Musings of the Day: Do Celebs Influence Your Beauty Purchases?

Kim EOS Lip Balm

Kim K pimps EOS like its her full time job. Either she really loves EOS Lip Balm or she’s being compensated for all the Tweets, Facebook messages, etc….

And hey, she could likely love it because lord knows when I love something I tell everyone about it on every social network I’m on. Hell if I find a new concealer I adore chances are I want to take an ad out in the Sunday New York Times to share it with the world.

But my question is, do celebs influence your beauty purchases at all? Not necessarily Kim but anyone really….?

I think I’d be a complete liar if I said that at some point I wasn’t influenced by some celebrity who endorsed some beauty product or another. I love Bobbi Brown but some of Katie Holmes’ gorgeous promo images have really made me yearn for Bobbi Brown makeup. I find myself wanting to purchase everything she is wearing in her pictures, she just looks so incredibly gorgeous.

I think drugstore makeup is my worst downfall as there are some great promo images they use that really get me to buy makeup. Like Emma Stone looks incredible in ALL her Revlon ads.

What about you?

Do celebs influence any of your beauty purchases?

Or do they just annoy you?

Do share!

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. hmm.. the only people that influence me to purchasing stuff is the bloggers like you, temptalia, and xsparkage (you guys count as celebrities, right?)

    • the Muse

lol love you jaykee but I am def not a celebrity no where near the vicinity 😀 but thanks, totally stroked my ego!

  • Jess

I can think of one particular instance where I was reading a Julia Roberts interview and she was talking about how she always uses arm & hammer baking soda toothpaste. I totally got some and it’s still my fave! I’m sure there were other times I was influenced, what that one really sticks out in my memory! (And Kim is totes gettin’ paid!!)

    • the Muse

jess I remember something about that, I also remember Jennifer Aniston saying she uses vaseline under her eyes all the time..totally made me want to start smearing gobs under my eyes ;-D

  • Icequeen81

Nope at all, I know must are photo shopped, so they wont influence me.
also most of the time those brands they represent are against my values.

  • auroragyps

Honestly, I think Kim K. uses Eos balm because it’s more sexual looking than Chapstick. I mean honestly, with the look on her face and the balm at her lips, is that a Twitpic or the cover to a porn DVD?

  • Jeanne

Yes, celebrity endorsements often influence my purchases. I refuse to buy anything the KarTrashians endorse because I can’t stand them! If Lisa Eldridge counts as a celebrity, I did buy the Chanel Soleil de Tan Bronzing Makeup Base after watching her Chanel video on it 🙂

    • the Muse

Jeanne def def def will buy just about anything Lisa puts in a video she makes makeup so flawless and easy…! She looks incredible for her age as well!

  • Kimmwc03

I’ve defintely been influenced by celebs (but more so by bloggers like the Muse)! I totally agree with you about Emma Stone and Revlon. I also have been influenced by Emma Watson and Lancome stuff.

    • the Muse

oh me too how could I forget her? Emma Watson makes me want to buy everything Lancome ;-D aw thanks Kim, VERY flattered!

  • Caroline

Interesting question! I confess to loving Flower Beauty mostly because they have a lot of great products but also partly because of Drew Barrymore. Otherwise, though, I think I’m mostly influenced by beauty bloggers and my own experiences with different brands. 🙂

    • the Muse

agreed about Drew, they have great products but all her appearances on tv really sold it to me ;D

  • Cj

My beauty purchases are definitely influenced by someone, when she says I need something I go get it! I guess you could call her a celebrity, She was mentioned on HSN a while ago, Her name is Isabella but I just call her wifey.

  • Cindy Ramirez

Celebrities don’t influence me at all, never had, never will! When it comes to my beauty purchases, I review the heck out of them! ;] I miiiight buy a lot a lot of stuff because of a certain blog…

    • the Muse

does this certain blog influence your anime watching as well? 😀

  • Christina

Hell no! If anything the celebrity endorsment almost always puts me off i.e. “there’s no way I am buying anything that could possibly line that bimbo’s pockets any further.”

  • Sara Elisabeth

    Hi Muse,

Sometimes I am influenced by celebrities. When Mario Dedivanovic is doing Kim’s makeup, I am definitely influenced! P.S. have you ever reviewed Nars Radient Creamy Concealer–or whatever the heck it’s called? (The Concealer with a doe-foot applicator)

  • Moon

I am not influenced by celebrities at all. (Personally I don’t like Kim K either). I am much more influenced by blog reviews since they tell me if the product is good. After all, I won’t look like a celebrity just because I use the same products that she/he does! LOL!

  • Cookie

Definitely influenced, but mostly negative. I will not even consider buying a product endorsed by a Kartrashian — which upsets me now because I’ve never tried an EOS balm and had it on my Target list. I also won’t buy any type of aging product sold by someone I know d*mn good & well has had work done. I just about lose it when Diane Keaton starts yammering about fresh and firm skin when we all know her face is being held up by staples and Super Glue. Sharon Osborne is doing a commercial for Adkins diet meals and she had that tummy reduction thing. Isn’t that the definition of false advertising??? They should have to admit plastic surgery or enhancements (weaves, fake lashes, etc). I believe the UK is starting to do just that sort of thing.

Celebrities also should have to admit they’re getting paid to talk/tweet/whatever. Bloggers do and I don’t see any difference.

Ooooh, I love the Emma-s too! And I love most things Revlon. Just bought a Lancôme eye shadow “You’ve Got the Look.” So pretty. I might look twice at a product pushed by a celeb but in most cases won’t sway me either way… But many bloggers will!

