Urban Decay Heavy Metal Loose Glitter Review & Swatches

Urban Decay Heavy Metal Loose Glitter

Urban Decay Heavy Metal Loose Glitter ($12) are a new loose glitter product that Urban Decay launched with their Summer 2014 Collection in six different shades.

If you love Urban Decay Heavy Metal Eyeliners this gives a different spin on the glittery goodness you get in those liners.

Take a look!

Along with Urban Decay Heavy Metal Loose Glitter the brand also released something called Bondage Weightless Makeup Adhesive to apply these with. I’ll review it in another post but I would like to say it would have been nicer if they upped the price on the loose glitter slightly and included a smaller size Bondage with the glitter. I know I won’t use Urban Decay Heavy Metal Glitter often and dislike the fact that if I do want to use it I’d have to buy two different products to make use out of the glitter. You can of course, use your own makeup adhesive (eyeshadow primer doesn’t really work so you need some sort of adhesive for the best placement) but honestly, I don’t really have one laying around so I’d have to buy Bondage or some other adhesive for the best wear.

After photographing and swatching these I felt down right abused. They are such a mess. You likely won’t have to go through the drama of swatching them but the packaging is a tiny jar with a sifter so even during application you’ll likely have a glitter on the highway, glitter on the front porch, and glitter on the mattress experience with these. It’s just explosive glitter everywhere.

Urban Decay recommends prepping with Bondage, patting onto your lid, and applying the glitter. It’s difficult to use a finger to apply as most of the glitter kept sticking on my finger so I ended up trying to apply with a q-tip. Needless to say there was a good deal of fall out. Bondage helps to keep the glitter on but the fall out can’t be avoided. You have to tap the glitter out onto the back of your hand for the best results I guess but again I ended up with it everywhere. You can remove the sifter as this might help to give you easier access to the contents of the jar but be careful you don’t spill it everywhere.

They are beautiful shades and the particles of glitter are larger pieces which are highly reflective when light hits them but unfortunately they are a mess to apply as is the case with most cosmetic glitter products. I noticed no warning about using these on your eyes however, it does mention in the instructions to be careful it doesn’t fall into eyes and to rinse with water if you do get it into your eyes. Sensitive eyes might find the chunky pieces irritating. I wore ACDC in the house for several hours to test…they do hold on lids well with Bondage without creasing however, I do find they flake off a bit so you will have to dust off a bit of glitter from under your eyes and cheeks as the day progresses. I imagine in a hot environment like a club where you might be dancing you’ll likely have even more fall out. If you layer enough they don’t really fade or crease it’s just the fall out that’s a problem as it’s unavoidable no matter what adhesive you use that you’re going to experience fall out at some point.

I think I like the idea of Urban Decay Heavy Metal Loose Glitter more than the product. It’s difficult for me to say that I’ll likely make use of a product like this daily. I’d say it’s reserved for cosplay, parties, clubbing perhaps…and even than it seems like A LOT of glitter and lord knows I love me some sparkle but this is too much for me.

Some people will adore I’m sure but I just find them a little too challenging to use and to work in everyday looks. These are more reserved for special occasions.

Anyone try them?

Or wanting to try them?

What do you think of Urban Decay Heavy Metal Loose Glitter?

What sort of looks would you create using them?

I’m a fantasy artist so glitter is part of my “work uniform” but I think these are super chunky. I don’t know. The teal one is pretty but I can see one of those chunky bits getting in a contact lens and it being super bad news followed by me frantically arm flapping around my booth going “my EYE oh god my EYE” and then a trip to the bathroom to fix it.

    • Isabella Muse

that’s completely understandable but for daily use it’s hard to work these into a look ya know? I mean I can’t go to the office with glitter crusted lids haha…LOL true that!

