Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder Review & Swatches

Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder

Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder is a new Spring 2014 product that will be a permanent product added to the Maybelline Collection. This powder is supposed to give a second skin finish with a creamy texture and a smooth flawless finish that feels like a powderless powder.

Let’s take a look.

Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder1

Available in 16 shades Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder ($8.99) comes in a double compartment compact which features the powder on top and a sponge and generously sized mirror on the bottom.

At a very quick glance Maybellime Dream Wonder Powder almost looks like a cushion foundation the likes you’ve seen from Etude House and Holika Holika.

Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder2

But it isn’t….! It’s all powder once you swatch it. I picked up the shade Classic Ivory which is a bit too light for me so I have plans to return for the next shade. I find most powders aren’t friendly on my drier skin but I make do with a few. It’s rare I use face powder as I’m not oily and I don’t set with it but on occasion there’s a call for it in my beauty world and I wouldn’t say to skip out on this as it is a fairly good powder at a great price especially if it goes on sale.

Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder swatches

The powder is soft, silky, and very smooth with a semi-matte finish and a four hour or so wear time. The consistency is very cool to the touch and almost has a certain creaminess to it. It blends flawlessly without sticking to drier areas which means it’ll likely do well with larger pores as well. The pores around on my nose are completely invisible once I applied. Coverage is sheer so it is a companion piece to a foundation of your choice and not necessarily meant to be worn alone unless you’re looking for something that evens out skin tone, brightens, but doesn’t necessarily conceal issues a more pigmented foundation would. I’m unsure about shine and mattifying abilities as my skin is dry as the deepest corner of the desert at the moment.

The key selling point of Dream Wonder Powder is the fact that it has that your skin but better benefit. The finely milled texture does in fact have a second skin finish so it’ll perfect already great skin and make it look incredible without the silly need for optic pigment blurring rubbish that every powder and foundation seems to use lately. Where as matte and semi powders can be dry and a bit cakey this has a super smooth, even finish without being patchy or cakey.

Packaging doesn’t claim to be a powder foundation but Maybelline says it will provide medium coverage. This is where things get tricky because in my experience the best wear is one bare skin and I’m fine with the sheerer coverage it provides. However, I felt it looked a bit overdone when paired up with BB Cream or foundation. This means if you rely on heavier coverage you’re going to be disappointed that this isn’t pigmented enough to wear all its own.

On an off note I wonder if this will be replacing Dream Matte Powder. If so this is an excellent replacement as the formula is far nicer.

Overall, Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder provides a your skin but better finish. If you already have great skin this makes a beautiful way to get sheerer coverage that evens out skin tone, brightens, and looks all kinds of natural with a makeup-free finish. However, those seeking heavier coverage may find it disappointing. All in all Dream Wonder Powder actually feels and acts very high end so it is worth trying out for yourself.

I’ve tried the Dream Wonder powder and just love it. This powder makes my 58-year-old skin look flawless (and poreless), but the coverage isn’t heavy or cakey at all. I apply it over CC cream (Revlon’s new one), and I’m good to go.

Now, here’s the weird part: I found this several weeks ago during a trip to the beach (at a CVS in Murrells Inlet, SC!) and it’s only now showing up here in Charlotte. Same with the L’Oreal Colour Riche Extraordinaire lip color–I found it at a CVS in Clinton, SC, back before Christmas, but it’s just now showing up in Charlotte. How do the new products get to small towns before they get to a city of 775,000 people?!! That is so weird.

    • Isabella Muse

yay happy to hear it tigrrl! ;-D I know, the release on drugstore stuff boggles my mind sometimes!

  • jenn f

this actually looks really promising and i think they /are/ discontinuing the powder. all the powders were on clearance at my drugstore

  • Lacy

Saw this earlier this evening and grabbed it but haven’t tried it yet. Looking forward to trying it out tomorrow morning and will report back! I snagged it for 6.97 at my local walmart, w00t w00t!

  • Kim

I am always on the look out for a sheer coverage powder. I will definitely give this a try. Maybelline has been really impressing me lately. I have been on a strict beauty budget, so ive been making a big effort to find drugstore products that can stand in for my usual tarte, benefit and sephora products.

