Urban Decay Perversion, Black Velvet, Zero Comparisons

I thought I’d do Urban Decay Perversion, Black Velvet, Zero comparisons for those curious about the newest 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil Eyeliner that Urban Decay released for Summer 2014.

Urban Decay Black Velvet 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil is a new, permanent matte finish which joins the brand’s range of blacker than black eyeliners.

Here’s how comparisons of all three shades!

Urban Decay Perversion 24/7 Glide On Pencil
for me is a glossy finish although it has been referred to as matte. This is very creamy, very slick, and glides onto eyes without tugging. On my drier eyes it wears all day without fading, migrating, or smearing. The color has a far easier to use texture when compared to the newer, drier, and matte Urban Decay Black Velvet 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil. It also works beautifully on the waterline where as Black Velvet I had a bit of an issue rimming. This is an excellently pigmented eyeliner with an easy glide and a creamy texture.

Urban Decay Zero 24/7 Glide
on Pencil is a semi-matte but I find it duller when compared to the ink jet pigment of both Perversion and Black Velvet. I find it tugs a little bit during application and isn’t as creamy as Perversion and I have a single pass doesn’t give me a fully opaque line.

Now with the introduction of Urban Decay Black Velvet Glide On Pencil you get a fully matte finish eye pencil with an intensely black color pay off. This is the pencil you’ll want if you have oily eyes as it is a good deal denser, less slick, less creamy, and far more matte than Perversion. It’s also the eyeliner you’ll want if you like to smoke out your eye pencil! For me Perversion does smoke out nicely but it has a bit of a smear-y effect! The drier finish of Black Velvet gives you a better texture to achieve smokiness. Like Perversion is does have an intense blacker than black pigment.

For me Urban Decay Black Velvet and Perversion are spot on dupes for each other swatched side by side. It’s really just the texture and finish of the eyeliners that differs. Do you need them both? Yes, I do believe you need them both especially if you do a lot of smoke work on your eyes as Black Velvet is the more friendlier eyeliner to do this work. However, I think for cat eyes or just basic lining and waterlining Perversion is a good tool. One thing about Black Velvet is it does create very nice even, smooth lines but I disliked how it performed on my waterline! Color wasn’t as intense as Perversion and it sorta had a dragging consistency. You have to remember Black Velvet has more of a powdery texture and combined with the wetness on your waterline it’ll of course, have a weaker performance in this area.

As for Zero?

It feels a thing of the pass and not something I’d likely miss if UD decided to dump it completely. But if you just want a basic eyeliner with a little less pigment than Perversion and Black Velvet this is the shade to go with. It’s a bit duller compared to the two (even though it does swatch quite pigmented) shades so it’s good for day looks if you don’t want bolder, dramatic black eyeliner.

None the less all three shades are excellent to have in your eyeliner arsenal!

All three are available now at UrbanDecay.com.

I was wondering about Velvet and now I know! Thank you for the hard work of comparison! I thinks I might needs the Velvet liner.

  • Erin

Love my Perversion! It’s so dark and rich. I can’t wait to try Black Velvet now too

  • Sara

I’m not a huge fan of Zero but somehow I keep ending up with it! I wish UD would mix it up a bit when it includes an eyeliner with it’s sets. I ended up buying the Anarchy Facecase and thank goodness it came with Perversion instead of Zero!

  • Majick

Well, I guess we can all be prepared to be inundated with Zero pencils whilst UD tries to dispose of them.

Personally I use zero almost everyday. Even when I wear another color liner I will use zero to tightline my upper lid – it defines without being over the top.

I like perversion but it is def more pigmented than zero – I haven’t played enough to notice the subtle differences you mentioned between Perversion and Black Velvet.

WAIT! I don’t have Black Velvet! (makes ‘the scream’ face) I have Black Market! Ut oh… 😉

I keep thinking that Zero should be dumped too. I never understood why someone would reach for Zero when they could use Perversion.

  • Karen

I know I’m in the minority but I have used both Perversion and Zero extensively and actually prefer Zero! I find Zero to be just as pigmented as Perversion, but it glides on better; Perversion is a bit dry for me. I actually gave my Perversion to my daughter and kept the Zero.

I don’t use it in my waterline so I can’t speak to that.

I haven’t tried Black Velvet, but since I don’t do smoky eyes, based on your review, I think I can skip it. Thanks for reviewing these all side by side!

  • Steph

Thanks so much for the reveiw. Now I can hold off on getting black velvet. I owe too much eyeliner as it is.

  • Sarah

Old thread, I know, but I feel like I have to chime in. I’m a dedicated Zero fan. I haven’t tried Black Velvet, but I found Perversion to be too greasy for me and was forever migrating southward. Zero just stays put, even if I’m sweating.

  • Siri

Hmm, it sounds like the Black Velvet would suit me best, but it seems like they doesn’t sell that colour where I live. I have used MAC feline but it smudges (under and over my eye) due to my oily lids in 30 minutes. I have the UD pencil rockstar (I used to have demolition too) and It’s amazing, but I would really like a good black liner that doesn’t go anywhere, at least for a few hours. I was thinking of purchasing Zero since it has less pigment and might be easier to get right, but I’m not sure. Great comparison nonetheless!

Thank you! I’m trying to buy online and needed to know these details. I can immediately buy perversion with confidence after reading your post.

  • Alicia

So I just bought zero but now reading the reviews sounds like I shouldve have bought perversion Im looking for intense black color that stays on suggestion??

    • Isabella Muse

Def perversion! It’s an intense long wearing black! L’Oreal Infallible Gel Eyeliner is excellent as well!
