Puffy Eye Trend

Etude House Proof 10 Bling Eye Stick

You read that right, Puffy Eye Trend! What does it mean? Puff Eyes are trending at the moment in Asia and I’m praying to the makeup gods that we don’t see it here.

Dude, my eyes are ALREADY puffy so I must be all kinds of a in style if I hit the Asian scene. At the moment a flow of interesting products including the new Etude House Proof 10 Bling Eye Stick are launching in Korea to basically create a puffy look under your eyes.

Say what?

The entire idea of the puffy eye is that it creates a more kawaii look when you smile. This could potentially work to your advantage if you have the right type of eye shape to pull it off. For example, Asian girls look positively adorable with the look but for older eyes you probably won’t have the same effect.

It’s an interesting beauty trend but not sure it is one I’d personally attempt. My eyes are already puffing so placing any emphasis on that are with a pastel shimmering shadow might just make things ten times worst. And I think even if I didn’t have any baggage I’d still look silly creating a faux puffy eye.

Funny enough the look can be created using eyelid tape!

What do YOU think?

Puffy eyes yay?

Puffy eyes nay?

Do share!

I think aegyo sal is cute but only if…
    – it’s natural, meaning not achieved with makeup
    – there’s no under eye circle, dark circles
    – it’s on someone who is 40 and under

    • the Muse

are hers natural though? didn’t she have plastic surgery or am I nuts? under 30 more like ;-D looks sweeter on twenty something eyes not so much on 30 something 🙂

      • alterna

By “her” you mean Sulli? I don’t think it’s plastic surgery, but we never know! But by “natural” I mean it in the “not done with makeup” way.

Song Seungheon, Hyun Bin and Ha Jiwon are all over 30 but they still look good with there aegyo sal!

        • the Muse

yes….i wasn’t sure if it was her natural eye look…she doesn’t really look like she has it very dramatic though in her promo ads. it isn’t crazy the way I’ve been seeing it done. Mmm true but they all look under 30 lol ;D

          • Miss D

I notice that when I use a sparkle eye liner under my eyes that I get this puffy look anyway. It really can be kinda cute, and Muse you’re just a little older than me so don’t tell me you can’t pull off this kind of cuteness…I know you can! 😛

  • heather ann

I don’t understand I will need to see more clips of it!

  • Paris B

There are special tapes and gadgets to allow you to create this puffy eye look. I’m not sure why everyone wants to rock this look that I’m already rocking (thanks, lack of sleep and long hours at the computer) but hey, whatever goes! LOL 😀 Not a big thing where I am now, but a big thing in Korea. They even have a name for it “crouching silkworms” 😀

    • the Muse

lol me too…if they want they can have my puffy eyes…seriously what in the world? but I get it. For younger girls it looks rather cute but def not something I can pull off!

  • LINDARRAGNAR

    Hey muse!!
long time no talk, was in Washington DC checking out American University!
I really missed your blog while I was away, especially the funny “nerdy” posts. 🙂
I am going to have to show this to my older sister she is obsessed with her puffy eyes, and she may get a good laugh out of this!!

I think the pastel shades would be fun even to own as a lid color!!

    • the Muse

hey! how are you chica! How was the trip? Fun times exploring a new Uni! ;-D hehe thanks girl! lol I must be the only person NOT embracing puffy eyes ;D

      • LINDARRAGNAR

I’m great, very tired though and now I get to take managerial accounting during summer school :'(

The trip was amazing, I couldn’t believe how green and hilly it was in the D.C area! Our first night there my sister and I ended up staying in the most “ghetto” section of D.C, lol after that my dad payed for us to stay at The Embassy Suites Hotel right next to all of the embassies!!
It was great, I really loved the university but its expensive (40,000 a year with scholarships) 🙁

        • the Muse

eep sorry dear 🙁 believe me totally can related to tired. aw so glad you had a blast 😀 sigh student loans gotta love it ;-D

  • Icequeen81

I’m amazed by trends, now is puffy eyes. last was used braces, crooked teeth. so bizarre trends, every time. I believe people need to be themselves to stand out instead of follow trends, be unique, that being super skinny trends is also risky for people health.

  • Alma

I actually like this look! I have puffy eyes as is ( cuz of lack of sleep hehe) and I think makeup like this makes it look more cute and youthful 🙂 I bought the cute eye maker by étude house and love it! Now this is next on my list of what to buy from étude house 😀

  • Attika

this is by far the craziest asian makeup trend! *conceals puffy eyes*

anyway icequeen81, totally remember the braces trend. been there done that! here in asia all my friends wore braces in 9th grade (including me), mostly because it was considered cool. some of my friends even preferred guys with braces LOL

    • Icequeen81

No, is a new trend, they buy used braces ( by other people) so they can look good, this is quite different that using braces.

  • Dayse Anny

Naaah! No way I would spend time and $ to creat an effect trhat I pray to see my eyes freed from, puffy eyes are nothing near cute in mu humble opinion.

