Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Samhain 2013 Perfume Oil

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Samhain 2013 Perfume Oil is the traditional limited edition Halloweenie fragrance from the Lab that comes back every year! If you’ve felt like up until now that the Halloweenies are just a touch too foody Samhain brings you back to a more soothing, warming Fall scent with earthy notes and just the gentlest touch of pumpkin!

Take a look!

Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab Samhain 2013 Perfume Oil is a fragrance that doesn’t quite work with my body chemistry. It contains notes of damp woods, fir needles, and black patchouli intertwined with the most popular of Fall scents like pumpkin, clove, nutmeg, allspice, sweet red apple, and mullen.

I dislike patchouli but it can be very interesting in some fragrances mixed with the right notes. In this case you aren’t getting a stinky hippie note from it but more of a warm woodsyness that gives the fragrance a slight unisex scent. In the bottle I get mostly damp, earthy woods but on my skin all the earthiness turns to a warming scent with a certain bitter spiciness.

With my body chemistry most of the foody notes and the pumpkin pie-ness that everyone describes remains elusive. I can’t smell pumpkin or spices but only dark warmth. Perhaps the faint note of tobacco in the background or a just lit fire (blame the clove!) mingled with pure earthiness and a murky damp chill of Autumn air!

It goes completely spicy on me as it dries down and turns to a black dirt smell later in the wear but nothing terrible because that single clove note keeps it just on the border of comforting like wearing your boyfriend or husband’s favorite shirt or sweater.

It isn’t for everyone but Samhain is a scent that evokes images of sultry, mysterious Fall nights when the air is chilled just right and the smoke from a chimney catches your nose as you walk the streets and take in all the beauty that is autumn!

I both like and dislike it…It’s very unique to say the least.

If you demand something more from Halloween and Fall than foody, pumpkin-y fragrance, Samhain is an excellent place to start your journey into the unknown.

I adore the way this smells in the bottle, but on me it smells like electrical smoke. This makes me very sad.

I’ve got Samhain in the Pumpkin Patch, which I love. I’m thinking it may lean a bit sweeter or it just works well with my body chemistry, as at the end of wear I smell sweet pipe smoke and chewy brownies. It’s wonderful 🙂
