If you’re a on budget might I introduce you to the delightful Coastal Scents 28 Neutral Palette? This eyeshadow palette contains 28 shades of neutral, natural eyeshadows in a variety of matte and shimmer finishes for $11.95 currently on sale (regularly $19.95).

Count me surprised as I LOVE this thing.

This comes housed in a slim matte case which is rather large for travel but perfectly sized for storage as the thinner matte compact doesn’t take up a ton of room by being too bulky. It’ll travel well…but a slimmer case such as the one that Coastal Scents embraced with their Revealed Palette might be more portable friendly!

I think if you’ve tried some of the original, warm, or metallic 88 Shade Palettes you need to put aside what you know about them. I have these myself and I thought the shades a bit too frosty. And if I’m honest the Revealed Palette also had a few shades that were too frosty for my likes.

The Coastal Scents 28 Neutral Palette lacks that frost which makes it a way nicer palette. The palette is packed with a selection of some of the most traditional and universally used shade of beige, tan, cream, and browns that most people use in their daily natural looks. It’s a palette I can see myself using happily for all my natural looks.

About 75% of the shades are matte with a few satins thrown in. I was worried about the mattes being dry and/or chalky but they are quite soft and silky. They do run sheerer but with primer under them they have a nice intense color pay off. I was worried about colors being a little too like the Wet n Wild Flirting at the After Party Eyeshadow Palette where colors would fade through the wear or even fade during application. No worries though! With shadow prime colors remain intense through the wear and even during application I felt they applied and adhered to my lid very well.

Of course, the satin shades had the best formula of the finishes. They are soft and velvety. It wouldn’t say they have the same consistency you’d get from say an E.L.F. Palette but are a step above it. Pigmentation is excellent and I didn’t feel the need to wear primer under them. On my drier eyes they wore well without losing intensity or creasing through an eight hour period.

I’ve always personally loved having a ton of naturals in one place that’s probably why I love Urban Decay Naked so much but of course, this doesn’t have the same higher price as Naked does! So if you’re on a budget I’d say the Coastal Scents 28 Neutral Palette is a good way to go.

Two downsides though…these shadows do have mineral oil, not a problem at all for me but some folks aren’t keen on the ingredient and secondly, opening the palette I do get a very strong chemical scent. This doesn’t smell doesn’t translate once applied but each time you open the palette you will smell it.

Aside from these two issues I really enjoyed this palette and think it makes for a great budget pick up for those who can’t really afford to dish out $30 or more dollars on a palette.

If these were sold in actual, physical stores, I’d be all over it, LOL! Not that I *need* it, but I have this strange addiction to neutrals, and have waaay too many to justify ordering this at the moment…

The “chemical” smell may simply be from the adhesive that sticks the pans from the palette. If that’s the case, it should fade after a short while, quicker if you let it air out a bit.

Can the pans pop out and be put in a smaller palette? I’m after a dusky pink rose shade like Limit in Naked 3 but I don’t want to buy N3 just for one shade and there looks like something similar might be in this palette, just don’t want to carry it around for one shade though.

I am a big fan of this palette. I think you just can’t beat the quality and color selection for the price. I’m glad you reviewed this palette!

Are there a lot of dupes within the palette? Like, those first two swatches in the second picture look identical to me.

I actually have had this palette for a few years now (maybe an older version?) and pulled it out this week. I get great pigmentation, and if I prime, the colors stay on surprisingly well. Haven’t noticed any smell. The most annoying thing is that a few of the pans fell out. All in all I love it!

I’ve never tried Costal Scents eye shadow, but this is tempting. 75% matte especially….but the smell….wonder what that’s about? The shades look amazing.

I’ve always been tempted to try Coastal Scents.. and I’m a sucker for neutral palettes!

What a steal! I might order it! Even though I just ordered the updated version of Too Faced’s Natural Eye Palette, haha

For the price Coastal Scents are pretty nice. I got the bright palette when Bobbi Brown first came out with that colorful little number many moons ago. I wanted that puppy so bad but just couldn’t bite the over $70 price tag.

I found that with those older palettes the shadows were a little frosty (if you’re younger that’s fine because they are just shimmery – when you’re older and the shadows are too frosty it just accentuates the crepeness.)

The smell may be coming from the product but more than likely it’s coming from the plastic and glue the product is packaged in.

And, in your post about Revlon Orange lippie I noted that your eye makeup looked particularly FETCHING. 😀

    Hey Muse
What primer did you use for the swatches above? Seems to “hold” the colour together really well!

    • Isabella Muse

i don’t use primer in my shadow swatches or any swatches it would vastly misrepresent the product Dee. Hope this helps!
