Blergh! I wish I had skipped it the first time. The quality was just not UD-level.

  • Christina

I can do without the silly bells and whistles but I love UD and the colors are gorgeous. Heading to Ulta today!

  • Christina

UPDATE: It’s a first for me and it’s a pass! What a waste of space this palette is! I think I have all the lovely colors in other palettes and the packaging was just a turn off.

    • Kirstin

I just depotted the shadows very easily by taking the drawer out and taking it apart. I’m going to put the shadows in a MAC palette or something similar. I think the packaging is cute so I have it on display in my makeup room, but I would never haul that thing around or travel with it. I love the shades so I instantly knew I would need to depot them so I would get use out of them. I’d have to store this huge palette somewhere different from my other palettes and would never reach for it otherwise.

  • JoElla

Oh man.. and I just bought the Vice 2 palette. Someone tell me I don’t need both! LOL

      • Quinctia

It seems odd they’d change the eyeshadow lineup and then use the discontinued formula to do so.

I swear the last redux (for BOS 3) said something about those shadows being the new formula, but that was a year ago.

      • Kirstin

I do find that so weird that they would make this palette with the old formula if they had already changed the formula and put out new palettes that included it. I only have palettes with the new formula so I guess it will be interesting to try the old. I just got this as my mom held onto it until Easter as a surprise

  • Christina

P.S. Besides the old formula, the color selection is different! Just do a Google search for the Book of Shadows IV from when it was originally released to now. i.e. Kiddie Pool replaces Blue Bus, Cobra replaces Creep, Gravity replaces Psychedelic Sister, etc. etc.

I’ve got the original BOS4 and there is about half of an overlap in colors. Plus the packaging is a pain. I ended up take the drawer out and that just sits on my dresser, the box is thrown somewhere in a closet. I was actually tempted to take a knife to the half of the drawer that holds the eyeliner and stuff so it took up less space.

    • Lisa

Ha! I cut out the top of mine with an xacto knife because everytime I tried to open the drawer it would scrape the shadows. So now I can access the shadows by lifting the lid, but man it looks jacked.

      • Kirstin

My shadows scraped too!! I did the same thing… kind of. I used an xacto knife on the drawer, easily took out the shadows, put them in my MAC palette, and now I’ll get WAY more use out of it. There was a good youtube vid on how to do it.

I started by pulling out the drawer, flipping it over, cutting along each edge and then pulling back the layers of paper. I then cut away the portion that housed the “extras” and worked on the section with the shadows. You can actually successfully take it apart to the point where you have a square with the shadows just glued to the cardboard (I carefully removed the layer on top/in between the shadows that has the names on them). I used the xacto knife to loosen the glue underneath, and the shadows came out easily without a single crack or even an accidental dent.

        Hope this helps someone 🙂

I just got mine today from Ulta, I paid $20 with tax with my 20% off & customer loyalty discount, Woot Woot. I took the first one back because someone swatched it, yuck, but second one was even harder to pull out of the drawer. I scratched off top layer of several shadows while opening first time & will keep it out now, but still worth what I paid. I put the palette inside a ziplock bag to keep clean & stuck my BH Galaxy Chic & Eyes on the 60’s palettes inside the drawer instead, easy fix. I depotted my last UD BOS & regretted it, so this better work. Anyone else have difficulty with the drawer? Any ideas how to fix it so palette comes out smother?? All in all, I love it, worth the $20 I paid for it & love my hubby for couponing & buying it for me.

  • Krystle

I just bought this at my work and I don’t think I’ve ever come across the old formula of UD, so I don’t know how it compares to the current formula, but these swatch beautifully. It’s an amazing purchase for the price it is (and also with the discount I got hah).

  • Jamie

I got the original when it came out and, while I like it, it definitely isn’t a must-have. By looking at things, it probably still isn’t.
I’m also confused as to why they seem to have switched out half of the colors. Blue Bus by Kiddie Pool, Cobra by Creep, Bender by Grifter, Gravity by Psychedelic Sister, Midnight Rodeo by Sidecar, Crystal by Strip, Bust by Stray Dog, Skimp for Virgin, and Zephyr for the last one (don’t see the name listed).
So they replaced a sparkly black with another sparkly black… and a purple with another purple? Seems weird.
And the packaging looks exactly the same. No way that’s revised. Oh UD. Ya baffle me sometimes.

    • Quinctia

They actually did the same thing last year with BOS 3, the I <3 NYC one. I bought it for my sister for her birthday because it was a good deal. It had a slightly different arrangement of shadows, and only one eyeliner instead of the two in the first.

I guess the removal of Crystal doesn't bode well for it ever getting a single release. It's my favorite damn shade in the palette!

  • Adilene

I ordered mine online and am a first time buyer of any UD palatte. I bought it for the great price but am wondering about the boxing scratching the shadows. Is there anyway to avoid that. Please let me know.

  • Jess

I have the original, love the shadows and still use it quite a bit. But man is that packaging ridiculous. It’s insanely bulky, heavy and awkward and you can forget traveling with it. And yet they design the BOS releases the same way, year after year. Imagine how great they’d be if it was a small palette large enough to fit just the 16 shadows, a liner and the travel mascara. And it’s pretty lame of them to take the crappy packaging, fill it with older non-LE shades and try to sell it as ‘revised’.

    • Kirstin

I recommend depotting them. It’s actually really easy. There was a good youtube vid where the girl showed how to take out the drawer and cut away at the packaging until you’re left with the shadows on a few small layers of cardboard. Then you can easily loosen the shadows using an xacto knife or box cutter. It took me about 10 minutes. The outside box and top with the pop up isn’t damaged since you just dissemble the drawer so I have that on display in my makeup room. It’s so convenient. I would buy any book of shadows that cost $32 even if the packaging is that big because the value is so good and you can so easily take out the shadows. If I didn’t take out the shadows, I know I would hardly ever use them

  • Jessica

Another difference is that it used to come with a card of QR codes that you could scan and watch how to videos on the ud website. That’s why there’s a speaker and a phone holder in the set. But they took away the QR codes and the videos are gone. Weird change. I wonder why…
