Freeman Star Fruit Purifying Facial Paper Mask Review

Freeman Star Fruit Purifying Facial Paper Mask

Freeman Star Fruit Purifying Facial Paper Mask ($1.99) is one of three new facial sheet masks that were recently introduced to the permanent line of Freeman Skincare products. You might recall I already reviewed the Blue Agave formula of these masks.

Although the Star Fruit formula isn’t for my skin type I decided to give it a whirl anyway and give you a few thoughts about it.

The Freeman Star Fruit Purifying Facial Paper Mask is for more stressed out skin types that need soothing. Breakouts, irritations, redness, this mask is formulated to calm skin with Lavender and Niacinamide to help balance out oil production and tea tree to prevent further breakouts. It also contains Witch Hazel which helps to refresh skin and reduce the appearance of pores.

One of my issues with the original mask I tried is I didn’t like the fiber the mask was created with. It’s paper thin and has a bit of a scratchy feel. I find these sheet masks aren’t as saturated with essence as Asian sheet masks nor are they as soft to wear.

Considering the market for sheet masks in drugstores is virtually nonexistent Freeman has a fairly good market niche they can peg especially at the very budget friendly price of a mere $2 a mask. However, the masks need a slight improvement in the fiber used and the amount of product they contain to make for a good pick.

The mask is meant to be placed over your face and worn for 10-20 minutes. It has cut outs for your eyes, mouth, and a slight slit for your nose. Star Fruit apparently aids in preventing acne and oil skin. I had a bit of excess oil when trying it a few weeks ago as I tend to get a little more oily in the Summer months.

The mask was actually a bit irritating for me and made me itchy. This is highly unusual for me as my skin is bulletproof! I rarely get flare ups or break outs from new skincare products. It tingled slightly and after using it my lower neck felt a bit itchy where the essence had dribbled down slightly.

Thankfully I didn’t break out but I did experience weird itchiness. I definitely tightens up skin after use so I wouldn’t recommend it for those with combo or drier skin as after use your skin will feel tighter and stripped of oil.

Overall, Freeman Purifying Facial Paper Mask are shaping up nicely but they need a bit of work to gain my full approval…..! These formulas aren’t quite working out for me and not delivering the results I get using Asian sheet masks. A little reformatting on the fiber used when creating the mask and a bit more essence might solve the problem and make them a ready pick for those who can’t readily find sheet masks in their area.

Tried these?

Do share!

    I used this tonight!!!

It was okay… I found it actually stung my eyes (no, I didn’t get it in my eye…) But The eye holes were very small and i had to rip it a bit to get the serum away from my eyes so it wouldn’t sting.

It was a “meh” product for me and I probably would not purchase.

I experienced the same thing. My skin doesn’t really break out anymore(knock on wood) but this mask actually gave me a few blemishes. I think it was just not suited for my skin type.

That’s so funny! I just received this today in my ipsy glambag! Thanks for the review! I hope it doesn’t irritate my skin.

I haven’t tried the starfruit mask yet, although I will eventually since I received it in my ipsy bag this month, but I have tried the blue agave one. I guess one of my moisturizers has hyaluronic acid in it & I just didn’t know, because it burned my face & that usually NEVERRRRR happens to me! Mine had lots of serum, There was quite a bit left in the packet after I took the mask out, so I poured it into my palm & smoothed it on my face. I didn’t leave it on as long as the pack said, but my face felt nice afterwards, the burning sensation didn’t stick around. Are we supposed to moisturize like normal after using this? I did, but since it’s used after cleansing, is moisturizing, & you don’t rinse it off, I guess you don’t have to…
I did want to tell you though, that not all the Freeman paper masks are like these, thin & scratchy! I think they are trying to make all or most of their products paper masks. I bought a mud mask last week, & it was a paper one. When I was looking, I saw many of their masks that were previously plain mud masks were made with paper now. But this one was a red clay, pomegranate, & cinnamon mask, with very soft paper! I didn’t particularly care for it, but it wasn’t bad. The Freeman oatmeal clay mask is AMAZEBALLS though, I lean towards oilier skin, & it sucks out everything from my pores & leaves my skin soooo soft & clean! I buy it in the big tube instead of the little packets! I love how they sell the packets though, it lets you try the product before spending money on a larger size. Freeman is a WONDERFUL, amazing, GREAAATTTT brand, & I will always love their products, even though some aren’t quite as lovely as others.

no kidding amanda…ha! I thought the mud one was a cream of some sort…! interesting!

