Wet n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stain Review & Swatches

Wet n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stain

Wet n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stain is a brand new chubby pencil moisturizing lip color that’s launching in six shades for Spring 2014. You’ll be able to get these now at Harmons for as little as $1.99 (regularly $2.99 each) with a trusty peel off $1 off coupon on each pencil.

They’ll become more readily available as we head deeper into the Spring season so expect them late December and into January at other drugstores (the price might be slightly higher as well).

You know me, I’m a sucker for chubby lip pencils so Wet n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stain is an exciting pick up especially at this price.

Wet n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stains

Wet n Wild Megaslicks Balm Stains are 0.10 oz in size and a swivel up pen design so no sharpener is required. I don’t think they are comparable to products like Tarte Lipsurgence, Clinique Chubby Stick Balms, or even Revlon’s Just Bitten Kissable Balm. The best comparison for me would be to the Hard Candy All Glossed Up Hydrating Lip Stain and Jordana Twist & Shine Moisturizing Balm Stain.

These have a lighter, thinner formula compared to releases from Tarte, Clinique, Revlon, and even Covergirl. The texture doesn’t have the balminess I associate with this pencils which is a refreshing change. The formula has a nice easy glide across lips with a soft, slightly slippery feel as you apply. They do not have shimmer or sparkle of any kind and the finish has a soft sheen with sheer to medium pigmentation depending how much you apply. First application color goes on sheerer but going over the color produces more of an impact and an opaque finish. I did not detect any flavor or fragrance so if you’re sensitive that’s likely a welcome relief. The wear is a bit short for me at around three hours but they do indeed leave a stain behind which lasts for about an hour after so a total of four hours for total wear is what you’re looking at.

Rico Mauve and Red-dy Or Not

They are comfortable through the entire wear but aren’t terribly moisturizing or hydrating but they don’t dry lips out either so no worries on that front.

At a buck ninety ninety I’m not complaining! Sure, I do like other formulas better but these are a nice cheap thrill if you’re on a budget. Or if you’re just looking for quickie color on the go these provide.

Nice stuff!

Great deal!

Tried ’em?

Do share!

I have tried a lot of chubby lippies, and Neutrogena’s is my favorite. They are super pigmented and moisturizing.

    • Susan K

I totally agree Kim! I was just about to post the same thing. Only wish they would come out with some seasonal le shades once in a while to keep things interesting.

  • Nat

OMG Muse noooo! You must stop posting chubby lip pencils, ’cause I can’t stop buying them! I think I have like ten of them now (Clinique, Bare Minerals, Cover Girl), lolz! 😀

    • cat

I say keep ’em coming. Because of you, Muse, I usually only end up buying the best ones. Right now Revlon is my favorite at the drugstore because they’re so pigmented and easy when I don’t want to commit to a lipstick and Clinique are still my favorite everyday balms because they are moisturizing and sheer (and therefore wearable).

I’m in love with jordana twist & shines, so I know I’m gonna like these!

  • Angel

YAY!!! You reviewed the two colors I’ve been eyeing! YAY again 🙂 That mauve sure looks different on your lips than it does in the tube. It’s much more pink than I imagined. But that red will be mine for sure. Hey muse, do you think these are very similar in feel to the Jordana ones? I already have three of those and like them a lot.

    • the Muse

hi angel! 🙂 it is a bit more pink! they are very similar but I prefer the Jordana ones for some reason 🙂

  • AmandaM

Raises hand as a fellow sucker for chubby lip pencils! Thanks for the review-I’ll have to be on the lookout for these. Do you like these more than the Jordana ones?

    • the Muse

I actually prefer the Jordana ones Amanda…dunno why just liked the formula a little bit better 🙂

  • Alyson

I feel like this is a dumb question, but how do these swivel up sticks self sharpen? I have the Clinique one and a pretty expensive (to me anyway $24.) one from Bite Beauty that’s a swivel up, but the point has worn down and really needs sharpening so it’s become hard to use. Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong?

    • the Muse

unfortunately once the point goes blunt there isn’t anyway to sharpener them outside of swiveling up.

    • Michelle (Chelle)

Alyson, apply it most of the time at an angle so that the tip always has a point of some sort. That’s the only way to “naturally” shape it without losing any product to using a sharpener (it’s what I do with my UD 24/7s to preserve every precious molecule, lol). Hope this helps!

What do you recommend for someone looking for a VERY long lasting lip balm stain? Tarte? Clinique? Revlon? Jordana? These WnW ones? I’m lazy about re-applying. 🙂 Thanks!

    • Nat

I can recommend two! Etude House’s Fresh Cherry Tint, or if you don’t want to hunt down stuff from overseas then bareMinerals’ Marvelous Moxie Lip Gloss. Both those products have great staying power, at least for me. 🙂

  • Michelle (Chelle)

Muse, question: Do these have mint in them at all? Seems like most of the pencils out there do, so far the only pencils I’ve had luck with (strictly based on whether they have mint, not even based on color selection) are the Sally Hansen ones. I’m forever on the hunt for non-minty NON-SPARKLY/SHIMMERY pencil balms, and it’s been a tough road. When it comes to lip products I tend to stick to drugstore if it has color because I wear color so rarely (crooked teeth and braces = I’d rather draw attention to my eyes, not my mouth) so I haven’t tried any of the pencils we can find at Sephora. (Last winter I did buy the Bite mini lipstick set that came in the grey altoid-like tin, I’m SUCH a sucker for mini sizes and reusable packaging! And the only time I’ve used any of the lipsticks all year was for my boyfriend’s drag costume this halloween… I still haven’t worn them myself!)

    • Isabella Muse

mmm I believe it was kinda a cinnamon as I recall unfortunately…just as bad as mint :-/ perhaps Clinique Chubby Pencils are a good one for you? Natural color, very pretty and no sparkle/shimmer or mint 😀

  • Carol

I got Lady is A Vamp – while it started out as a lovely dark berry red (MLBB) on me, after about half an hour it turned into *bright* fuchsia!! Yikes!!!

  • Silvia

Bought bunch of these and really liked them! Lady and the vamp is my favorite yeah! Would like to try the Nyx chubby eye pencils they come in an array of beautiful colors but don’t know if you need a pencil sharpener with those?
