L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara Review

Voluminous Butterfly Mascara

The new L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara fluttered into my clutches earlier last week! Looks like L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara is starting to pop up in drugstores now as originally it had an early release at Walmart. I located mine at Harmons and recently saw a display at CVS as well.

Although I don’t have a great track record with L’Oreal Mascara I did want to check out Voluminous Butterfly Mascara for myself.

Here are my thoughts!

L'Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara Winter 2013

L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara comes equipped with a special wing tip brush which concentrates on the lashes towards the outer corner of your eye. This little winged tip pulls those shorter lashes upwards and out for a fluttery effect.

Doll-like lashes are a common trend in Asia and the US is just catching onto that look. Fluttery lashes can be very flattering plus a formula that’s lighter and doesn’t give lashes that dreaded stiff, crunchy texture is a plus. The general idea of this mascara is to provide a fluttery effect but also to pinpoint the lashes at the outer corners of your eyes giving them a winged out effect. The formula contains cocoon-like fibers that wrap around lashes for a flutter effect. Apparently the formula is supposed to act to extend lashes as well as voluminize them.

L'Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara

I’ve practiced quite a bit with this mascara and wasn’t completely impressed with the effects. It does give fairly good length and I’m really seeing the winged effect towards the outer corner of my lash line. The formula is heavier for something that promises fluttery lashes but does not make lashes stiff or crunchy. It has a fairly good wear without smearing or smudging throughout the day or flaking. I expected a bit more volume where as this produces more of a separated lash look with length. There’s some flutter here but the brush itself seems gimmicky to me as it ends up distributing more mascara towards the outer lash line but the inner lashes end up getting very little which results in shorter, spare, separated lashes towards the inner lash line and more length at the outer end. The could potentially look rather cool but as you can see it my before and after photos it isn’t really all that great a look and my lashes look a little sad and lacking towards the inner part of my eye.

If length, some flutter, and separated lashes are what you seek L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara will bring it. However, if you’re looking for volume, length, and a fluttery lash effect or even dramatic lashes, well, this isn’t bringing too much drama.

Voluminous Butterfly Mascara Before After

I just didn’t find anything special about this mascara….!

I look forward to hearing your thoughts if you tried it.

Available now at drugstores.

I purchased this item.

I felt the same about this mascara, there’s nothing special about it.

I much rather buy Maybelline The Rocket

    xx

  • maddy

darn it! I wanted to get it, just because the brush was so interesting looking and it intrigued me. hahaha 😛

  • Avalith

I love the regular million lashes (it’s my personal HG mascara), and Im excited to try this one out!

  • Lacy

I still really want to try this! I’m a mascara whore… I can’t contain myself, as soon as a new one comes out I always scoop it up to try.

I’m with Avalith – L’oreal million lashes is my all time fav (I’d say HG too but IDK what that means!) and their new version of it, the Million Lashes Excess is awesome with the larger brush! and I will choose them over any high end mascara any day! I’m new to the higher end products but have tried tons of the bigger name brands and haven’t been impressed as far as mascara goes. The results are either disappointing, lackluster or not as good compared to my Million Lashes 🙂 which I even think could be a nice replacement to Benefit’s they’re real – dare I say?

Yes, Million lashes is even better than Benefit’s in my opinion. I have Million lashes (excess and regular), They’re real, and this Butterfly and Million lashes is my favorite. I use benefit for my first coat and I like the tip of that brush for the inner corner but then I top it off with 2 coats of Million lashes.

    Muse,
I found mine worked much better after I left it to dry out for about an hour or so. At first I hated it, but since I did that I love it!

  • Lacy

Muse – you are my muse! I ran out and bought this after trolling online availability at my local walmarts and im on the fence. I feel like the bristles of the longer part of the wand are a little too pliable making it harder to sweep through outter corner lashes bit nothing a little wiggle or extra swipe with the normal side couldnt fix. The left eye looked more winged out than the right so who knows why that was the case….. Over all my lashes still looked nice, long and a bit more fluttery than usual but with more of a natural look to them. If that makes sense. Not as lush and dramatic or defined as I normally like and achieve with my HG mascara! (Yay i used new lingo thanks to lisa!) I also got it in the blackest black but found the color not as vibrant as l’oreals other blackest blacks. Maybe ill have a better review after playing with it a few more times.

    • the Muse

lacy had the same mediocre experience…it’s ok but nothing too dramatic…I expected something more dramatic from it?! I dunno…just not into it…! lol love your new lingo!

  • Christine

When you say “the formula is heavier”, do you mean that it’s a very wet formula? My sad stick-straight lashes won’t hold a curl if I use a wetter formula. =(

  • Angie

I found that after you put your first coat on, if you flip the brush so that the “winged end” is toward your inner lashes, it works amazing and makes your lashes more even. Also, I did let it dry out for a little bit and that helped dramatically. I am in love with this mascara!