  • Jen

Thanks for writing an in-depth review. I am intrigued, but so happy with the long wear time for my Bare minerals, I don’t know if I will try it. Tempted though! I love that compact a lot!

  • Cookie

I’m intrigued. Some days I try to do a five-minute-face. A bit of powder, sheer color on lips and a coat of mascara. I’ve been using a Clinique powder but it’s not working for me right now. This sounds like it’s exactly what I need. Added to my list. Thx!

  • Emi

I hated this powder – I found that it was too “powdery” for lack of a better word, and got everwhere, plus emphasized pore texture. I’m glad this worked for you though – just goes to show how much reviews vary!

    • Isabella Muse

oh no 🙁 what sort of skin do you have emi? curious minds…! def a powdery aspect to it but it is very silky and smooth as well 🙂 but yup, different strokes for different folks that’s why I love beauty 😀 everyone has a diff experience to share!

      • Emi

I’m quite dry at this time of year (more normal-dry in the summer). I can see what you mean about silkiness, though.

  • Jane

I bought this in Porcelain something or another (number 10?) and it is SO freakishly dark on me! It grabs on to every bit of my SPF and looks like I am going for some offensive Halloween makeup a la Julianne Hough. Having swiped it on my (much drier) face the night I bought it, it may be too dark, but isn’t as bad as it looks in the morning. I wonder how long I have to let my SPF set; I’ve done ten minutes. The formula really feels spectacular.

Now if only they’d bring back the famed concealer I missed out on!

    • Isabella Muse

no offense but your SPF sounds like a nightmare 🙁 what are you using?!

      • Jane

I love my SPF – it seems to work, doesn’t break me out and doesn’t burn my eyes, which evidently is impossible in SPF. I’m on my fourth tube!. It’s the Estée Lauder Daywear SPF 50 – usually I use a smidge of foundation or tinted moisturizer and it’s fine, but evidently powder straight on top is no good. And now I know. 🙂

        • Isabella Muse

hmm I haven’t tried Daywear so I can’t even say how it does with powder, darn…! oh well 🙂 we learn right?

        • kate

Jane, does your spf by E.L. have parabens? I learned the danger of them last summer, and found only two unscented, non oily non parabens kind at ULTA. The one I got, I didn’t love…..Cotz, but they had Posey ___________ can’t remember the entire name, but it’s pricey. It was perfect, in a tiny bottle, and I wish I’d sprung for it. This year, I hope MORE companies are on the paraben free bandwagon, and provide us with SPFs without them. SO many burn my eyes, even if I don’t use on my face, say, on my arm, it waves up to omy eyes and burns. Not the Posey kind, or the Physician’s Choice? kind that specifically leaves them out. It’s a powder, with tint. Can’t use that all over, though.

I really like this powder a lot, and ive tried very few drugstore powders that i liked. I had a hard time finding a shade though. I first picked up 40nude and decided to get 60sandy beige as well, 60 oxidized really bad on me, 40 was much better slightly darker. i could have probably got away with it but i p/u 20 classic beige to try first. funny enough swatched they all blend in seamlessly, its just when they settle. I have 20 on today and i like it a lot better. i usually don’t have a problem with oxidizing (mufe pro was the only one) but this seems to be problematic so i rather go lighter in shade. Im wearing it over chanel perfection lumiere and i think the cvg is awesome. satin finish, gets slightly shiny around my nose and chin in the usual 6-7hrs on my combo/dry skin

    • Isabella Muse

hey anne….! Hmm I was going for the next shade up for me as Classic Ivory seemed too light but no issues with oxidizing, kinda wish it did go a bit darker for me but it stayed true to shade…! hopefully I don’t run into issues with the next shade :-/

      • anne

I have swatches if it helps, i can email them to you. Im not sure why it did that, there was less of an issue with nude, could be the combo i used. But normally aside from the usual settling from most fdn/powders i don’t have that problem. i would say nude is about a half shade different.

        • Isabella Muse

oh it’s ok dear don’t go to any troubles 😀 I’m going to eyeball it next trip to the DS ;D

      • anne

You know i just noticed that there are 16 shades online but the store displays are only 12

        • Isabella Muse

probably because they haven’t built them into the perm display yet but when they do I’m sure you’ll find all 16!

