Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquer Review & Swatches

Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquer

Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquer aka Apocalips Lip Lacquer as they are referred to in the UK are now available in US drugstores. Show Off Lip Lacquer is available in a range of fourteen shades and is a liquid lipstick slash gloss with full color coverage.

These are an exciting release as it seems like we’ve been literally awaiting their arrival on US shores for ages now. We also happened to get a bigger range of shades as the UK release only has eight colors available.

These are in special displays at the moment but they will become part of the Rimmel general catalog display later this Fall.

Let’s take a look!

I’ve heard and read that Rimmel Show Off Lip Lacquers are available exclusively at Walgreens but I can’t confirm or deny this because I noticed Drugstore.com sells them as well which leads me to believe at some point they will be available at all drugstores.

Show Off Lip Lacquers (or also as they are known in the UK, Apocalips) are a liquid lipstick with incredible pigmentation. I’m hearing a range of raves across the board for these but I had my issues with them which I’ll share in a second.

I know a few reader’s expressed horror these weren’t sealed or shrink wrapped but you can tell if someone messed with them prior to a purchase. Each lipstick has a small pocket at the top of the opening. If you open it and the area is filled with the lipstick that means someone tampered with it already. If the area is clear that means the “seal” hasn’t been broken”. When you pull the wand up into that small area or pocket it will fill with the product and make a small clicking sound. The “pocket” area also allows the sponge tip applicator to saturate with the product easily which results in more color on lips!

These have a silky, soft formula with a long lasting semi-matte finish. These have excellent pigmentation and provide full color pay off at a single application which deepens with further application. They apply beautifully and have a softer, silkier feel that’s almost satiny on dry down. ALL the shades I tried were fully opaque on a single stroke, no building needed.

Rimmel promotes these as neither a lipstick or a gloss but bigger than both. I’d say it leans towards being more of a liquid lipstick than anything else as it lacks the shine and glossiness of a lipgloss product. They feel very lightweight on lips but they provide no real moisture or hydration which is one reason I dislike them. Because as the wear progresses I feel like my lips become drier which leads to the product becoming tighter around my mouth. I can easily add a little clear gloss on top to freshen them up and this actually works to my advantage as I find the wear more comfortable with gloss on top but I shouldn’t have to do this, you know what I mean?

The wear time is impressive at around four hours however, as I mentioned above I wasn’t comfortable wearing them that long due to the dryness I experienced. As they begin to fade at hour four you’ll notice they leave a staining effect behind which isn’t messy but quite lovely.

At $4.99 each they are a beauty budgeters dream product. Liquid lipstick with this much pigment for five dollars each? Unheard of. I am going to do something I rarely do when I dislike a product…I’m Muse Approving these. Because although I wasn’t particularly keen on them I think they will have a certain fan base that will adore them. If you like liquid lipsticks I’m positive you’ll enjoy these as they are on caliber with brands like Korres Liquid Lipstick and others. I personally feel they are a bit on the dry side for myself but I can see them becoming a very popular product as they pack a good deal of awesome into a budget price.

If you tried Show Off Lip Lacquer already I would love to hear your thoughts!

Do share in the comments.

These are available now at Walgreens (that’s the only place outside of purchasing online at spots like Drugstore.com that I’ve had the pleasure of seeing them).

I like them! I was impressed with how long they last on my lips because no drug store lip product lasts on me for even an hour! I have three of them, Stargazer is my favorite- it’s beautiful nude brown with shimmer, I think you’d like it Muse!

    • the Muse

hey agata ;-D have to check it out thanks for the shade rec chica!

  • Candy

If I knew that these would be released in the States, I would have waited for more swatches instead of jumping in right away and buying from ASOS! I’m not a fan of it, especially the scent (yuck), but the pigmentation is incredible. That said, because of the pigmentation, I find it terribly difficult to wear Luna – wish I waited for your swatches so I would have purchased Aurora/Celestial instead!