  • Susan

I’m so glad I read these reviews & thanks to everyone! I was excited when I saw the commercial & WAS ready to go out & buy, yet now I’m going for the million dollar one! Being a just under 50 yes old I don’t have a lot of lashes left :(… so I’m always looking for a good product! Thanks again and be well everyone!

  • MrsVee

I guess I’m the odd girl out because I actually like this mascara very much. I’ve only been using it a few days, but I love it. I like the way the brush is more of a “comb” and gets the mascara on all the lashes as well as separating the lashes. It doesn’t clump and isn’t sticky. Mabelline Flaired is usually my drugstore fav. I also like Cat Eyes one (gold tube, called Collosal I think). I have the Mabelline Rocket but wasn’t wholly impressed by it. I bought the new one from Covergirl too (in the orange tube). OMG, I HATE it. That’s the largest brush I’ve ever seen in life, don’t buy it! I will purchase this Butterfly one again I’m sure.

    • the Muse

you aren’t odd 🙂 you like what you like and that isn’t wrong 🙂 I’m glad it worked for you!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bay

I use a combo of three different mascaras, firstly after curling my lashes (They are long and thick but stick straight!) I apply one coat of Maybelline Mega Plush, then a coat of L’Oreal Millionizing Voluminous, and lastly a coat of Maybelline The Rocket when expertly applied my lashes look false and by using the gel based mascara first the rest of the layers don’t get flakey all day.

  • Rachael

    This mascara = My HG!

    I am OBSESSED with it.

It gives me length, volume, holds a curl fabulously, seperates, makes my ends ‘wing’, ahhhhh. I just am so excited that I finally have found a mascara that I honestly love enough to give it the good ol’ HG status.

  • Mariko

    Hi Muse!

I have tried mascara after mascara finding that I’ve had to spend stupid amounts of money on a Helena Rubinstein (even through a discount website from China!) to get the results I really wanted. I am half Asian/half Caucasian, and my lashes are board straight, which makes the mascara trial and error research tedious and often frustrating. Long story short, I have to use waterproof if I want the curl to stay in my lashes so I never go for anything but. I had put L’oreal’s Butterfly mascara on a Christmas wishlist (stipulating that I only wanted it if it came in waterproof) and got it with a disclaimer from ‘Santa’ saying try it and if you don’t like it chuck it. So of course I tried it. I absolutely LOVE this mascara!! It grabs the little lashes that often get missed, catches all the lashes at the outer corners of my eyes thanks to the funky brush and I don’t have to scrub my eyes with a brillo pad to get my mascara off anymore! My only regret is that this is likely just a promo item from L’oreal and chances are it won’t stay in their regular line up and will be replaced by something else in a few months. Thus I’m off to Walmart to stock up! ~Cheers!

    • Isabella Muse

Hi Mariko! I am very happy that this worked so well for you! 🙂 That’s great news! Don’t worry it’s actually a permanent product 🙂 so you’ll def be able to grab it for a while 😀 I’m always so happy to hear great success stories! Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Erin

I usually use waterproof “lash blast volume” by cover girl. I have to use waterproof because I have allergies and I hate when other mascara runs into my eyes. I recently grabbed the butterfly in the waterproof version. So far I am a fan, there is no irritation to my eyes and it dramatically lengthens and volumizes my thin blonde eyelashes. I really like how this mascara doesn’t clump! I think the trick to this mascara is holding the brush at the correct angle. ( I also blink as I pull the brush upward this helps lengthen ) I have not tested how waterproof it is yet though so I may change my mind. I wish I could submit my before and after pictures!!!

  • Shawna

I really like this mascara..My right eye turns out beautiful, i do feel because of the brush. But since im right handed, i noticed the only wau toget my left to look the same, i have to be a contortionist so the “flair” of the brush is to the outside…..Unfortunatly my arm doesnt like to bend like that.

  • Therese

Hi Muse – love your blog – it’s been my HG of beauty reviews 🙂 Yes, this does come in Waterproof. I just purchased it today at my local Target. Have not tried it yet – I am a sucker for anything that lengthens my lashes. I use a eyelash curler first then apply mascara. I’ll see what happens with this.

  • Lolita

Hi remember me?? I love your site!! its one of my favourites. (I left a comment asking u about matte lip sticks before. Anyways, its okay if u don’t remember. Do you have any reviews on coloured mascaras?? I’m from Canada and it really sucks how lots of the ranges that are available in the states aren’t avail in Canada. I was so sad that the great lash coloured mascaras never made it to Canada. I love ur reviews. Hope to hear from you.

    • Isabella Muse

aw thanks lolita! I do remember out matte conversation, hopefully I finished it lol because I’ve been swamped and approved a ton of comments before I had a sec to reply 😀 I don’t really have a ton of colored mascara reviews, sorry, most don’t really work for me 🙁 Anastasia does a few and Ciate actually has a new one as well as Milani Bella Blue ones!
