Moisturizing Skincare Recommendations for Drier Skin

moisturizing products for drier skin

Lord knows I have drier skin so I though I’d recommend moisturizing products for drier skin types. You know I went to the Chanel counter last year to look at skincare and the rep told me I had combination skin. I seriously felt like I won the lotto when she told me that even if I did feel she completely missed the mark because lord knows anything is better than drier skin.

Drier skin ages faster and I totally think it is one of the more high maintenance skin types. Struggling with shine and oil? Be HAPPY about that because you’ll likely look younger longer.

We dry skin folk end up looking like a dried up raisin by 40!

So here’s a list of some recommended moisturizing products for the drier skin ladies and lads out there.

Steam Cream
Steam Cream is a multitasking moisturizer that can be used all over your body including your face. Steam Cream isn’t for everyone’s taste as it has been known to have a lavender scent that isn’t particularly appealing to the masses. I, however, do not mind in the least. This is sorta kinda a Lush Dream Cream dupe up and not any great surprise considering Steam Cream is brought to us by Lush. Housed in collectible tins, Steam Cream is created using steam to give it a soft, supple texture that absorbs easily into skin. It can be used on your body, your hands, and yes even your face. In the dead of Winter when no one can hear your screams my face is pretty flaky and this instantly relieves that drama on contact! Plus it does wonders with my drier elbows and knees! A true multitasking diva for the drier skin folk.

Mizon No 1 Moist King’s Berry Cream

Korea’s popular and cute ape, King, has a wide range of super size skincare products including the popular Moist King’s Berry Cream and no it doesn’t smell like berries. This one is kinda a dupe up of Steam Cream in my opinion. Thick, creamy, super rich, and able to take on rough elbows and knees as well as a dry, flaky complexion this moisturizing gem supposedly whitening and anti-aging benefits. All I know is it gives dry skin a heaping dose of much needed moisture.

Biore Moist Sealing Gel Lotion

Available in a range of formulas (my favorite being the very moist formula) Biore Moist Sealing Lotion is a toning lotion that launched in Japan last year. This is a thicker toner than you might be familiar with here in the US. It’s almost a gel-like consistency which can be used all its own to provide instant moisture to skin or under your other favorite skincare products. The gel absorbs easily into skin and leaves drier skin feeling soft, supple, and very, very hydrated.

Dr. Jart Ceramidin Cream
and Dr. Jart Ceramidin Liquid
If you’re looking for long term healing properties Dr Jart has you covered with these two products. These not only provide instant fast absorbing motion but they will help skin retain that moisture for long periods of time so your skin looks plumped, healthy, and takes on some of your glow due to dryness!

Curel Ultra Healing
A little unknown fact about Curel products, most can be used on your face! Occasionally my skin becomes a bit sensitive when it gets cold which means it gets even drier and products tend to sting when I apply them. Not good! It’s almost a chapped-like issue for me. When this happens Curel is one of the gentlest and highly hydrating products I can use on my face. I do so overnight as day use is a bit overkill! It actually provides long term moisture and gets my skin look fab again in a hurry. I keep it handy for those days I really need heavy moisture!

Sana Hadanomy Aqua Placenta Cream

Sana’s Aqua Placenta Cream is a gel-like consistency that absorbs easily into skin which makes it very easy to wear in the day. On the plus side it offers intense LONG lasting hydration. Not only providing moisture but sealing it into your skin. If my skin is looking extra nice I blame it on this as it eases dullness considerably by providing intense moisture.

Etude House Flower Moistfull Cream

Etude House’s entire range of Moistfull products is fab but I’m quite a fan of the lovely scent of the Flower Moistfull Cream. This gel moisturizer sinks easily into skin and not only provide great moisture but can be used as a lightweight daily moisturizer for any season including Summer without making skin too oily, shiny, or feeling like you have TOO much moisturizer on.

DHC Moisture Fruit Gel Cream Moisturizer

I typically use DHC’s entire Fruit range in the Summer because it provides great moisture but isn’t heavy nor does it create extra oil or shine on my skin. However, this one does pack a punch as it helps skin retain moisture, keeping it supple and quite soft. Plus many skin types can take advantage of this one.

Etude House Nutriful Shea Butter Eye Cream

This one won’t treat your finer lines dears but it will provide excellent moisture to drier eyes. I really like the thicker, creamy texture yet quick to absorb formula on this one. Typically I apply it over my regular eye cream for extra moisture!

Do you have drier skin?

What are you go to products to treat it?

Muse, I have you to thank for Steam Cream. After reading your raves and reviews, I stumbled across a buy one, get two promotion when shopping online. Can’t remember which retailer; Beauty Habit, I think. Anyway, loves, loves, loves the stuff. I barely notice the fragrance and it goes away very quickly. As a basic, no frills moisturizer this stuff is awesome. We’ve had an unusually dry winter this year in AZ and Steam Cream has been a lifesaver for me. Many thanks to you for featuring it!

