Dior Jelly Lip Pen Review & Swatches
Dior’s Summer 2013 Makeup Collection brings us three new, limited edition Jelly Lip Pens. Yes, tinted lip pencils from Dior! The Dior Jelly Lip Pen ($26) are a chubby tinted pencil with a moisturizing formula and a shiny finish much like Clinique’s Chubby Balms.
Excited much?
I was when I heard Dior was doing these. I said it before and I’ll say it again I love these damn things. Seriously, it’s one trend I haven’t yet grown tired of. And lord knows at this point you think I would have as the market is heavily saturated with a ton of variations.
How does Dior’s stand against them?
Take a look!
If you’re a frugal person these could prove a little expensive. They possibly wouldn’t be if there wasn’t such a wide selection of this type of product currently available. Of course, Dior is a higher end brand and the price point is exactly where it should be however, if you’re a person that “shops around” it makes it hard to settle for a near $30 pencil when you can get similar at the drugstore for around $8 or at a mid-range counter for around $16.
On that note…on with the review…!
I think the name is slightly misleading, jelly? Not sure where that comes into play because for the most part these are lip balm….now Dior does mention that these are made with their exclusive jelly-like formula but I beg to disagree as the texture is not like a jelly in the least. They are most comparable in texture to Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Gloss Sticks and as pigmented as Clinique’s original Chubby Stick formula if not even a little sheerer.
The formula is a balm-y texture with a moisturizing feel on lips that wears around two to three hours. Color payoff is sheerer for the most part but lends a nice bit of tint to lips that is quite noticeable. They lack glossiness or shine but do have a high sheen finish with a hint of shimmer (The color I tried, Copacabana 516, is a shimmering nude mauve). The pencil is a swivel up design so no sharpener is needed. The Lip Pen has no taste or flavor.
I liked the formula a lot but I can honestly say the price tag made me wince slightly. For some reason, I didn’t mind paying $24 for Tarte’s version but Dior’s seems a little uneventful in comparison. Tarte has a more pigmented formula seems to help retain the moisture on my lips longer and just had a softer, slicker texture.
If you’re Dior fan I know that the Jelly Lip Pens are going to be high on your list of must haves and hey, that’s quite ok! I liked the idea of these but after careful consideration while writing this review I realized it was more about Dior’s name on a chubby pencil that thrilled me. In the end, there seems to be far better formulas in this type of product available that are a smidge cheaper as well.
These are available now at Sephora, Sephora.com, as well as at your fav Dior counters.