Sorry. I’m done. I’m having a ginormo chocolate malt for breakfast cause I had a rough night. I’m a grownup. I can do that. I’m also having white Birthday Oreo cookies for lunch. Have you had them??!! They smell and taste like birthday cake!

    • the Muse

forget the celeb stuff what is this mysterious birthday oreo cookie!? I must try this…! where can I buy this treat? ;-D

  • Blee

LOL I have been using those for a while. Even got my hubby to use one. Tee-hee I think I sent that one to Kim 😀 😀 😀 Okay all joking aside. I really did not, but only makeup junkies like you get me to try something new 🙂

  • Imainline makeup

Will never buy a Kardashian endorsed product. The K.s are all repulsive.
Occasionally I will look for a specific color of lipstick or eyeshadow etc if I see a photo of a celebrity wearing it and I think it might look good on me.
I definitely check the reviews of experienced makeup bloggers before I purchase a new product. I especially trust the bloggers who don’t automatically rave about everything but give the product a careful review.

  • Chynna

No, there’s no point. A celebrity has makeup artists and hair stylists and I think they have more impact on the outcome than the product alone. They also invest more time and money in spa treatments than I ever would and are airbrushed in photos, so I don’t really trust any skincare lines they might sell, either. I also believe a lot of it genetics; they got luckier in the gene pool than some of us did. No amount of makeup, styling product, or skincare will help me beat genetics. I’m more likely to take a recommendation from a friend or a blogger.

  • Kirstie

They do influence my purchasing decisions. I refuse to buy anything that the Kardashian family endorses. A mother producing her daughter’s porno film does not align with my morals and values and therefore I will not give a penny to any company that uses their name to sell products.

While I liked the latest shade of MAC lipstick, I will not buy RiRi’s new color as I also do not support women being in relationships with men who abuse them.

I did start using Estee Lauder because they collaborated with Elizabeth Hurley and the breast cancer foundation.

  • Deb

Celebrity endorsement means nothing to me. They are being paid to endorse, so are they going to give an honest review of the product? Me thinks not. I rely solely on blogger reviews and you Muse, are one of my top three! From time to time, I will read about a tip shared by a celebrity that sounds interesting and I might try it out. But only the kind of tips that don’t involve having to purchase or use a specific product. For example, I once read a tip from a celebrity (don’t remember who) that said she used a stiff nail brush and toothpaste to scrub her toenails and fingernails to get rid of staining and yellowing. I tried it and it worked great. Stuff like that. For me, celebrity endorsement of a product is nothing more than a marketing ploy. I just wish more people could see through the hype and not be parted so easily from their hard earned money.

    • Maggie

Hmm…I would have to say “yes.” I nearly research every product before I buy so celebrities would only have me taking a closer look at a product. But, the brand wins half the battle if I only just took a look, right?

  • kiwikiwidragon

I have to admit, yes I am influenced. Both ways. To buy or not to buy. Lol. Some of its subtle and we may not even relise we are doing it. I agree with Kirsties comment on the MAC lippies. I don’t really follow the Kardashians much but I do feel they are over exposed for what they do, which is nothing.

  • Fuu

Totally. My favorite part of InStyle magazine is the small interview with a celeb’s favorite products.

  • Elin The Cupcake Cat

I am much more influenced by bloggers than celebrities, I don’t just buy a product because I see someone wear it beautifully, I much rather buy it because I read how well this product has worked for somebody who was trying it her/himself.

  • amy

Not really… Although, when Lancôme fired Isabella Rosellini for being “too old”, I stopped buying for several years; for a brand that’s pushing skincare that’s supposed to be anti-aging, isn’t she the one to use? She *still* looks damn good! Using a 20-something is just wrong, IMO…

While I’m not necessarily a big fan of Kat von D, I do admire her personal style/aesthetic, and because her overall coloring is nearly identical to my own, I had to check out her makeup line as soon as I saw it on the shelf for the first time.

As for the Kardashians, they annoy me (although I do like Khloe), but if they put out/endorse a product I like, I’m not going to not buy it simply because their name is attached to it.

  • Olivia

I think bloggers influence me more. I don’t feel influenced by paid spokespeople of brands (i.e. Pink for Covergirl), but seeing a celeb do a tweet or something (even if it’s sponsored) may pique my interest. I think I’m more compelled if it’s a celeb I like or if it’s a look I want to recreate though!

  • dia

I feel like I should start defending the Kardashians??? Which is weird because I’ve never had an opinion on them before. But if EOS wanted to pay me to take pics of myself using their balm, I’d do it! So I guess I sympathize with celeb endorsements.

I can only remember once instance where I specifically bought a product for a celebrity: when Gerard Way mentioned in an interview he used UD’s Gash eyeshadow. Maybe beauty ads need more dudes? If girls in bikinis can sell products to men, why can’t boys in bikinis sell products to me! ;D

  • Dina

I miss the days of actual models rather than stars. I think that vloggers and bloggers are like models 2.0.

  • lil’eve

They will never make me buy anything!!! nevaaa!!! lol but this is the first time i see her using this eos ball. i think Muse is a bigger influece than any star and thats the truth.

  • Mariele

Ssssuuree… I use Ponds, Nivea, and Noxzema because the actresses of old used em! Aside from that, no. I find keeping my beauty advice from 50+ years ago keeps my money in my wallet for the most part. 😉 Every now and then I’ll read this blog or watch Jackie Aina and I’ll get tempted, though!
