Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon Review & Swatches

Burt's Bees Lip Crayon

Burt’s Bees fans rejoice we have a chubby lip pencil from the brand! The New Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon is a chubby twist up pencil available in six shades that are launching at drugstores for Summer 2014.

Take a look!

The Burt’s Bees Lip Crayon promises a creamy, full coverage matte finish formula. I tried two shades that I purchased for $8.99 each at Walgreens (with a $1.50 off each thanks to a coupon on the display).

Honestly, if you want matte and creamy I’d go with Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm at around the same price because Burt’s Bees Lip Crayons disappointed me. I read a few posts about these on forums and other blogs and it was a lot of raving so I did question myself several times about not liking them but in the end I’m actually returning them….! I have other chubby pencils that I like considerably more with a formula that’s way nicer. These, unfortunately, just didn’t do it for me because I’m darn dry lips!

On a more positive note they do have a lot going for them!

First off they have excellent pigmentation. I tried two shades and both offered fully opaque color built on two layers. They have absolutely no taste of flavor and are apparently 100% natural. They also wear for a very long time. I can get four hours at least from these but I did notice that the darker color I tried, Napa Vineyard, was a creeper so it liked to migrate around my upper lip line, nothing a little lipliner won’t prevent though! It’s a gorgeous bright warmer red though which excellent pigmentation! The second shade I tried was Niagara Overlook which was nice MLBB (my lips but better pink).

I didn’t like them because they kinda tug during application and they feel quite dry on my lips! Almost immediately after application my lips feel like cardboard. If you have drier lips they aren’t going to be your best friend. You can aid the application by applying lip balm prior and gloss after for more shine.

Burt’s Bee’s Lip Crayons are likely going to be a hit or a miss with users. I see them as being a miss for those that have drier lips as they do tug during application and accentuate drier areas. However, they do have excellent pigment and a longer wear. For me it was a miss but I’m curious to see who they might be a hit with and why!

Do share if you tried them!

I purchased this item.

I wish you had reviewed these a couple of days ago! I just bought one in Rosewood yesterday, and I had the same impression – I like the color and pigmentation, but it is super dry, much drier than any other lip crayon I have tried, and certainly not what I was expecting from Burt’s Bees.

I’m so relieved to hear you say the leslie! I read so many nice raves about the pencil on other blogs as well as on reddit makeup addiction and other forums. And everyone is having such wonderful experiences with them! Don’t get me wrong, the pigment and wear is ridiculously good but the texture is dry 🙁 everyone was saying how comfortable they wear but I can’t really agree! happy I’m not alone!

I feel like Napa Vineyard & the Redwood one tugs, but I like the matte on it because it’s not super drying like MAC’s Retro Matte formula, but I found that Hawaiian Smolder did not go matte on the lips and glided on nicely, which was one of the only ones that did that from the line.

    • Isabella Muse

Hmm gotta try that shade Lisa maybe I’ll be happier with it 😀

Could you maybe take some pictures with just your lips (or perhaps a closer, tighter, straight-on shot of your face)? I find it’s really hard to get a good look at the actual lip colour because I can’t see half your mouth.

(I’m sorry – I don’t mean to sound rude or snippy!)

I don’t really do close up shots well egg-plant sorry! I’m really not so great with a camera, as you can probably see from my mascara shots. Apologies the photos aren’t any good on this review :-/

Yuck! It’s too bad because some of their other lip products are awesome. I easily dry out from lip products, so I will skip these!

  • Lindsay

I love the packaging but I don’t have a good history with Burt’s Bees so I’m glad I wasn’t tempted to pick these up. I want to like the brand but they just don’t make anything I love!

I love nudes, so I picked up Sedona Sands at Walgreen’s this morning, $8.99 plus the same $1.50 coupon, and I loooove it! Great matte, great color, slightly silky feel. I love that it doesn’t have a flavor or scent, and doesn’t add a stain (Wet ‘n Wild’s chubby pencil winds up looking like the old fuchsia mood lipstick on me – and what’s with the tingle???). It’s not dry (ELF’s chubby stick is the driest) and it feels and looks GREAT!

yay happy to you like Laura 🙂 you had better luck than I did! enjoy!

  • Auty123

Yes they are dry! But like you I like the high pigment and that they “natural”. I put on Buxom or Moxie after applying the Burt’s Lip Crayon to give me the moisture I crave

  • Rainie

Man, you sure love lip products. Every single time I search for lip products swatches on google, I would always find your face and your swatches in the search.

I also wish I had read the review before buying, because your review is absolutely spot on. I’m a big fan of the crayons from other companies (I have Neutrogena and Revlon and like both), and have worn Lip Shimmers since forever, so I was excited to see these. Yes, they’re pigmented, but too matte (I don’t like super glossy but do like creamy) and way too dry. This will be returned.

Mine felt a little dry too (waxy-dry). I layered it with a BB tinted lip balm, and that felt much better. The combo I tried was Niagara Overlook win Red Dahlia on top.

K, so gave it a go, no go! Tried Hawaiian Smoulder. It felt as if I was coloring my lips with an actual wax crayon. It took several tries of going back and forth on my lips to distribute any color. There was no silky feel or pleasant scent; a disappointment.

Hi, wished I had corrected my grammar and spelling before I sent the previous comment. Still, sticking to my previous opinion. Thank you for letting me comment. ♡
