The Best Way to Exfoliate Your Face
Wanna know the best way to exfoliate your face? And the cheapest way? If your skin is dull, tired, stressed, and just flaky the best way to exfoliate your face won’t cost you a cent as you can do it with a simple tool you have hanging around your house anyway!
I have a standing date with best friend and his boyfriend for Sunday brunch. We catch up during this time, eat stupid amounts of dim sum, and I get to hear him gush about how fab my skin looks. I’d like to say he probably has to say that since he’s my best friend but actually, I believe he really means it because whenever I exfoliate using the method I describe below my skin literally glows with health! And mind you, Sunday Brunch typically means cheek stain and absolutely no other makeup!
Don’t get me wrong I have facial scrubs a plenty and I use them often! I also have exfoliating pads, resurfacing pads, Glycolic treatments, etc…etc…
But once I week I break out a washcloth and use that to exfoliate my skin. Try it, it’s life changing. There are actually plenty of exfoliating towels and washcloths you can purchase from a variety of Asian brands that are specifically designed for the purpose of exfoliating your face. You don’t need any of them! Any washcloth at home is perfectly great to use. Typically I use a older washcloth that might be less soft than my others and I run it under really, really hot water. I wring it out so no water remains and I brush it firmly onto my face, cheeks, forehead, etc…you want to be firm but you don’t want to be too harsh. If you suffer from ruddiness, sensitive skin, Rosacea, etc this probably isn’t a great method to use. I’d recommend it for those that aren’t sensitive and have drier, flakier skin that’s dull. I typically do it once a week because it actually is quite a strong handed method of exfoliating skin.
Be sure your skin is damp with prior to doing this and also remove all your makeup prior. You can do this with a cleanser if you like, something that foams up and lathers! I normally skip the cleanser portion as my skin is already clean but if you are using a cleanser while doing it I’d suggest something like Hada Labo Tokyo Hydrating Facial Cleanser.
I don’t fold the washcloth in any particularly way but you can fold it into a tight square if you like. I start at my forehead and work to my temples. I move the washcloth across my forehead in a brisk manner with some pressure and do so for about a minute. I move to my cheeks and rub in a circular motion using the same brisk manner with firmness as I go. You wanna feel a little tingling as you move around, if you don’t feel a little bit of a warming up as you go you’re probably being too gentle. Use pressure and be firm but don’t hurt yourself. On my cheeks I rub the hardest because I have flakier skin here. I do each cheek for about 20 to 30 seconds each. And finally I move to my chin and neck doing these areas for about a minute.
After you’re done rinse your face with cool water and pat dry. Follow up with a hydrating facial mist. You might feel a little tingle or even a burning sensation when you apply your mist. At least I do! You’ve removed quite a few dead skin cells with your washcloth so your skin might be a bit sensitive after.
Prior to applying any skincare I wait an hour after I’ve exfoliated! Typically I go ahead and apply a sheet mask after this and after that I follow up with an essence, facial oil, serum, and my moisturizer.
My skin literally glows with vitality when I use this method to exfoliate my face. It’s like I had a facial. No dullness, no flakes, just perfectly smooth, glowing skin! I even feel like my skin feels a bit firmer.
And it didn’t cost me a cent.
So grab a washcloth and try it!
Bet you’ll love the results!
Keep in mind I only do this once a week as I don’t think my skin would like me doing it daily.
If you ever wondered why my skin looks so amazing you can blame it on hot water and a washcloth.
