L’Oreal Glossy Balm Crayon Review & Swatches

L'Oreal Glossy Balm Crayon

L’Oreal Glossy Balm Crayon are a new, permanent 12 shade range of chubby lip pencils available for Fall 2014 at drugstores. L’Oreal describes the new Glossy Balm Crayon formula as a high dose of pigmented shine that conditions and keeps lips smooth for hours on end.

I have to admit the L’Oreal Glossy Balm Crayon packs in the pigment and they do not dry out lips but…

Where’s all that glossy, shine they speak of!?

So L’Oreal Glossy Balm Crayon are obviously a chubby no need for a sharpener twist up pencil. Easy to store, easy to travel with for touch ups, and just twist it up no sharpener required. They are fragrance and flavor free for those sensitive users out there.

The formula is a bit lighter compared to Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm and aren’t a balmy texture like Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Color Balm. I find the texture is that of a lightweight lipstick with a certain creaminess that resembles the Color Whisper formula but with less of the slick hydrating feel you get from the Color Whisper Lipstick line. They are as pigmented as a lipstick as they provide fairly opaque color on a single application and out of the six shades I purchased only one was a bit on the sheer side (Ginger Candy). They have a creamy glide on lips without tugging and they wear for around four to five hours on my drier lips with a smooth, even finish as color doesn’t cling or accentuate flakier areas on my lips.

Now…I have to admit the disappointing aspect would stem from the lack of shine. Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought they felt more like a lighter satin finish versus a glossy, shiny one. I watched a few youTube reviews where gurus mentioned they were so shiny and so glossy and I thought perhaps we tried completely different products. I didn’t even experience a sheen from the colors! That did sadden me slightly but the good news is the lack of glossiness means they aren’t fading right away and have a stronger wear.

One of the other things I loved about the L’Oreal Glossy Balm Crayon Collection was the shades! Almost all the shades are so wearable! And there are some fabulous MLBB (my lips but better) colors in the collection that will become staples for some I’m sure. The other thing I noticed is the lack the drying factor many of these chubby pencils have. They aren’t terribly hydrating but they keep lips nice and soft through the wear without drying them out!

Overall, you can add L’Oreal Glossy Balm Crayons to the pile of “fairly awesome chubby lip pencils”! I really liked these. Sure the lack of glossiness disappointed but I enjoyed the light, creamy texture and gorgeous pigmented color they had! Definitely a great addition to the Chubby Lip Pencil world!

L’Oreal Glossy Balm Crayons are available now at drugstores or grab them at drugstore.com.

I purchased this item.

I love these! One thing I always appreciate is when the packaging is actually the color of the product b/c when it’s sealed it’s hard to tell exactly what it will look like. These did the color matching well.

On an unrelated note, I just got back from CVS (I live in Ohio) and they had a big MUA Makeup Academy display with a bunch of lip products, eyelashes, and brushes. I can’t find anything in a Google search that says they’re coming to the states, so I wonder if it’s just a temporary display?

    • Isabella Muse

wait what!? MUA in CVS?! AWESOME! did you take piccies by chance!?

      • Megan

I didn’t snap a pic of the display, but I’m going back there after work b/c I got some CVS bucks yesterday, so I’m getting more stuff. No eyeshadows or liners or anything, which is what I’ve always heard was the best. I’ll send a pic of what I picked up yesterday.

          • Megan

I sent them on Instagram, I hope that works!

          • Adrienne

I am also in Northeast Ohio and saw a smaller MUA display at 1 local CVS but it was only cosmetics brushes no makeup.

          • Annie S.

I saw that display also (I’m in New York) but only saw the brushes. I wondered if they were really connected to the MUA company.

I’m kind of over the chubby pencil craze but these do look pretty pigmented. I really like Innocent Coral!

    • Isabella Muse

hey gwen sorry delayed reply. I didn’t see the tag!? send me a link i’d love to see him 🙂 congrats!!!!!!!!

  • Erica

Do these have the L’Oreal lipstick smell/taste? I’m loving the looks of these, but if they have the typical smell of a L’Oreal lipstick they will be a skip for me.

    • Isabella Muse

hi erica mentioned in the review about fagrance/flavor hope this helps!

  • Heidi

I’ve been wanting these. Your swatches are helping me narrow down what I want. (Practically all!) Now, to find a good sale of find these at Bed Bath & Beyond with a coupon!