          • anne

I picked up the lightest shade for my friend after noticing that 15, i think it was ivory was actually darker than shade 20. but then online buff beige is at the bottom definitely out of order

  • Krystel M

I really like this powder, I’m mostly dry and it did not cling to my drier areas. Neither did it accentuate the pores on my cheeks. I actually got to for my recent trip to Haiti and it held up about 3 hours in the heat before needing a touch up. This week, during the polar vortex, it didn’t dry me out. Overall, it’s a pretty good powder.

    • Isabella Muse

happy to hear it 😀 it has BEEN COLD as hell but yup looked great on my drier skin too!

  • Tricia

I looked at my Target today after specifically going to pick up this powder, and I didn’t see any Dream Matte powders even in the obscure corners of the aisles. I think you may be correct that this is replacing it. Thanks for yet another awesome review!

    • Isabella Muse

hiya tricia! thanks for the update 🙂 aw my pleasure hope it helped!

  • lauren

I work in the Harmon department at Bed Bath and Beyond and currently the dream matte powders are on clearance. When going through cosmetic ordering, the system won’t allow me to order more. I have a feeling that the dream wonder powder is its replacement.

  • Abryda

I really like this product, I have normal/combination skin & an occasional breakout here & there but for the most part I have no skin issues. I was very surprised at the silkiness of the powder & it did not feel heavy at all I loved the coverage & flawless finish on me. I normally use Bare Minerals mineral veils which I will continue using but for me this is something I would use if I wanted just that added touch of coverage it’s travel friendly as you know the loose minerals are a mess when transporting. Thanks for your post Muse and everything you do for the beauty enthusiasts like me. Happy New Year!!!!

    • Isabella Muse

hi abryda 🙂 thanks for adding your mini review here very helpful! aw my pleasure my pleasure thank YOU for reading! happy new year!

  • ARICA

im obsessed w it!! its my current fav powder!! its so smooth and silky and mattifying!!! ill be repurchasing for sure!! thanks for the review!!

  • Sarah

This powder does have MAJOR oxidation issues-probably due to the fact that it is talc-free (or being marketed that way). I bought the lightest shade available and while I love the way it feels, it only took about 10 minutes for it to turn muddy on me. I am used to oxidation=VERY oily skin, but I’ve never had a product turn so quickly or so drastically on me-and I have used Dream Matte for years. I do find if I swipe a setting powder or loose powder on under it, the oxidation is miminal BUT then why bother…because it feels so darn good!

  • Hazel

Does this apply better with the sponge provided or a brush? Would you recommend applying with a brush at all?

  • Jeenniee

I used to use their old product the maybelline dream matte powder I was the honey Shade but now that they change the whole colors around I’ve been having a hard time finding my color with their new product if someone can help me please ? If you were a honey shade what shade are you now ? I really would appreciate your help . Thank you

    • samira

I hate this powder, it makes my face look bad and yellow :/ I don’t recommend this powder at all, I WANT THIS DREAM MATTE POWDER BACK, PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP ME? where to find this powder somehow? thanks I appreciate ur help.

  • Hannah

Have you used it on top of a primer? I’m wondering if a primer/setting spray would extend the product’s wear time. Definitely interested in trying this!

  • Johanna

I wonder if this would go with Estee Lauder’s Double Wear foundation? I find their powder too heavy and they discountinued the Double Matte Foundation I thought was perfect.

  • Chrissie

Thank you for reviewing this product. I recently purchased this on sale from my local store here in Canada, I have noticed that first few several times I have used it with RT powder brush that it seems the top layer of this powder seems to have some oil residue on it? Has anyone seen this happening as well? I don’t know if it is just a dud or something but I also did tried using the sponge applicator, but the oily sort of residue still stays on top.

  • Happiness

I dream muse today I tried 2 buy both and the sales lady told me if I use muse I don’t have to use powder unless if I was using foundation is this true….?

  • Elena

I love this powder! The only thing is that the powder crumbles 🙁 I loved it so much that I bought another one hoping that this one will not have that problem but it does. I can not finish the product because it crumbles on me. I keep it in a makeup bag and sometimes it goes to the gym with me but that is about it. Really makes me sad because I love the way it looks and feels on my skin but I may have to discontinue buying it.
