Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain Review & Swatches

Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain

Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain promise the shine of a gloss, moisture of a balm, long wear of a stain, and the opaque coverage of a lipstick.

Available in 12 shades the new Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain formula is a nod to recently recent releases like Maybelline Color Elixir and L’Oreal Extraordinaire as well as Almay Color + Care Liquid Lip Balm.

Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stains

These are a thicker product that do veer off into the realms of hybrid because they aren’t quite a gloss nor are they are a lipstick but more like a liquid like balm of sorts. They most remind me of Almay’s Liquid Lip Balm but not textured as similarly as Color Elixir or Extraordinaire both of which I find much lighter and less pigmented.

Let’s take a look!

If I’m comparing this formula to anything I’d say Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain is more like a liquid lip balm of sorts. It doesn’t have the velvety texture of a liquid lipstick nor does it have the watery texture of a lip stain and it doesn’t have the shine of a gloss either. The texture is very thick with some creaminess and feels like a melted down lip balm of sorts. It feels quite thick on lips with a hint of a sheen finish but nothing terribly glossy or shiny. The formula has excellent pigment which is where I’d say it was most like a liquid lipstick of sorts. The seven of the twelve shades I tried all had opaque color on a single application and really popped upon two layers (I’m wearing two in my images below). They wear for about three to four hours and I had no issues with them feathering, migrating, or drying out during that wear. They are rather thick so it isn’t exactly a lightweight texture but they aren’t drying and they feel rather like a moisturizing balm of sorts to me. In my experience as they wear away they do not leave a staining effect behind so in that aspect I think they disappoint. Even the darkest shades didn’t really leave behind much of a staining effect behind.

I do think Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain will be an acquired taste. Some folks will likely feel they are too heavy or thick where as others might feel the texture and consistency is quite luxurious and hydrating. I liked them but I didn’t particularly love how heavy they felt on my lips. I did love the fact they are super pigmented though and they did feel very hydrating through the wear. I wish they stained and I do wish they had more shine to them but at least they aren’t sticky or tacky.

Revlon actually has a fairly unique formula on their hands. Currently there’s a huge trend in the drugstore market featuring hybrid lipsticks slash stains/balms/glosses. This formula is all the rage but I do think Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain has a formula all its own and is probably the most pigmented of many you’re see at the moment from brands such as Maybelline and L’Oreal. Although as I mentioned a few times you’ll have to be willing to deal with a heavier formula to enjoy all that pigment.

Revlon Colorstay Moisture Stain are launching at drugstores now.

Nice to know I wasn’t the only one who didn’t get a staining effect with these, even from the brighter/deeper shades. I’m actually a little confused as to why they’re even called stains — they seem much more like a lip lacquer to me. I do like them though. Shanghai Sizzle is so pretty.

    • Isabella Muse

agreed A! It’s misleading a bit! or maybe a cream lipstick of some sort?! I like them too but they are a little misleading!

  • Christine

Was interested in London Posh but you didn’t put a pic of how it looks on the lips “ is it like a zombie lips effect? Will try these out when I see them in stores as I’m curious about them, but would have liked to see how London Posh looked on! 🙂 And [belated] welcome back! Missed your posts 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

very much so haha that’s why I didn’t lip swatch 😀 aw thanks belated reply from me too!!!!!!!

      • Christine

I actually picked up London Posh and Stockholm Chic! I tried London Posh “ was kind of frightening at first but it eventually evened out and looked like a nice nude color on me, not too much zombie lips going on. I did realize that these are a bit balm-phobic, and apply much better without balm underneath (an old habit of mine haha). Stockholm Chic is a good color, but I don’t think I like these enough to pick up more. Thanks!

        • Isabella Muse

thank god you got lucky! I couldn’t pull it off 😀 I’m glad you’re liking them! They do indeed have that balmy texture going on so it’s prob a relief you don’t have to apply prior 🙂

  • Elena

OoOoOoOoO. Please tell me you got these at Harmon’s!

I’ve been dying to get my hands on these. I’m in love with the Color Elixir’s and the Extraordinaire’s.

    I’m loving this trend!

    • Isabella Muse

I did indeed elena sorry delayed reply hopefully you found them by now!

  • Rebecca

Are these similar at all to the L’Oreal Glossy Lip Stains? (Aqua Laquer-whatever it’s called) I love those and was hoping for a similar product. PS: The first three berry-ish shades look very pretty on you!

    • Isabella Muse

not really rebecca the texture is considerably different and way more pigmented 🙂 aw thank YOU! you’re too kind!

  • Rachel

Thank you! I’m so excited, but, are they minty? That’s a deal breaker for me.

    • Isabella Muse

my pleasure Rachel! No…it’s a little subtle perfume-y but it’s really nothing obvious imho!

  • Lauren

I picked up India Intrigue today. I liked the initial color, but for some reason, it darkened into a more vampy purple color after a few minutes and became slightly uneven. I was very disappointed, especially after I wiped it off and it didn’t leave any stain behind whatsoever. I was happy I only picked up one to try.