  • Kristina

You are a saint for posting this! Thank you! My dry patches on my face thank you as well! Hehe is there a biore like that in the US? It sounds really good. Also, what do you find is the most moisturizing eye cream that really helps with lines and circles and such? My eye area is so dry right now. Even my eyebrow area is getting flaky! No good!

    • Isabella Muse

I WISH! we never get the good Kao products here in the US BOO! But you can get this easily at places like sasa.com etc 🙂 I really like Clinique’s refining eye cream at the moment, very rich and really does a good job fighting lines caused by dryness! also apply a little argan oil under your eyes prior to eye cream it helps big time or even vaseline dare I say it!

      • Kristina

I’ll have to try the argon oil idea. Thanks so much! Why can’t the US have such amazing skincare products?! I agree with your BOO! Steam Cream sounds great too! Just reread your review on it. Sad that they’re $20 now, but sounds like they’re worth the investment or can be found on other sites for a deal. Oily skin seems like it’d be so much easier to take care of ( and the raisin by 40…not gonna be happy with that lol).

        • Isabella Muse

tarte has a discovery kit which I highly recommend, believe it is going to be 10 or 15, it hasn’t become available yet unfortunately but it will shortly I hope I’d pick that up as you get the oil and the eye cream, small sizes but still nice for prepping prior to makeup https://www.musingsofamuse.com/2014/01/tarte-bright-night-skincare-discovery-set-review-swatches.html you can def find deals 🙂 Amen sis…I wish I had oily skin! I don’t smoke, take super care of my skin but still feel like 40 I’m going to be a prune at this rate!

          • Kristina

That kit sounds great! I’ve been wanting to try their eye cream. I’ll have to pick it up when it comes out if I can. I’m 30 and people think I’m younger but I think it’s bc of the piercings. What people don’t realize is they’re really a distraction technique to keep the eyes away from my dry, ever-wrinkling skin. Shhh, don’t tell lol

          • Isabella Muse

I don’t get why it hasn’t launched yet on site, been waiting on it to pop up! lol..you’re cute I’m sure you look amazing piercings or not :-D!

  • Shane

I went on a search to find a cheaper alternative to Dr. Jart’s Ceramidin line after I heard rave reviews and I stumbled upon Cerave. Still a bit pricey for drugstore, but still cheaper than Dr. Jart. I use the Moisturizing Cream which incorporates ceramides & hyaluronic acid just like Dr. Jart!

  • My Chau

I have combo normal/oily (acne prone) & dehydrated skin… Which moisturizer should I try?

    • Cindy

I’ve been having good results using Yes to Tomatoes Daily Balancing Moisturizer. I find that it I use heavy creams, my skin gets clogged and gross. This one is pretty light and one full pump is enough for my face and neck! It’s lightweight but keeps my skin hydrated.

  • Ruth

The grass isn’t greener on the other side of dry! I have sensitive combo skin and am always battling against blackheads and pimples in my T zone. I can spot a gnarly blackhead at 20 paces and take great pleasure in popping them! I know that it’s bad for my skin to squeeze them out but that gross stuff in there is bad too.

      • Ruth

lol! I get the “ohmygawdicantbelieveyour37!!!” I tell people that I look younger because I moisturize and don’t have kids =)

      • Susannah

dear Muse, I tried Lauder’s Nutriv last night (see earlier email) and I was very disappointed. It didn’t have the emollient feel I was looking for. L’Oreal’s Age Perfect Glow Renewal is much better, and much less expensive.

I read in the newspaper that Target is now carrying Leniege (spelling?) that you have referred to. The Target near me didn’t have it — perhaps it’s only available at Super Targets?

Do you think it is a good line? The paper referred to it as a “cult line.”

        • Isabella Muse

aw sorry chica! 🙁 That is correct, I did a post about it last week! It’s one of Amore Pacific’s little sister brands that was available exclusive in Asia for a while. It’s also available online but from my understand it is available at all target locations perhaps your target just hasn’t updated stock yet! They make quite good products I don’t have a ton of skincare reviews up from them but have done posts over the years on the brand that can be found here https://www.musingsofamuse.com/category/beauty-abroad/laneige I’ll be reviewing some of the items offered at Target soon so expect to hear thoughts shortly 🙂

  • Melissa

    Your reviews are great!
I have eczema which causes my skin to be very dry, but as a teenager I get pimples too, which is frustrating with a heavy moisturiser, but what I’ve found to work so far is jojoba oil after shower or before bed because it helps with moisture but helps keep away pimples, and i’ve just been using a daily moisturiser, cetaphil, which is good for all skin types =)
I enjoy your blogs, it’s just a downer that I can’t get most of these products in Australia.