In the first comment, you asked about suli’s age right? She’s very young (19). ^^

This trend is an absolute no no for me. I prefer invest my money of products to try to get rid of that. XD

    • the Muse

I couldn’t agree more I think it looks adorable on Asian eyes…on my own eyes? no way 🙂 I look bad with puffy eyes ;D

  • Kimmwc03

Michelle Phan did a tutorial on how to create this look. I’d rather get rid of my puffy eyes (due to allergies and being over 25)!

    • the Muse

oh jen awesome pic ha you’re right some look better with it!

    • KatieLuvsKolor

Thanks for posting the link Jen. Nice to see the difference.

  • Marie

Hey Muse! Long time fan but first time commenter 😛 This trend is definitely something that may rise an eyebrow because generally we want to get rid of them and not emphasize them! I’ve seen this trend for quite some time now and I agree, it looks adorable on Asian girls because of their eye shape but not sure if it would suit other eye shapes. I actually tried it out myself and kinda liked it (is that weird?).

Wasn’t sure how to post a photo here so that you could see but the second photo you can see that I highlighted my under eye http://callmejagi.wordpress.com/2013/06/08/sake-for-your-skin/.

    I kinda of like it!

    • the Muse

marie I like it on you! It looks sweet from what I can see in your pics ;-D! You have a good eye shape for it!

      • Marie

Thanks Muse! I say you should try it out, you might find that you like it! ^.^

        Happy weekend!

  • Quinctia

This is more an enhancement of something that’s a normal anatomical thing, it looks like. Not necessarily the same thing as trying to recreate a sign of aging or something. Not that there aren’t crazy trends everywhere, but I can see where this came from and it makes a certain sort of sense.

  • Aimee

It’s BEEN in for years in Korea but it’s spreading everywhere! Heaven help us.

  • Shadia L.

I think it’s mainly targeted towards Asians or people with smaller (squintier?) eyes. The puffiness emphasized the eye and actually makes them look BIGGER–which, as an Asian, I’m totally into, lol! They definitely seem different than eye bags!

On a related note, I had no freakin’ idea that this “puffy eye” thing was in vogue. For years I had been envious of Asians that have that natural…”puff” mostly because it seemed to look really cute on them; guess I can’t be too suprised that it’s now a trend!

  • Fuu

hahaha I read the title and was like “Puffy eye? I bet she means “namida bukuro” / teary eye bag trending in Japan and Korea…” and I was right! I’ve heard that in Korea, girls are getting injections to make the area puffy too! I think it gives Asian girls with small eyes a way to make their eyes appear bigger. It also can give a dolly eye effect. I like it if it is not over done. Like if someone only has shadow there and not on their eyelid, that looks mismatched to me.

  • Angel

Wow, I’m so on trend! Seriously, how is this a thing??? I spend oodles of cash trying to get rid of my puffs and these poor girls want to emulate the look. It’s not cute, on anyone. Don’t get this at all.

    • the Muse

lol dozens and dozens of dollars all these past years to rid myself of puff and I was right on trend ;D

      • Icequeen81

I guess everybody want to have what they don’t have
who is not blond want to be blond even if it doesnt go well with their eyes and skin color
Blondes want to be brunettes or have yet black hair
        Asians want bigger eyes
those with black /brown eyes want to have green or blue
It seems nobody is happy with what they where born with .

  • Cindy Ramirez

Puffy eyes on purpose? No thanks! I do love Asian beauty trends, sometimes they’re so interesting and different! It’s nice to see another perspective on makeup. Whatever floats their boat and works for them! lol

  • KatieLuvsKolor

I think it looks super cute. I would have totally loved this 20 years ago. But I agree with the previous posts, always trying to shrink the puff now. Lol…

  • mulberrytea

Until I read your post, I never realized that I have aegyo sal! Mine aren’t as enhanced as you see on those Korean celebs, but they’re definitely there. Tried to accentuate them today and… I feel weird. And about 10 years younger, but not so much in a good way, lol.

Ps those Étude House shadow sticks kind of remind me of the new Chanel shadow sticks! Coincidence? Similar shade selection, except there’s a purple instead of black.

  • Anon girl

Ugh! It makes people look OLD. I don’t care if you are cute, this before and after was all I had to see. More like before with sleep and after not sleeping for days crying the whole time going on a drug binge. I would still kill to look like the girl though. :/

  • Rosie Posie

I do this! It actually brightens up my eyes on some lazy make-up days. I have pretty youthful features already and smallish eyes, so it’s a neat way to worth with what’s already there. Don’t knock it til you try it!

  • Jennifer

All of the dough I spend on balms, creams and concealer to hide my dark puffy eyes and I was a fool! It’s sexy to rock the “I haven’t slept in a week so I drank a pot off Coffee” look..
    Next up.. Stick on zits!