    • Isabella Muse

don’t quote me heidi but if you signed up at bed, bath, and beyond they have 20% off printable coupon! 😀 I’m glad the swatches helped 😀 they are also cheaper at BBB than anywhere else as walgreens/cvs has them but at $8.99 each versus $6.79 at BBB!

I have the Mocha one and do like it. I find it goes on glossy, but that fades very quickly. Have to reapply quite a bit.

    • Isabella Muse

I think you’re right, I get a little bit glossiness with the mocha (none of the others) but it fades almost RIGHT away!

      • Kathryn

I bought three of these, lovely mocha, vintage rose, and baby doll. I returned all but lovely mocha. I was so disappointed with the pigmentation of the other two and there was no gloss for a product named “glossy balm.” I wanted these to be like the Loreal Extraodinaires in a crayon balm format. They only last maybe 2 hours on my lips and I really didn’t like the plasticy smell.

  • Charlotte

Hi, Really disappointed that we don’t get these here in the UK. We have the Glam Shine Balmy Gloss instead (which has been out a while I think) and the colours are terrible … mostly bright pink / fuschia tyoe of shades and no real neutral / nude / MLBB shades.
I doubt these will launch here as they already have those. 🙁

  • Gwen O’Brien

    Hi love,
I tagged you in a photo on Instagram. I want you to see my new grandson.
    Best,
    Gwen

hey gwen sorry delayed reply. I didn’t see the tag!? send me a link i’d love to see him 🙂 congrats grandma 😀

  • Chelsea

The not-super-glossiness would be a plus for me! These look lovely, especially since you said they are fragrance/flavor free. L’Oreal (and Lancome, for that matter) have the worst lippie fragrance/flavor.

  • Maggie

Fragrance AND Flavor FREE! I’m snapping up ALL of these! I didn’t see these at Ulta last week when they had their sale though. Too bad I guess.

  • kimmyyy

Oh my gosh, it’s a freakin’ miracle, some chubby lip pencils in normal colors that aren’t minty! Vintage Rose is so pretty! 🙂

  • lola

why do your photos always look the same? same position, same lighting, same headbands… not trying to be mean, but really it’s tough to see a difference in makeup when every pic looks the same.

    • Isabella Muse

sorry lola, I’m not really a pro at taking photos and typically I do quickie shots in my bathroom prior to heading to work in the morning. I try to be consistent with the photos, not really much for posing differently in every single shot, this isn’t a photo shot after all 🙂 so I keep it basically the same for each picture to be as consistent.

      • Nicole

I think it’s helpful that you keep the same lighting etc., because that way you can tell the subtle differences in shades or textures of the different products by comparing the pictures. It’s like having side by side pictures and swatches of all your reviews.

        • Isabella Muse

thanks nicole I’m glad you feel the way!!!!!!!!!!! I’m def the most photogenic person in the world 🙂 and by no means a pro at taking photos but try to keep them as clear and true to color as possible! 🙂

  • Karena

Hi Muse – I know what you mean about, “Where’s the glossiness?” LOL I stopped in a Walgreens on my way to work in S.F. this morning, because I had seen a temporary display out last week and I was thinking about them all weekend. They only had two colors left today which had been moved to the regular display section. The Walgreens employee told me that someone walked in and stole the entire temporary display and they only had a couple left – Pink Me Up and Coral. I really love the texture and these are long-wearingish. I love that Pink Me Up is a fuschia/magenta that is actually pretty wearable. By the way, I appreciate that you do similar poses, because that way, we really focus on the make-up! You are awesome!! Thanks for the helpful swatches and review. I think I’ll have to pick up Vintage Rose for sure!!

    • Isabella Muse

jesus stole the entire display?! wtf!? that’s cra haha! Yeah, weird name for them right!? I just don’t see the glossy factor here but I def love the wear and the colors are lovely! They might just be my chubby pencils at the moment 🙂 def def grab vintage rose, it’s a fab shade 🙂 awww you’re very welcome and I’m glad you feel that way! Lord knows I’m no model 🙂 plus I feel rather awkward doing a variety of different poses (this isn’t a photo shoot haha) for the same exact product so I just keep it consistent and call it a day 😀

    • Isabella Muse

gwen are you tagging “musingsofamuse”because that isn’t my screen name on instagram 🙂 I’m not getting your tags hun!

  • rubylee

I love this glossy balm!!! I bought the my baby doll color and I love just how beautiful it looks!!I have no complaints about this.
