the WnW stuff (limited or otherwise) everywhere but stuff made in China is not going on my face.

  • Rebecca

It sounds like they’re testing a newer formula that takes more time to set, which isn’t bad since these tend to dry out. My taupe shadow is almost as dry as putty! In fact, it reminds me of the window putty from elementary school.

  • Pockykami

I have been so eager to locate these the last week or so that I have been stalking the drugstores daily. There are no rite aids in my area, but when I heard that someone found them there I decided to make the drive. It honestly wasn’t even worth the 20 minutes I spent in my car. I got seashore frosts and icy mint. Seashore frosts is the one everyone is lusting after and looks great in the pot and swatched. But on my lid it looks very faded. It honestly looks very very similar to mac vex, at least on me. For reference I am also pretty fair, nc 20-25. Icy mint is just a horrible formula. I really wished I had listened to the muse and stayed away from these.

I also located the new infallibles and the le glosses. The infallibles are pretty good, but the glosses were so sheer. I was so disappointed, because I was really looking forward to a green gloss.

Also, thank you so much for the honest and thorough review. So many bloggers were raving about these and not really judging the product on its quality.

  • Julia

Oh no! I just saw a bunch of new shades at my local WAGs and was going to get them, but now they don’t sound so appealing… I might still cave in, because some of them looked kind of cool. You’d think they would get the formula right already! Oh, Maybelline…

  • gottahaveshades

I bought a few of these, but wasn’t able to fnd the 2 shades I really wanted, Seashore Frosts and Blue Paradise. I’m also really annoyed at how difficult they make it to find these–I really wanted the mossy green one from the fall collection, but was never able to find it.
So far, I’ve only tested out Cool Crush, but that one is absolutely stunning. I had no problem with the formula, and the ice blue/silver/violet color shift is gorgeous.

  • gottahaveshades

The LE Wet n Wild stuff tends to only be at Walgreen’s, in my experience.
