Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm Review & Swatches

Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm 14

Meet the new Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm Lip Pencil ($6.99 at Harmons drugstore) that recently launched in a special display which also happens to include Lacquer Balms. So whether you love a matte balm or you like a glossy one Revlon has you covered with this collection.

At this point it is unknown if Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm is a limited edition product. Due to the limited shade selection I feel like you might see the product for a limited run for Fall/Winter 2013 but might see a bigger release and a more permanent one come Spring 2014. But this is mere speculation on my part….I’m just making big assumptions here.

Either way if you love lip pencils but feel like there aren’t enough available with a matte finish I’m sure you’ll adore Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm.

I located a display of Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm at my local Harmons drugstore (or Bed, Bath, and Beyond) for $6.99 each. I suspect they’ll be around $8.99 or so once they hit mass drugstores like CVS and Walgreens, etc….

These are a swivel up design so no need for a sharpener. The pencils have a minty flavor and scent that’s quite pleasant but might prove unpleasant for those who dislike scented/flavored lip products. Unlike the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain these do not have a luminous, high sheen finish or a balmy texture. The finish is pure matte without any shimmer, sparkle, or sheen. The texture has a beautifully creaminess that glides onto lips very easily. It’s very soft, very easy to apply, and doesn’t tug during application. I dislike mattes by default as I prefer more of a glossiness or sparkle to my lip products but even I can love a formula like this. The creaminess is very pleasant and it wears comfortably on my lips. There’s some dryness here yes but not a dryness that makes the product feel heavy. The formula doesn’t look dry on lips and remains very creamy through the wear. I can get a solid four hours from this and as it wears away it leaves a pleasant staining effect behind. All the shades I tried had intense pigmentation with an opaque finish on a single swipe. The matte finish doesn’t accentuate drier lips nor does it look uneven or patchy. However, one shade I tried, Audacious, wasn’t as smooth and I noticed it kinda unnaturally slipped into every single nook and cranny in my lips. Aside from that the other two shades I tried had a perfect smooth, soft finish. I thought the wear was fairly good and I wasn’t left feeling like the product dried my lips out or tightened up during the wear. They aren’t a moisturizing lip balm style product but they aren’t as dry as you might imagine for a matte product. On some levels they are even more moist than Tarte Matte Lipsurgences. These actually remind me of a better formulated Lancome Color Design Matte Lipstick believe it or not and mind you I actually love Color Design Matte Lipstick so the fact these are better is saying something.

Overall, these are fairly an impressive lip product. I’m not terribly keen on the matte finish for myself but I’m looking forward to trying the Lacquer Balms as those might just be perfect for me. For the matte lovers out there I think you’ll adore these.

They are arriving at drugstores now.

At first I thought meh..then I saw the sultry shade on you and omg! It’s so nice 😀 Gotta get it now -.- I think the colour and finish look good on you btw 😛 (since you said you didn’t like the matte)

    • the Muse

aw thanks IIinca! I really don’t love matte but these are mighty nice 😀

  • Bailey

I’m not always a matte fan, but I’m really excited about these for some reason. Sultry is gorgeous!

  • Tiffany

You had another post that had all the colors listed. But I can’t find it now.

    • the Muse

i addressed in the review clio did you read through? hope this helps!

  • Caitlin

I want to see the new shiny ones, too! Also, Muse, did you see that Stila added a mega-box thingy to the holiday collection? (15 lipglazes!)

  • The Beauty Alchemist

These look fab on you. I am not too into matte either but I need to try these. Of course they may not show up here anytime soon.

    • the Muse

aw thanks D! yeah, not so sure about matte :-/ hope they arrive soon!

  • kathy

Wow, wow, wow. Standout is gorgeous (and gorgeous on you!). Hope I can find some of these before the display is empty.

  • Kimmwc03

I skipped these and bought one of the lacquer ones; I like the one I bought.

  • Meg

Dying to find these and the lacquer ones! Haven’t spotted them anywhere yet!

  • Felicia

I wasnt sure about all of these when swatched on skin but after seeing them all on you I want them all!

  • Mindless wiggles

I saw these at bed bath and beyond last night. The laquer ones all have sparkle in them which I am not a fan of. As for the mattes, I was disappointed there were not any true fall colors, these colors all looked very summery to me.

My BB&B doesn’t carry makeup, and I went all over town today with no luck 🙁 wah!!

  • DivaShop

Personally, I don’t go for mattes because I tend to have dry lips, but since these are called a “balm” I was hoping they would be more hydrating than mattes generally are. I’ll probably just try the lacquer ones. These do look intensely pigmented, which is a definite plus! 🙂

  • Chelsea

I love a matte finish – I don’t love the minty flavors in lip products, but I’ll have to keep my eye out for these.

  • telle

LOVE sultry and standout on you! i will keep an eye out for these and pick one or two up when they cross into north of the border! thanks for teh review! 🙂

  • cat

I have this problem where I am really attracted to dark lip colors regardless of whether they’ll look good on me. When I saw your original post, I was immediately drawn to Shameless, the dark purple shade.

  • Majick

These are getting really good reviews so far. I may try one if they have any left by the time I find them. LOL

  • Cindy Ramirez

Oh yes, this is totally up my alley. I will be attempting to haul these lovelies today!

  • Sonya

Sultry is gorgeous, and gorgeous on you! I can’t wait to grab it when these release in Canada (hopefully soon!)

  • Harriet

Would you consider changing your angle when photographing lip products as we see only a small portion of your lip? Your face is not evenly lit so the bottom of your face where the lip is is in a bit of shadow making your photos not so helpful to me. A small shift in position and lighting would convey about 85% more visual information to your viewers.

    • the Muse

sorry harriet I’m not all that handy taking selfie photos. I thought the photos were pretty clear and well lit, apologies!

  • Rachel

I really want to stock up on Standout now, it looks so opaque. Perfect matte red in crayon form? Shut up and take my money. So glad these didn’t disappoint!

  • Jess

I got one of these in Elusive, a mauve-y color, that I hoped would be a matte version of the Honey balm stain. It was the absolute worst most worthless lip product that I’ve ever tried. I’ve tried everything to get a decent even application. No amount of exfoliating or balm beforehand helps. I put this stuff on and suddenly I look like my Grandma with her old school dry waxy lipstick caked into the liplines. I threw that baby in the very back of my makeup drawer and I never plan on taking it out again. Just the sight of it makes me seethe with rage. Maybe matte just isn’t for me.

  • Kathryn

I bought Sultry today and I really like it. I almost got Standout, but it looked a lot like the Revlon Kissable in Adore, which I already have.