      • Ash Evans

I completely agree, glitter is not for the professional work place, people just assume you went out the night before and staggered into work or something. I think I prefer a “daintier” eye glitter. The smaller it is the less I care about fallout on my face just because with what I do it just looks intentional. I see it being totally frustrating however, if you are just trying to keep it on the lid. I work with glitter a lot and adhere it to a lot of surfaces, it goes everywhere no matter what you do, even my cats end up with it on.

Muse, I love reading your reviews because you are so honest! Even if a product is all the rage in the blogosphere, I can count on you to give the unvarnished truth.
They are really pretty colors, but I doubt I will purchase them unless they go on a massive sale. (I cannot resist an Urban Decay Sale – it’s an addiction).
I’m a costume wearing, convention attending geek, so glitter is a huge part of my “special” makeup looks, and these look too chunky and messy to me. If I *was* going to wear them, I’d pop off that insane little sifter and apply them with a synthetic brush to a cheaper glitter glue. As it is, I really don’t think they can compete with Eye Kandy or some of the other products on the market.

    • Isabella Muse

thank you heather very very very flattered to hear you say that 🙂 LOL me neither who can resist UD on sale? Do you shop ACW? They always have UD on sale 😀 I don’t do much cosplay but I do attend conventions too but none of my looks are glitter related when I go hehe 😀 maybe I should start using them when I go that’d be a good idea to use them! You def have to use a dense brush to apply..something cheap though so you aren’t ruining a good brush ;-D Off topic but what are some of your costumes you’ve done? love to hear!

      • Heather

Muse, I do shop ACW sometimes… but I try not to log in too often so my bank account doesn’t complain too loudly.
I don’t do a lot of character specific cosplay, but I really love creating costumes, especially when awesome makeup is involved. I have an Autumn Fairy costume where I create a “mask” around my eyes with faux leaves and spirit gum, and a Nereid (sea nymph) that involves lots layers and blues and opalescent pearly colors. Another favorite is a steampunk saloon girl ala “Wild Wild West.

        • Isabella Muse

LOL I hear ya! oh my god I’d love to see your steampunk saloon girl! 😀 sounds brilliant (do like autumn fairy too, its my fav season!)! Fun!

  • Celine

Never have tried glitter makeup products, and I’m all about fun so these appeal to me. What if you put the bondage on your brush and then dipped it in the glitter?

    • Isabella Muse

it’s best to apply bondage directly on your eye as you wanna create a surface for the glitter to adhere to.

  • Debbie

I have been wondering if there is any difference between these, as well as other cosmetic glitters, and the fine glitter that you can get at the craft store.

  • Ashley

These sound stupid. Craft store product indeed. Unless you’re Pat Mc Garth backstage at fashion week don’t even try to use these at home kids.

  • Phyrra

There’s no way I’m putting these near my eyes. I think they’re perfect for nail art though. They’re just too chunky / large for my eyeballs.

    • Isabella Muse

LOL! I can’t blame you. thankfully my eyes are sensitive but they still feel all kinds of chunky for all day wear on eyes!

  • Meg

I was excited when I saw they were coming out with glitters, but once I saw them up close I was like those are gonna be messy lol! They look like craft store glitter, didn’t expect the particles to be so big. I ordered the Electric Palette and cream liner instead!

  • Ankita@corallista

I might have been up to trying these but after reading the general response, I’d be a little scared of fallout into my eyes!

  • sheryl

Love the B-52’s reference! Things like that make me appreciate your reviews all the more.

  • Gillie

Love Shack is stuck in my head now! 🙂

These are so pretty, but WAY too much glitter. My kids complain when I wear red lipstick because they might get some on them…imagine if I tried these! I’d have to live somewhere else!!

    • Isabella Muse

LOL ;-D mine too! Ear worm! 😀 LOL awwww! “Mom you got glitter on us again!”

  • cat

Oh lord. It’s actual glitter. There’s a reason they call glitter the herpes of art supplies. But I can see Pyrotechnics going well with like a Glinda Halloween costume so I guess it has its uses.
