Maybelline Espresso Exposed Color Sensational Lipstick Review & Swatches

Maybelline Espresso Exposed Color Sensational Lipstick

Maybelline Espresso Exposed Color Sensational Lipstick is one of the more dramatic shades launched with the Maybelline the Buffs Lipstick Collection.

As you know the Buffs are a range of several new nude, natural lipsticks that will be part of Maybelline’s permanent Color Sensational Lipstick range starting this Spring.

The colors were created to flatter a variety of different skin tones and obviously Maybelline Espresso Exposed Color Sensational Lipstick is most fitting for warmer skin tones than my own.

But no worries you can totally rock a vampy lip look with it.

Maybelline Espresso Exposed Color Sensational Lipstick is all bold and drama kids. The formula is nice and creamy with fully opaque coverage at first application. It does have a very subtle flavor and scent. I’m finding the Buffs seems to vary with their flavor and fragrance and this shade is one of the more subtler ones in that area. This has a satin finish and doesn’t tug or drag during application which is a plus for such a richly pigmented shade.

My issue with it stems from the fact it is hard to get an even finish with as it tends to want to migrate everywhere during application and once applied it does much of the same. I’d recommend some sort of transparent or colored lipliner to keep it from taking road trips around your face. The color is quite dramatic for fair or even medium tones so a little clear gloss can help sheer it out and make it considerably more wearable (that’s how I wore it below as you aren’t getting nearly the full effect of it in my picture below).

The shade is a bit burgundy with a deeper wine to it.

If you like the drama this one brings it as it is the boldest shade in the Buffs line up.

It’s a bit too much for me applied full on but with gloss I can work it easily!

I liked this one, a lot, so it gets a Muse Approval.

Have you tried any of the Buffs yet?

I purchased this item.

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. The swatch is very pretty! I was surprised to see this shade included in the the Buffs line because it’s so vampy lol. Kind of random but it works. I actually like the way you wore it! It’s very pretty with a bit of gloss!

I think the ones you’ve tried have looked very pretty on you. That you’re adding gloss perhaps just shows that you’re smart.
In contrast, I got 5 and they all look pretty bad on me. Way too brown! My skin has a yellow undertone so a slight brown tint can work (blonde hair and blue eyes). These do not work at all! Well, maybe with a colored gloss over some of them I can look fine but never great.
I agree that the formula varies by color. Same experience on my end exactly.
    Too bad…great concept!

aw thanks megan! do sheer them out with a little gloss, they are workable 😀

This is a great dramatic look. It looks great on you, Muse! I like a bold lip, and sometimes red just doesn’t work. This looks like a good alternative.

I love this one! I have it and agree with your comments, it makes a nice dark but still natural looking lip color. I wish it was more staining after it wore off, tho . . .. I think it’s a great color.
