Shiseido Anessa Perfect Gel Sunscreen SPF 50 Review

Shiseido Anessa Perfect Gel Sunscreen

Shiseido Anessa Perfect Gel Sunscreen SPF 50 PA++++ recently launched in Japan so I decided to skip out on my normal Allie SPF and try this instead.

I don’t believe Shiseido has every released a gel sunscreen prior to this in the Anessa Collection. Don’t quote me but they have always had liquid sunscreens as I recall. From my understanding the gel line will be available for a limited time but again don’t quote me on that.

Let’s take a look!

Shiseido Anessa Perfect Gel Sunscreen SPF 50

Shiseido Anessa Perfect Gel Sunscreen SPF 50 is a non waterproof sunscreen that protects skin with UV filters such as zinc oxide which provides protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

This is a super creamy highly moisturizing water based creamy gel that contains hyaluronic acid which provides all day moisture. It’s actually more hydrating that my favorite Allie Sunscreen and provides all day moisture to my skin.

It absorbs very easily into my skin and acts as not only a sunscreen but also my moisturizer on warmer days. I think the joy here is the fact it isn’t your typical sunscreen that leaves skin feel greasy or oily or just uncomfortable. Asian brands really perfected the sunscreen formula as this absorbs easily, it’s breathable, lightweight, and barely there. I can’t say the same for other brands I’ve purchased and tried which I purchased here in the US.

Supposedly the formula luminizing pearls to brighten skin but honestly I don’t see much difference in my skin once applied.

If you’re looking for comfortable way to protect skin through the Summer (and all year round) this is a great pick. Especially if you have drier skin! SPF like this is such a refreshing change from what is offered here in the US.

I purchased this item.

I didn’t quite like it that much when I tested it out in Japan… so I went back to the trusty Perfect UV!

And I just wanted to tell you that your site is fantastic for planning major drugstore sprees in Japan! I literally just went through all the archives, and jotted down my shopping list 🙂

hi candy…! I typically use perfect UV myself when I know I’ll be around water 😀 it really prevents my easy tan skin from catching ANY sun ;-D aw thank YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! flattered!

OMG that’s what I did too! Muse, your blog was essential for my Tokyo haul. 😀

How much does this run price-wise, and who to order from? 🙂

    • the Muse

sasa.com carries anessa as well as adambeauty.com 🙂 should be around $20

Hiya Musey! Thanks for this! I’m always interested in new sunscreen products 🙂 Was there any sort of white cast after application? Love the high SPF but if this leaves the dreaded white cast that would mean I have to sheer it out , which would in turn mean I won’t be getting the full SPF 50.

Off-topic: Went to my local Japanese store this past weekend and saw they carry a lot of Asian beauty products. Guess who I immediately thought of?

    • the Muse

none joy 😀 absorbs without any chalky pasty after look ;-D me?! ;-D hehehe flattered!

Thanks, I gotta check this out then! Yes I thought of you!!! I had a mental picture of you surrounded by 4 walls of Asian beauty products haha! You had a big grin on your face BTW 🙂

Thanks for the review! I’m always interested in new SS products. Do you prefer this to the EltaMD UV Clear SS? MUA skincare board really loves that stuff, but I’m trying to figure out which to buy.

  • Ami

would you consider this a face product or a body product? i’m in dire need of an ultralight, high SPF formula for my rosacea-prone face ~ any suggestions?

    • the Muse

I’m not really sure ami….I don’t really suffer from redness. this is indeed for face but becareful as with rosacea you def have to be aware of what you are putting on your face!

      • Ami

so true. thanks Muse, i think this product is worth a try … i generally have good luck with gel-formulated stuff

  • Linda

Does this protect from both uva1 and uva2 rays? Do you suggest it over the allie? I’m debating on which to try first. I am using the shiseido urban environment spf 42 liquid sunscreen and was thinking of trying the spf 40 cream next, but i’m really interested in these gel type now.

Thanks for the insight of this product. I was wondering if there was an ingredient list on the packaging bacause Sasa didn’t have it listed on their website. Just want to know the if this is a good coverage to protect from dark/sun spots. Have you tried the Shiseido Anessa Essense Perfect Screenscreen (light blue one)? If you have, how does it compare? Thanks for your reply in advance.

    • the Muse

sorry connie I don’t have the ingredients. I haven’t tried the light blue one.

Hi, I’d like to know if this sunscreen leaves a white cast? I read another review that this sunscreen did not leave a white cast on them. Can you verify it? Also, this means that this product should not have zinc oxide or octinoxate right?