    • Isabella Muse

interesting Lauren! Didn’t have that issue myself with the color changing. I do agree though the lack of staining was a sore disappointment!

  • Adrienne

Welcome Back Muse! Great review. Just wondering if it was just me but did the product feel “cold” when you applied it to your lips? I tried two and it just gave me a weird kind of cold feeling during application. The Stockholm left a pretty good stain after the glossiness wore off, I didn’t get much deposit or stain with the Barcelona color.

    • Isabella Muse

thanks dear! ummm well now that you mention it yes…they are kinda cooling! It’s not weird though to me! I didn’t get much of a stain on any unfortunately. They did look great on but I wish they stained and had more glossiness :-/

  • Heidi

I’ve tried New York Scene and Milan Moment. I really like both. They do feel moisturizing and have decent staying power. Seeing your swatches, I might want to pick up a couple more.

    • Isabella Muse

they are pretty cool aren’t they Heidi? I just wish they stained!!! darn!

  • Marty Pauline

I picked up New York Scene myself and I like how it looks berry red on you, on me it became darker on the edges and emphasized lines. I am not too hot on the ombre lip look so I will not be trying anymore shades. I liked the Rimmel Apocalips better.

    • Isabella Muse

aw sorry to hear it marty! Thankfully it didn’t creep around my lip line!

  • Jazmyne

I was just going to ask if you tried these and what you thought so glad you reviewed it , i love miami fever on you total summer color at the beach or just laying by the pool with sunglasses

    • Isabella Muse

aw thanks chica 😀 I really liked Miami fever too great shade 😀

  • kellly

they definitely look pretty but I sure wish they had better staining power! I may end up with a couple, tho. Somehow these things find a way of sneaking into my life no matter how hard I try to resist them!

    • Isabella Muse

lol I hear that! makeup sneaks into my life all the time!

    • Isabella Muse

I LOVE that shade 😀 me too! I’m so about red lately and typically avoid it!

  • Hima

Welcome back Muse! All the colors look great on you. 😀
I’m very intrigued by New York Scene, Miami Fever, and Stockholm Chic.

    • Isabella Muse

good to be back dear 🙂 thanks! awww you’r too kind! You def should try they are quite nice!

  • morgane

i picked up barcelona nights and i was in love with the color but to me it had this funky perfumed smell and taste. had to go back 🙁 which was a bummer because i was SOOOO excited about these.

    • Isabella Muse

i didn’t notice that at all morgane…wow..! Sorry my dear!

  • SusanT

Glad to see you back, Muse! I have New York Scene and Milan Moment. New York Scene is a fabulous red and I really love the formula. Milan Moment, the color is so-so, rather disappointed in it. But I am definitely going to snag more of these; I am loving these hybrid products, the Revlon and Maybelline ones.

    • Isabella Muse

thanks susan good to be home! I liked New York Scene too 😀 It’s a great red! 😀 I was considering a few more as well just waiting on a bogo 😀

  • Guindyloo

Oooooh I think I need India Intrigue, Miami Fever and New York Scene! I don’t mind a heavier feeling so long as it’s not sticky….and tbh there’s not a lot that turns me off from anything that’s a gorgeous colour!

  • Monica

Naughty Muse! I bought 2 of these when they we’re buy 1, get 1 50% off at my local drugstore. For me, I get a good lip stain after it wears off, not as much as Etude House Cherry Tint, but defo pretty good. I bought Miami Fever & one other color. I wanted Miami to be more orange-y but it goes red on me.

    • Isabella Muse

i had the same issue monica, lovely formula but no staining when they wore off but still nice 😀

  • Jessicaj

Loving Miami and New York on you (and might have to purchase for myself!!!)

they really make your beautiful pale skin and dark hair combo stand out.

    xx

  • Melissa

I wish I had seen this before purchasing the London Posh! 🙁 In the tube I thought it was very pretty, but on, not so much LOL It was way too light on and made me look very blah. I guess I need something with more color but I always gravitate towards pinky shades and wanted to be adventurous. Oh well, this one will go back and I will prob pick up a pinky one 🙂

    • Isabella Muse

don’t feel bad london posh totally made me look like zombie girl! I was hoping for a nude pink but it just looked scary!

  • natasha

I bought two colors, i wasn’t thrilled about the texture. I ended up tossing them. I do however like the Maybelline Color Elixer.

    Natasha

  • Allie

I use, “London Posh” to finish off my base colors, “Miami Fever” or “Shanghai Sizzle” First apply base color and use pinky finger to smooth, let set a few moments, apply, “London Posh” and smooth. Application requires a little time and patience, but you will have a lovely finished, dewy look.

  • Jac

I just bought India Intrigue. It’s totally bleeding to the edges of my lips 🙁 I don’t wear foundation so I can’t line them. Just looking for a teansie bit of color/tint, nothing obvious and nothing that would get on my bf – he’s not a fan of lipstick. Any suggestions??
    Thank you!!