  • Jen_m_sunshine

I love these! I picked up Comet, Celestial and nude eclipse. I really like the coverage of these and think I may grab 1 or two more shades based on the above picts!

  • Heidi

How strongly are these scented? There are some pretty colors here, but some Rimmel lipsticks have too strong a scent for my tastes.

    • the Muse

it’s kinda a rosy fragrance and taste with a little cardboard…I’m crazy but that’s what I get 😀 It’s not terribly fragranced/flavored though, more subtle to my mouth/nose

  • Clio

I really like the last few colours! They look very, what’sthe term… “not fake”? I never have a problem with drying formulas. I figure that’s the price you pay for longwearing formulas. When people whine that products aren’t moisturizing AND longwearing, I think “What do you want, MAGIC?” Even if the products boast amazing claims, ADVERTISERS LIE. Their only job is to take your money.

  • Christina

I just bought a shade you didn’t swatch (303 – Apocalyptic, a hot red-pink), and I see that Solstice & Aurora will soon be joining it.

  • Cindy Ramirez

Oh joy! These are lovely, I can deal with any problems for 4.99 ;] Luna and Aurora are so purdy!

  • dtan0914

I’ve been wearing Aurora a lot, but do have to agree with you on the dryness factor! I just worked at a warehouse sale over the weekend and although it lasted most of those 12 hour days, the dryness definitely was a huge issue. I even used a fresh sugar lip treatment before application and it still got super dry after about 4-5 hours.

    • the Muse

I tried it with balm too but I find it best with clear gloss on top. it really goes dry after a while and cracks on my lips, no feathering or migration thankfully but still that rather unpleasant tight feeling :-/

  • Alyza Rae

I don’t think they’re Walgreens exclusive, I spotted them last week at my local Walmart.

  • Ruby

I love how Celestial looks on you… not so much on me! On me it turns into a really bizarre berry color, so, yeah. I love the formula, but that color is bad. And the scent. That’s bad too.

  • mariah

I bought nude eclipse and when I wear it, all the product somewhat migrates to the inner corners of my mouth and looks so gross. it looks like seperated and flaky and dry. I really want to love these 🙁 do you have any tricks?

    • the Muse

hi mariah, perhaps balm under it? I didn’t have migrating issues but it did get tight and looked flaky 🙁 even with balm under it unfortunately 🙁

  • charlotte

I know you don’t like them.. but Aurora was gorgeous on you.

Do they transfer? That’s my pet peeve and why I only wear my HG Maybelline 24hr lipcolors. If not I may give them a try.

I find plain old chapstick works best for adding moisture without affecting the wear time or performance of my long wear lipsticks. I keep one everywhere lol.

    • the Muse

aw thanks charlotte! 😀 on a cup you mean? not much….the kinda set to a drier finish so they don’t really transfer.

  • Jen

I need to hit up Walgreens SOON. I was wondering why I couldn’t find these anywhere. I want to try one or two… or three.

  • mkdallas

So glad to see your review! I bought 3 of these (Comet, Celestial and Luna) and while I think they are superb in terms of pigmentation, each shade is just a tad too intense for me when worn on their own. I’ve been softening the colors by adding a thin layer of NYX Lip Butter gloss in Creme Brulee and it has proven to be a great solution. The gloss mutes the intensity and also negates the drying effect. With the two products worn together, I’ve consistently gotten 4-5 hours wear (with drinking from a straw but no eating), which I think is exceptional.

  • Jackie

I can’t stand the smell of these so the one I bought (celeste) is languishing in my gloss bin. Same smell as the matte lipsticks. Like old teabags.