    • Isabella Muse

hey melissa! I’ve never used jojoba oil but sounds like it might be great for moisture 😀 thanks so glad you enjoy the posts and sorry 🙁 I’m sometimes in the same boat where I want something abroad and find it hard to grab up!

  • Maddie

Sorry I didn’t get a chance to look at this until today. I cannot thank you enough for this post! I have very dry skin and for some reason it’s been worse than usual lately. I’ve been meaning to try out steam cream forever; I have to give that one a go. The others look really good, too. Thank you!! *bookmarks post* *adds products to shopping cart.*

    • Isabella Muse

don’t be sorry that’s quite alright and glad it helped a little 😀 my pleasure Maddie hope some of the products help with your dry skin battle 😀

  • Debbie

Muse,,,Please don’t give up on that dry skin sweetie! I’m 50+ with dry skin,,& I don’t look like a dried-up prune,,(as of yet). Lol! I’ve always had dry skin,,& yes it IS frustrating (esp. in Winter with the flakiness)! I’ve tried to remember to stay out of direct sun, no smoking, no alcohol, drinking lots of water, exfoliating, etc. (everything you’re taught to do,,,but Lord knows I wasn’t an angel. lol),,,& it has paid off. People are always surprised when they find out my age. They think I’m in my mid-to-late 30s. (I think they’re being too kind. lol) My regimen is simple. Cleansing with Jergens face cream (& using it as a moisturizer) & using plain ole baking soda (as an exfoliator 1-2x per week). Also, I use Vaseline as a mascara remover & as a lash conditioner (in the PM). Hey,,,what can I say? It works for me & I’m sticking with it. So to all dry skin sweeties (and other types),,Find what works for you & stick with it,,There IS HOPE! ;-D (sorry for the long essay post. lol)

    • Isabella Muse

thanks debbie 😀 ALWAYS a relief to hear it. I take extra care of my skin too in the hopes at your age I will look in my mid-late 30’s too ;-D one can HOPE! 😀 You’re very lucky! Keep up what you are doing, sounds like it is def working for you!

  • Susannah

My grandmother had beautiful skin till the day she died at 86. She used a very emollient night crème by Elizabeth Arden (long discontinued) that my grandfather called ‘goose grease.’ It was very greasy but boy did she have beautiful skin!

I visited the Estee Lauder counter at Nordie’s and asked for the most emollient night time moisturizer they had. The Lauder rep sold me Nutriv. I haven’t tried it yet because I am finishing up the jar of L’Oreal’s Age Perfect Glow Renewal — a fabulous moisturizer too and of course less expensive than Lauder’s.

For dry skin day moisturizer you can’t beat Lauder’s new Revitalizing Supreme. Love it!

  • Jordan

I have found a godsend in The Body Shop vitamin E night cream. I’ve been drier than normal this winter and it has seriously saved my skin. I also really like Tarte maracuja oil.

  • KG

I just ordered the Steam Cream!! They have free worldwide delivery! Can’t wait to get my own adorable tin can!

    • Isabella Muse

yay happy to hear it KG! ;-D let me know what you think!

  • Kelsey Reid

Hi Muse, I’m an oily girl, but I’m also a dark-skinned person. A lot of people think just for those two reasons they do not have to moisturize or use sunscreen. But I want to prevent lines later! Have you encountered or heard of any good lightweight moisturizers for oily girls?

  • Debra

    Hi Muse,
I am 53 and super dry. And I mean DRY! It’s a snow storm when I take my clothes off! I have never felt oil on my face, even in my teen years. Things do look greener on the other side of the hill when it comes to having dry skin. I am so thankful that there are more options for us dry people than there used to be. It seemed that we were forgotten about for a long time.

I think that since my skin was so dry as a young girl, it caused me to take better care of my skin earlier than my friends did. I don’t think my complexion looks any worse than my friends’ that are the same age. In fact some of them ask what I do to make my skin look so good. So, there is hope after 50! Especially since there are so many great options now.

I use Dove white bar soap for my cleanser. It was suggested by my dermatologist. He said that bar soap has less chemicals in it. Since I switched from my cleansers to the Dove bar my skin has been better. I use grape seed oil after my anti aging serum (I switch around on serums), then follow up with Eucerin Plus Soothing Essentials Lotion Alpha Hydroxy Formula. Then I go ahead with my primer and makeup. This combination has greatly improved my dryness. My eye area is by far the driest part on my face.

I love following you and your reviews, especially knowing you are a dry girl too! Just wanted to give you hope after 50!

    • Isabella Muse

AW thanks Debra! This truly does make me feel better! I’m always scared my skin is going to look like leather when I hit 40! 😀 thanks for the tips on what you use also!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
