NYC City Proof Twistable Intense Lip Color Review & Swatches

NYC City Proof Twistable Intense Lip Color Pencil

NYC City Proof Twistable Intense Lip Color ($2.99) is a new chubby lip pencil balm that NYC New York Color Cosmetics launched for Spring 2014 12 shades.

I only tried one of these so far but didn’t really love the shade…..so I may need to grab up a few more to test further.

Update: I revised my review because the shade I originally tried really didn’t give me a feel for the product so I purchased a new shade CVS recently and decided to update my thoughts!

Here’s some of my thoughts!

For one thing NYC City Proof Twistable Intense Lip Color are cheap as chips at $3.99 each. Outside of Jordana Twist & Shine Moisturizing Balm Stain you’re not going to get a more budget friendly chubby pencil so I’m loving this price!

This is a balm-y tinted chubby pencil that adds color to lips in a twist up pencil that doesn’t require sharpening. They are scented with a sweet, fruity taste that not everyone will love! I didn’t mind the fragrance or the flavor as it seemed to disappear quite quickly. The single shade I tried was very, very frosty so I hope all the shades don’t run this way because that would be a deal breaker for me. The formula has a smooth, easy glide with a slightly slick feel and a sheen finish. It wears comfortably but isn’t exactly lightweight so it makes itself known on lips. The color had more frost than actual color which disappointed me so that’s why I’d ideally like to try a few more shades before writing these off completely. I like the texture overall, it was just the shade that messed things up for me here.

Update: Ok, so initially the shade I tried reminded me of an eyeshadow. It was just frost overload! I picked up the shade Roosevelt Island Red and I’m happy to report I had a much better experience. I think the formula is considerably thinner than what we are seeing from brands like Revlon, Tarte, and Clinique. It’s a like less balm-y and has a nice slick feel on my drier lips. It’s very light and most comparable to the new NYX Chunky Dunk Hydrating Lippies which could prove a good thing as these are a bit cheaper at $2.99 each versus NYX’s $6 price tag. The color is quite opaque but it has a sheer feel on lips. It wears for around two hours before it shows signs of fading. I wouldn’t call it hydrating through the wear but it isn’t dry and feels virtually weightless on. The color has absolutely no shimmer or sparkle of any kind which was a relief after my initial review! Overall, I’d say these were a fairly nice pencil especially at this price tag. If you aren’t keen on the heavier texture of some of the newer chubby pencil balms you might enjoy this lighter texture!

They seem lighter and less balm-y than Clinique’s version but a bit heavier than other drugstore chubby pencils I’ve personally tried.

Consider this review a little incomplete until I try a few more shades of NYC City Proof Twistable Intense Lip Color! As I said above the texture seems good but the color kinda threw me off slightly here.

Anyone try them?

Do share!

Expect a recap of these soon!

Begone, bedazzled hellion! I’ve got a lovely darker berry-red shade from this line that I love, but I cannot handle the shimmer in this one. Nope.

it looks like eyeshadow right carly?! I really need to try some other shades!

I have one in South Ferry Berry and I think I like it. It’s affordable, the color payoff is pretty good for the price, and the sweet smell is definitely a plus for me.

I have this in the shade Brooklyn Brownstone. It’s a great pinkish-brown, MLBB colour, with a creme finish. The colour is perfect for me, so it’s a shame that I can only use it on “good lip” days. I find the formula gets drying after a few hours.

I bought the shade Brooklyn Brown Stone and I love it! I’m a big fan of the formula, but I’m not too fond of the color selection.

I def have to try another one! this felt more like an eyeshadow than a lip color!

        • Isabella Muse

right?! 😀 I really need to retest these in a color without this much frost and shimmer 😀

  • Melissa Z

Thats a pretty color. I been wondering how good the new nyc chubby lip balms where. I love fruit sents and flavors so might have to try one. Thanks muse

I’m glad I didn’t pick this shade up. Way too frosty. I have five of these, though, none of which have any frost, and I really like them. Riverside Rose is my favorite of the bunch, a pretty pinky-brown.

I def need to retest as this turns me off to the formula slightly heidi so I def need a few sans frost to retest 😀

It might make a good highlighter, though. I have a couple pearly lipsticks I hate to wear on my lips but found they do make good highlighters.

I have Roosevelt Island Red, too. I love that shade. I agree totally with you, Muse, that they don’t feel drying, but not necessarily moisturizing.

          • Isabella Muse

Heidi, yup, not really balmy but thinner and less hydrating than other pencils I tried like this!

  • Brandy Howell

I have Riverside Rose. The shade is a pretty tea rose color that is MLBB; there isn’t any shimmer or sparkle, just a natural sheen that’s pretty on the lips. The only real drawback was that the tapered tip wanted to fall off! Otherwise, for the price, I am really liking the one I got.

    • Isabella Muse

haven’t tried riverside rose but it sounds delightful! ;-D I did’t have an issue with the tip falling off thankfully!!!!!!!!

  • alexis

I’m surprised that no one has commented on the smell. These smell horrible to me – very sweet and chemically.

    • alexis

Ahh…I see your comment now about the smell. I am one of those that you mention may not like it!

  • nakwon

I picked this up and I was disappointed with it feathering and disappearing in 1-2hrs with just talking. No food or water. I guess I kind of wanted it to have a staining effect like the Revlon one. I did love how weightless it was.

  • Clownsharon

Just tried this in Roosevelt Rose. LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!! It intensifies my natural lipcolor. Just what I was looking for

  • Randie

I love this and I got in Canal St Coral and it’s a beautiful not too bright, not too light warm coral shade that is great for my light, warm yellow undertone skin, and I love the scent it’s like sweet candy similar to the Jordana Twist and Shine Balm Stains.
