Revlon Moon Drops Lipstick Review & Swatches

Revlon Moon Drops Lipstick

It’s a funny thing about Revlon Moon Drops Lipstick, I’ve been using it for literally years but never have I taken time to review it on Musings of a Muse.

After reviewing Revlon Rose Velvet Super Lustrous Lipstick yesterday someone had mentioned the Moon Drops formula in my post and I said to myself, I should take some time out to review this fab drugstore lipstick!

The only thing not going for Revlon Moon Drops Lipstick is a variety of shades but outside of that this one has a whole lot of everything good going on!

I always feel like the Moon Drops Collection somehow got left curb side because they only ever have 8 to 10 shades available in the permanent display where as you can get literally millions of colors in the Super Lustrous Lipstick formula. Why?! Needless to say this is a lovely formula with a smooth, buttery texture that glides on lips and with a slightly slick texture and a high sheen finish. I’ve always found it very comfortable to wear as it’s lightweight and feels quite moisturizing on my lips. It doesn’t migrate nor does it feather and it wears for a solid four hours before showing minor fading.

Copperglaze Sienna is one of my favorite shades. This is actually a frost finish according to Revlon but I don’t really get that from it. It’s a lovely burnt copper color with excellent opacity on a single application. The only thing that might not prove a hit with sensitive users is the Moon Drops formula does have a perfume-y flavor and fragrance but aside from this I’d say it’s an absolutely joy of a lipstick with an excellent inexpensive formula.

About the Muse

Isabella MuseIsabella is just an average everyday geeky girl who doesn’t blend her eyeshadow correctly, wears too much blush, and hopes she never finds her holy grail products because she likes the thrill of the chase so much. Her mission is to bring you super honest reviews on makeup, skincare, fragrance and all things beauty. She’s in no way an expert on the topic and she sure as hell isn’t a super model. But she’s passionate about makeup and is seeking like-minded individuals that like pina coladas, getting caught in the rain, and ones that enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at Sephora without feeling buyer’s remorse. I avoid the moon drops ones because they smell like my grandmother. I just can’t stand the scent at all, and i’m not normally one who’s bothered by scented products.

I have Hot Coral and Blase Apricot from this line and they are amazing colors!

Oh, my–I remember using one in the mid ’80s. I bought one recently just to have that smell–some probably hate it, but it’s pure memory lane for me!

That looks really good on you!

This looks beautiful…I must try it. One of my favorite lipsticks from Revlon was the Moon Drops in “24K Orange”- what a lovely color it is!

This used to be Revlon’s luxury formula – it debuted almost 50 years ago and they kept practically every shade they made. Sadly, it seems to be disappearing, although I keep hoping that Revlon is planning another nostalgia-based relaunch. I know I’m dating myself but I remember when Revlon had one of the biggest counters in the department stores & all lipsticks had a signature scent.

The reason there are so few colors with no new releases is because it’s a dying line. I was a beauty advisor for CVS years ago and I had opportunity to speak to a rep from the company. Apparently the bulk of the people using this formula are in their 70’s, 80’s now. And when those people die out they’ll discontinue the line. So you may not have that much longer with it. Sorry.

Whether or not the line has been reformulated since, I can’t say, but I think the Moon Drops line was also seriously hurt by a report released in 2004 called Cabinet Confidential, by the National Environmental Trust. The report covered a whole slew of products, but the Moon Drops took a big hit because it’s something we put on our lips without even thinking.

The study found phthalates, which weren’t listed on the ingredients, as well as glycol ethers (neurotoxins).

Also, 3 or 4 years ago, the FDA released a list of 400 lipsticks that contained trace amounts of lead. There was no recall as the FDA deemed the amounts to be negligable, but there were quite a few shades of Moon Drops on the list.

Like I mentioned above, there were a whole bunch of things in that 2004 report; I’m not sure why Moon Drops got singled out as much as it did.

        Gillie,

Have they reformulated Revlon’s Moon Drops since that 2004 report? I would think that legally they had to.

I wore Copperglaze Sienna all through the 90’s, I loved that color. Have you ever found a dupe for that color and sheen. I would so appreciate finding that color again. Thanks.
