Hourglass Cosmetics Femme Nude Lip Stylo ($30) are a new selection of nude lip crayons with a creamy, full coverage formula and a satin finish available in six shades that allow for the perfect nude look for Fall.

I’ve mentioned it before but it always deserves a re-babble but nude lip colors like Hourglass Cosmetics Femme Nude Lip Stylo are terrifying for me. I want to embrace a nude lip look but I always look like such a dead girl wearing one.

Let’s take a look at these lip crayons and see how they turned out.

Hourglass Cosmetics Femme Nude Lip Stylo

Hourglass Cosmetics Femme Nude Lip Stylo are an elegantly packaged lip crayon with a twist up design so no sharpener is needed to keep the precise point. Shades were carefully selected by Hourglass to suit a variety of skin tones and give those tones the most flattering nude lip look available.

The crayons allow you to line and fill with creamy, opaque coverage that Hourglass calls a satin finish but personally I feel these are more a matte to semi-matte one.

I adore them. I think with the right eye look a nude lip is very possible even for those of us, like me, who are quite afraid of looking like a zombie in such a lip look. However, they are NOT the most user friendly of formulas when it comes to creating that look. The drier texture really accentuates every single nook, cranny, and line on your mouth. They apply opaque but the finish is sometimes patchy and uneven even showing bare skin underneath due to that patchiness. I personally can’t wear them without gloss. A little gloss evens out the color and creates a very wearable shade of nude for me. However, without gloss my lips look dry and very living dead girl-like.

The best application is exfoliating well prior to use with some sort of lip sugar scrub and follow up with a little lip balm. Apply the Femme Nude Lip Stylo shade of your choice and after application run your finger gently over your lips to get the color even. Now reapply to build color and again pat gently on your lips to even color out. You can leave it as is now or I personally like a little clear gloss on top to make the drier, matte finish a bit more wearable.

I can’t say that Hourglass Cosmetics Femme Nude Lip Stylo aren’t without there issues but if you can get pass some of the problems you might just be delighted with the outcome. The application, finish, and formula is a bit temperamental and high maintenance but I ADORE how they look on and in that case they might just be worth the extra effort.

They are currently available at both Sephora and Sephora.com or www.hourglasscosmetics.com

Nope, gotta pass on these. At this price, it should be perfect right outa the case. There are simply too many other nude crayons out there that look just fine without all the additional work.

oh muse, these look lovely on you! you don’t look dead at all. i agree that they sound a bit finnicky though..

    I LOOOOOOVE nude lips! I have super dark pigmented lips that just.. kills any lip color I try to put on -_- I need a creamy opaque nude lip color that isn’t too brown or too dark or too pink! There’s never enough shades of nudes out there in the market for me…. I always thought some company should make “nude” lip shade in several different tones… and this is perfectly it. I would love to purchase one one day! ;-;

I’m with you Muse, these have too many issues. I wanted them so bad because they’re Hourglass (which I love) and they seemed like they were going to be the perfect product for a nude lip pencil. Not!! I swatched every single one and they were all terrible. Death lips for sure. I could have gotten behind 1 or 2 of the darker shades if they had some shine. But they were so matte and dry, yuck! At least with a little glossy shine, some of the nude colors don’t look so bad and washed out. IMHO, these are a big fail and I personally wouldn’t recommend them. If you want washed out nude death lips, there are far cheaper options on the market.

I actually convinced myself that I love them with a little clear gloss but really we shouldn’t have to add extra items on to make them wearable but they kinda look all kinds of a nice on my lips so I’m living with the dryness. Funny thing Deb is I read a few blog reviews that simply raved them and I was trying to figure out where I went wrong for them because they really are super dry! They market them as a satin finish but no way, it’s pretty darn matte to me! I think glossiness would also make the nude shades more wearable!

I think these look great on you, Muse! I’m not too sure I’m down with the dryness you’ve encountered and for the price, I think I’ll have to pass on purchasing. I’ve been so tempted though! I swatched all the colors at Sephora and they were nice, but nothing seemed to jump out at me. I’ve also always been suspicious of lip crayons, have a fear of them breaking or not providing enough product. Maybe it’s just the chic packaging that’s drawing me to them…

    • the Muse

thanks kasey! oh don’t be! they def have a denser formula so they won’t melt off or fall apart, etc…they also contain 0.08 oz of product so a fairly generous amount and just a little shy smaller than some of Hourglass’s lipsticks ;-D

  • Soozieq

Muse: You look fantastic in them. I too, look zombie-like when I wear nudes but I will look for these at Sephora.

    • the Muse

aw thanks Sooz! you’re too kind chica. I think they are worth exploring, the formula is a bit high maintenance but I really liked that I could actually wear a nude lip look for once!

      • Soozieq

Not at all. I only speak the truf! Haha. On another note, can you do a post on Rosacea? I would love to get all your Muse-like intel on how to manage it (besides prescription topicals). Specifically any creams or moisturizers you or your awesome audience has used? I’m battling it and it’s still a struggle. Thanks in advance!

        • the Muse

hi sooz you’re lovely 😀 gosh I really have no experience with rosacea and what products to use for the problem I’m so sorry 🙁 I’d feel weird doing a post that I have no real experience with. Hopefully someone sees your comment though and can recommend some products 🙂

    • the Muse

aw np but I didn’t do anything. I wish I had recs but my problems are dullness/dry skin! hell I wish I had redness, seems like an easier problem to deal with compared to dryness :-/

  • SirenPrincess

I’ve tried this product on myself. I’m very pale, so a nude lip usually looks great on me. I found the same problem. I only liked it with lip gloss over. And I reached the same conclusion as you–if I need to add to it, it’s not worth buying.

    • the Muse

🙁 same issues siren! such pretty shades and kinda worth the hassle…but oh the dryness sigh 🙁

  • Emahh

Hello ,Muse ,I bought one of these from Urban retreat( in shade 4)..*sighs* I hate it ,an expensive mistake ,truly wish I had seen these reviews and coments first!
Yeah yeah ,great packaging, but,…I am , as it is, very pale skinned and yes defiantly more of natural dead girl look than natural look. These are too expensive to experiment with.No way is the texture satin,it is matte.
I dont have a problem with dry lips, but this sylo felt dry .
As others have done a coat of gloss looks better..erm particularly a coloured one.
On the upside….he colour pay-off fair (though not excellent)
    I would’nt recommend this product.
    ATB all.
    🙂

    • Isabella Muse

yeah same issues for me Em! Very dry! If you’re willing to put up with them with gloss on top they are more wearable but lord knows without they are dangerous! especially on drier lips like mine 🙁