  • Turcu Roxana

Aurora looks amazing on you. Thank you for the review, I’ll get one for myself now, it helps seeing it on somebody else first. 😀

  • Missy

I picked up “Apocalyptic” (my personal favorite) and “Aurora”. The color payoff is phenomenal! I did have to use gloss for moisture on top. I did a test run and they didn’t dry too terribly bad but I always need more moisture. Mine (purchased at Walgreens) did have a sticker on the seam, so while not completely shrink-wrapped, they would show if they were opened. And your tip about the “well”was great too! I may have to go back for more! Thanks for the review!

    • the Muse

my pleasure missy! glad you are loving on these ;-D and you’re right they do have a smallish label on them.

  • Meg

I picked up Celestial, Nude Eclipse, and Apocalyptic. Love them but I think they smell exactly like Freeman’s Cucumber Mask which is really weird lol!

      • Melissa

Np! My friend (read: my drugstore makeup enabler) works for Walgreens. If you see something at Walgreens it will likely be on drugstore.com too! 🙂

        • the Muse

i had no idea walgreens/drugstore.com were one in the same! I’ll tell you one thing I like drugstore.com’s prices a lot better 😀 walgreens is a little pricey $$

  • Ashley

Considering their respective prices, which would you recommend, this or the MUFE Aqua Rouges?

    • the Muse

It’s kinda two different products. Are you looking for a long wearing lipstick? If so the Aqua Rouges. Do you want a pigmented liquid lipstick with a shorter wear? These would be great although I find the texture drier.

      • Ashley

Then I’ll definitely check out MUFE. I’ve recently gone back to lip products after buying 3 blushes and 2 bronzers. Damn cycles.

  • K

Luna looks amazing on you! I don’t think it would look good on my skin tone though :/ I might pick up Big Bang and Aurora instead. The drying factor is a little worrying. Maybe primer and lip balm underneath to make it last longer? That’s a lot of layers though…

  • Lily

I got Stellar recently and was super impressed. It felt really light and moist on my lips. The color was fantastic and last so long I was literally like, it’s still there?! Lol. I really want to get more colors – especially Aurora, Big Bang, and Apocalyptic. 🙂

The one problem I’m having is finding tubes that have not been “tested” by people in the drugstores. :/ I am really glad that so many bloggers posted about the tell – how the chamber between the tube and where the doe foot comes out fills up with product if it’s been used.

I had to go to 4 different Walgreens before finding a single unused tube of any of the shades I wanted (Stellar). I actually took all the used/opened/tested tubes up to the security guard and explained that they had all been used and should be removed from the floor (11 tubes!). I am happy to say the used tube were not returned to the floor but am unhappy to say that they have yet to restock. At least they aren’t L.E.!

  • Jaquelynn

These all look greaaaat on you (‘:
but iwanted to know which ones would you recommend would look best on my medium/dark skin ? (:
ireally like Solstice & Comet *:

  • k

Hey I know this post is old but I thought I’d let you know it did say in a recent Walgreen’s flyer that these are Wag exclusive. The reason they probably sell them on Drugstore.com is because Walgreen’s bought out and owns Drugstore.com and Beauty.com, just for a heads-up.

  • Sarai

I just picked these up at my local walgrens>. THEY WERE 50% off so excited! The sale is on all Rimmel products until the 15th.. Not sure if it applies to all walgrens but just a heads up! Need to go back for more colors now that I see how they look on. 🙂 Thanks Muse!

  • Tiff

I also have problem with this lip lacquer drying my lips out, but I can’t find any other drugstore lip product that has orange shade like Luna. A lot of them are too light(nude) or way darker (which turns into red orange on my very pigmented lip 🙁

    • Isabella Muse

have you tried the new Revlon Stains? they have a really bright orange that’s quite pretty and the formula is very hydrating 🙂

      • Tiff

Are you referring to Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Mischievous by any chance?

      • Tiff

I posted a comment a few days ago but somehow it is not here anymore :”|

Anyway, I was just trying to ask if you were referring to Revlon ColorBurst Balm Stain line 😀 Revlon also has Smoked Peach/Jungle Peach. I wonder if they are pretty close to Luna.