Hmm. From the looks of it, your skin may have been irritated due to the high amount of niacinamide in the mix. Niacinamide is super awesome, but it’s been known to cause some folks discomfort, and given that it’s the second listed ingredient…!!!

    • the Muse

I don’t so as I use it in other skincare products and didn’t have a problem…..!?

  • Miranda

lol They look so silly, I don’t think I’ll try this one since I have combo skin and a lot of products tend to dry my face out!

  • Natalye

I remember getting one of these in a glambag, it was like a clay mask or something but I had to take it off immediately because it was stinging my face

  • Summer Haddad

I used mine yesterday and also experienced the itchy feeling. But overall I really did notice the soothing quality, I have dry and very sensitive skin that tends to be red. And after using this my skin felt great! I would actually recommend this. Can’t wait to try other ones.

I used this tonight and found the eye holes to be too small. I also had a burning reaction once I took the mask off and had to rinse my face with cold water. I have very sensitive skin but I have never reacted that fast to something (other than proactive). After about 10 minutes my face felt pretty good. I have very sensitive skin that is combination, partially oily and partially dry. I recently broke out from make-up removing wipes and I thought this would help. I hope the other masks I got in my ipsy bag won’t irritate my skin as much!

    • Cierra

I also have a burning sensation and my skin was red as if I have a sunburn =( im not sure if its an allergic reaction or like you said sensitive skin, I don’t normally have sensitive skin tho

  • Melissa

I used this paper mask just now and I put it on for about 7 minutes, and my face started feeling like a burning sensation and so I took it off and my face was beat red and it felt super hot. I didn’t like it. But I do have sensitive skin so that could be it.

  • Sadie

I just tried this mask tonight & my entire face is red & blotchy! Whatever is in this mask my skin HATES! It also has a burning sensation to it. I hope that it looks better in the morning. I have never reacted to a skincare product this way. 🙁 I put my skin through the test of sooooo many products & this is by far the worst. Now if I wake up in the morning with the skin of a new born baby I will of course change my tune, but until then boo starfruit. boo!

  • Nashley

I have never tried a paper mask so I did fr the first time and i kept it on for maybe five minutes and when i took it off it looked like i have taken a chemical peel to my face and took off a layer of skin. my face it hot and super red i hope it gets better, mine did statr to burn before taking it off also.

  • Emily

I tried it for the first time today and it started stinging my face so I kept it on just to see what would happen :P. Anyways I have really oily, yet sensitive skin and when I took the mask off my face was red and felt really dry. I have to go to school tomorrow so I freaked out a bit so I put a dime sized amount of the Ahava all in one toning cleanser and now the redness is dying down and my face actually does feel softer and the redness seems to be dying down.

    • Isabella Muse

i had the same issues with most of the freeman paper masks….! really a bad burning sensation 🙁 I’m glad the redness went away Emily! PHEW!

  • Arielle

I’m sad that I didn’t find this post earlier. Tried it and immediately my whole face felt like burning. I thought its the fruit acid so I kept it on for 7 mins. Then voila my face was filled with red patches and white heads started popping up couple of hours later…I believe it’s the lavender that’s the irritating agent 🙁

  • Melissa

Just tried this and my face looks like I left it in the tanning bed for an hour. Every place the mask touched is bright red and burning. I have tried to call the company to see what they recommend for a soother but not one person answered the phone. I have never experienced anything like this and I, too, have used various products on my face.

  • brittney

My face turned super hot and red. My skin was very blotchy and red. I hate it! I have work soon. How long does this last??? I used the blue aguve one.

    • Brittany

My face got super hot Red and itchy too! very strange I look like i have a sunburn really bad ouch!

  • SarahB

I just took this mask off, after a couple minutes. It started burning, and now my skin is red and looked sunburned. I guess it’s not just me. I thought I was having a allergic reaction to it, but I’m not allergic to anything so I don’t know. I hated it.

  • Jody

I just tried this for the first time tonight. I wish I would have read the comments first. It was one for just a few minutes. My eyes started burning ( no it didn’t get into my eyes) my entire face felt like it was burning. I took it off and my face was super red and felt like it was on fire. I rinsed it off and it’s not burning as bad. I sure hope it doesn’t take long for the redness to wear off!
