Covergirl Flamed Out Shadow Pencil Review & Swatches

Covergirl Flamed Out Shadow Pencil Summer 2013

Covergirl Flamed Out Shadow Pencils are new creamy eyeshadow pencils that Covergirl recently released. These eyeshadows seem very similiar to CG Eyeslicks but the colors are far more vibrant with shades like lime green and red!

I purchased these at Harmons for $5.49 each and noticed the display had about ten shades available. I’m assuming Covergirl Flamed Out Shadow Pencils are being added to the general catalog at some point and aren’t LE.

I think some of these new Summer 2013 launches from Covergirl are marketed towards a younger crowd.

Let’s take a look!

I admit I didn’t expect to love Covergirl Flamed Out Shadow Pencils and I didn’t but I didn’t hate them either.

These are a chubby creamy shadow pencil well, maybe not completely chubby…..They are not a twist up design so a sharpener is required to keep the precise point. I’d liken them to a number of chubby pencils like NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils, etc…

They have an incredibly vibrancy to them when swatched on my arm but applied on my eye they do tend to sheer out so building is required for the best color pay off. They have a creamy texture yet dense…I know hate to be confusing…but I wouldn’t liken the creaminess to better quality pencils like Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Shadow Sticks, Laura Mercier Caviar Sticks, etc…they just aren’t that creamy a texture but more of a lighter version. They blend easily enough but sheer out as you blend so building is required.

The fantastic part about them is they wore quite long on my drier eyes. Applied at around 6:30am they lasted beautifully until well after 8pm with very minor signs of wear but no issues with creasing. This was without primer too!

I gotta admit they are a little pricey for what you get because there are brands, like NYX, who have these with a better formula, in a wider range of colors at a better price tag…but I had a hell of a good time with them.

I purchased a gold, a lime green, and a red (which is more cranberry than red) and I spent the week mixing and cocktailing them coming up with all sorts of fun looks. Below isn’t a great representation of the red shade as I combined it with the gold to create this really great burnt orange sunset look! I used the gold and green in another look as well! And not posted here, I also used red on my inner eye and a little bit of black smudged into the outer v for a more sultry look! It just seemed so easy to blend shades together, something I’ve never really successfully tried with other shadow sticks! They just played really well with each other and other eyeshadows in my stash.

Overall, Covergirl Flamed Out Shadow Pencils aren’t exactly a new or unique product nor are they a special formula. But some of the shades are worth picking up! I had fun with these if nothing else. I’d suggest grabbing them when they are on sale but not at retail prices….!

They look really great on you! Love that they play nice with each other.

  • Tori

I love the way you blended them… They look gorgeous! Especially the green and gold. I had a couple in my hand ready to buy but put them back. Now I want to go find them again.

    • the Muse

thanks tori! wait for a sale girl….they are a little $$ regularly but if you wait for a BOGO it’s a better deal ;D

  • amy

Red, gold, and green… Hmmmm… Does anyone else have Culture Club’s Karma Chameleon running through their heads, too?

Anyway, that red looks like it may have to find it’s way into my stash. It’s not as truly red as I would like, but it may work as a base…

  • Amanda

These have not been out anywhere around me yet. I’m dying to give some a try!

  • Ari

I got 3. The white frost one, a pink one and a taupe one. I like the white for inner tear duct highlighting only and maybe a bit of browbown highlighting. The taupe is nice but super dupable and the pink didn’t even show up on me so I tossed it. not my favs, but the white is fine to use. Won’t repurchase though

  • Tori

It’s gonna be hard to wait, they’re so pretty! But def worth saving the money lol

  • Victoria

Those look phenomenal on you! I want them now!!!! My ban on make-up purchases is not going too well so far.😉

  • Danii

That red looks very… Orange-y. I have a red eyeshadow that is truly red and that looks rather orange-y by comparison! I will just stick to my NYX pencils, thank you; this collection hasn’t been all that impressive.

  • Cindy Ramirez

Aww I was excited about these! They looked like such fun colors too.

  • Kadie Lee

I LURVE the gold and red sunset look! Super stunning on you! How does this formula compare to Milani’s take on shadow pencils, because those are my all time favorites!

  • Angela

I love the two looks you did, especially the green one. These look really great, but I wonder if it’ll crease on my really oily lids.

  • amy

Well, I found these at my local CVS; however, they only had the neutral shades, both in the pencils & eyeshadow pots. There wasn’t even a spot for the more colorful ones… The neutral shadows are very pretty, though, but nothing I don’t already have, so I passed. They don’t appear chalky, either.

  • Christina

Harmon hzs the full display of all colors (I had mentioned that I saw the neutrals only display at CVS a week or so ago). I had to tell you that, as much as I generally dislike Covergirl, I bought two of the pencils based on your review. If they were a total bust, I would have passed completely, and if they got raves, I would have bought more. But since they were so-so by you, I got the red and the pink to have a try for myself. And since I am OCD, I also had to buy the red and pink shadows. Heck, I had to make that 20% off coupon worthwhile!

hey sis! Happy tuesday! haven’t been in a bit ;-D so at least I get the scoop from you! went last weekend to one upstate and they had the display. waiting on the loreal liquid powder hoping to find it. I’m hoping you like them, let me know what you think! lol! go for it ;-D the powder shadows I’m using this one and must say so far I’m pretty ok with them…! not too bad at all.

  • DerpinCindy

Hi muse ! What’s better ; this one or the Milani Eyez one ?

  • Christina

Little sista! Off topic as usual but FYI I came across the new Revlon lipsticks and glosses at CVS. Picked up three of the lipsticks (I initially purchased two but like them so much that I went back for another) and love ’em. They are sheer and moisturizing, and since I bought brigther colors, they definitely work as a nice wash of color. I think I could build for more opaque coverage, too.

    • the Muse

EEP hey! sorry delayed reply! Finally found them as you know and still have to go back for the lippies especially the coral you said I’d like ;D

  • Christina

BTW did you happen to see Temptalia a few days ago? Christine reviewed the Maybelline blush that we love (the LE coral one) and asked for her readers to send some love to the Muse for letting her know about these things. You must read the replies — you are loved, sista!

And yes, of course I had to put in my two cents.

    • the Muse

oh crap no lol! I didn’t see that 😀 I had purchased that for her and sent it over, I thought it was such a her color, she always looks so damn fab in corals 😀 awww shucks *blush* gonna go look now *hugs ya tight*

  • Christina

I’m so glad I told you! I wasn’t sure if you knew about it, but how cool is that? What did you think? I see Christine posted my comment, too!

And OMG she wears lip products like no one…always perfecto.

    • the Muse

i didn’t see it until you mentioned it hehe! thanks! 😀 and THANKS for the lovely comment 😀 I agree, I swear she can wear ANY shade in the world on her lips and look awesome.

  • laurajean

Great pencils BUT how do you sharpen them. I have the cover girl 3-in-1 sharpener but it does not sharpen them but just kind of chops them up (so no nice point).
